A studio body has to satisfy two requirements that pull against each other. It has to be light tight, which means every seam, fastener line and penetration is sealed against something far smaller than a drop of water. And it has to be rigid, because a cyclorama cove is a piece of rigid plaster or MDF bonded to a wall and it cannot follow a panel that flexes.

Neither requirement is a problem when a builder gets it right. What we usually see is a unit where one requirement was solved and the other was assumed. A superbly light tight body that racks will crack its cove. A very stiff body with a hasty blackout job will leak light through a fastener line, and a light leak in a portrait background is not something retouching fixes cheaply.

Two requirements that fight each other

Light tight and rigid are both achievable and they push a builder in opposite directions. Light tightness rewards a body assembled with continuous seals, thick linings and as few penetrations as possible. Rigidity rewards structure, and structure means fasteners, joints and members, each of which is a potential path for a thin line of daylight.

The builds that work well solved both deliberately. The builds we see most solved one and hoped about the other, which is why a studio arriving here usually has either a cracked cove or a light leak, and occasionally both. Diagnosing which problem you actually have decides the whole shape of the repair.

The cyclorama cove and its bond line

A cove exists to present a curve with no visible transition, which means it has to be rigid. It is bonded to a wall panel that is fastened at its edges and free in the middle, and that panel dishes very slightly whenever the unit is towed. The bond line is the stiffest part of the assembly, so that is where the strain concentrates.

The crack therefore follows the curve rather than crossing it, which is the quickest way to tell a fatigue crack from an impact crack. Filling and refinishing a fatigue crack without stiffening the panel behind it gives you the same line back within a season. We stiffen first, then rebuild the cove surface, then refinish.

Note

A crack that follows the cove curve is telling you the panel behind it moves. A crack that cuts across the curve is telling you something hit it.

Ceiling grids hung from roof bows

A pipe grid is the most useful thing in a studio vehicle and the least anticipated by whoever built the body. Three hundred pounds of strobes, modifiers and booms hangs from a handful of hanger points fastened into roof bows that were sized to hold a roof panel up, not to span between sidewalls as loaded beams.

Each hanger point deflects the bow a little, the grid stops being level, and the roof panel above develops a waviness that is visible in a raking light. We add a hanger rail spanning between the sidewall posts, transfer the grid loads onto it and leave the bows carrying only the roof, which is the job they were given originally.

Light leaks after a body repair

This is the acceptance test unique to a studio. A repair that passes a water test can still fail a light test, because water needs a path with volume and light only needs a line. A fastener that seals against rain can pass light around its head, and a lap joint sealed on the outside can transmit a thin bright line along its length.

So we test differently. The unit gets closed up in a bright bay and inspected from inside after five minutes of dark adaptation, which finds leaks a torch survey never will. Anything found gets sealed from the inside face as well as the outside, and the test is repeated before the unit is called finished.

Cooling a sealed dark box in Southern California

A blacked out body absorbs heat rather than reflecting it, and then you put people, modelling lamps and strobe packs inside and close the door. The rooftop unit runs close to continuously through an afternoon shoot, which works its curb flange, and the ceiling below is a sealed finished surface with no space above it to inspect from.

So the first symptom is a stain appearing on the very wall clients are photographed against. We reseal the curb properly, but we also look at whether the cooling capacity matches the load, because a unit cycling continuously is both the cause of the flange movement and a sign the build is short on capacity.

Rear door seals and a dropped hinge line

The rear doors are the loading route for backdrops, stands, cases and everything else, so they get opened and shut constantly and often with a knee or an elbow. Studio builds add a second compression seal to make them light tight, and a compression seal only works while the door still sits centrally in its aperture.

A few millimetres of hinge wear puts a line of daylight down one edge, and no amount of extra seal fixes a door that is no longer centred. We replace the hinge components, shim the door back to the aperture, and only then fit new seal so the compression is even along all four edges.

In shop refinishing and what it costs

We do not offer mobile repair and there is no roadside option, and on a studio that restriction is doing real work. A coved surface refinished outdoors picks up dust that shows under a strobe, and a dark adaptation light test needs a controlled bay. Photographers reach the Yorba Linda building from Rancho Santa Margarita on the 241 to the 91.

Cove, panel, grid and refinish hours bill at $210 with paint supplies at $55 per paint hour. Shore power and strobe circuit work bills at $260. What typically goes wrong on this vehicle

Cracking along the bond line where the cyclorama cove meets the wall

A cove is rigid by definition, because its whole purpose is to present a curve with no visible line in it. It is bonded to a wall panel that is fastened at its edges and free in the middle, which dishes slightly as the unit is towed. The stiffest part of that assembly is the bond line, so that is where the crack appears, and it always follows the curve.

A pipe grid carrying three hundred pounds of strobes, modifiers and booms hangs from a handful of points fastened into roof bows. Those bows were sized to hold a roof panel up, not to act as beams carrying point loads between the sidewalls. Over time the bow deflects at each hanger, the grid stops being level, and the roof panel develops a visible waviness.

Every body repair on a studio has a second acceptance test that nobody else in this family has to pass. A seam that is watertight can still pass a thin line of daylight, and a fastener that seals against rain can let light past its head. On a portrait background a two millimetre leak reads as a visible streak in every frame shot against that wall.

A blacked out body with strobes and people in it heats up quickly in Southern California, so the rooftop unit runs hard. Its curb flange works with the roof, and the blackout ceiling below is a sealed finished surface with no attic space, so nobody inspects the underside of that roof until a stain appears on a wall the client is photographed against.

Shop fit

Will it fit in the shop?

Studio bodies are undemanding for size and unusually demanding for cleanliness. A 26 foot box or trailer takes a standard bay and paints whole in the booth. What we plan around is dust: a coved surface refinished in a dirty bay shows every particle under a strobe, so cove work is staged after any grinding is finished and the interior gets a detail level clean before refinishing. Grid, backdrops, stands and all camera and lighting equipment leave with the owner.

Claim

Insurance considerations for this vehicle

  • Lighting, camera bodies and computers are contents and they are the expensive part of a studio build. A commercial auto policy will not reach them, so keep a scheduled inventory with serial numbers separate from the vehicle paperwork.
  • A cracked cove that developed over two towing seasons is wear. A cove cracked by an identifiable impact is part of that loss, and the difference is usually visible in whether the crack follows the bond line or crosses it.
  • Ask specifically whether the cove and blackout fit out is covered as part of the vehicle. It is a bonded structure rather than removable equipment, which puts it in an awkward gap on many commercial policies.

Appendix: questions and answers

Why has the curve of my cyclorama cracked along one line?
Because the panel behind it dishes slightly while the unit is towed and the cove is rigid by design. The bond line is the stiffest part of the assembly, so strain concentrates there and the crack follows the curve. Filling it without stiffening the panel returns the same line within a season.
Can a lighting grid be hung from a box body roof safely?
Yes, but not from the roof bows themselves. Bows are sized to hold a roof panel up, and three hundred pounds of strobes on a few hanger points turns them into deflecting beams. We fit a hanger rail spanning between the sidewall posts and carry the grid on that, leaving the bows with only the roof.
We had a panel repaired and now the studio leaks light. Why?
Because water tightness and light tightness are different standards. Water needs a path with volume and light only needs a line, so a sealed lap joint or a fastener head can pass daylight while shedding rain. We close the unit up in a bright bay, dark adapt for five minutes inside, and seal from both faces.
How much cooling does a blacked out studio body actually need?
More than the same body in white. A dark exterior absorbs heat, and then modelling lamps, strobe packs and people go inside with the doors shut. If the rooftop unit never cycles off during an afternoon shoot, the build is short on capacity, and that continuous running is also what works the curb flange loose.
The rear doors no longer keep daylight out. What is failing?
The hinges rather than the seal. A compression seal only works while the door sits centrally in its aperture, and a few millimetres of hinge wear puts a bright line down one edge. We replace the hinge components, shim the door back to the aperture and then fit new seal so compression is even all round.
Does the cove come out to repair the wall behind it?
Sometimes, and we try hard to avoid it because rebuilding a cove is the expensive part. Where the panel can be stiffened from the far side or from above, the cove stays. Where the panel itself has to be replaced, the cove comes off in sections and gets rebuilt onto the new panel and refinished.
