What does teardrop trailer repair involve?

A teardrop has no framed walls in the RV sense. The sidewalls are structural panels cut to a profile, spars run between them to create the roof curve, and a skin is bent over those spars and fastened at the edges. It is closer to boat building than to trailer building, and it is repaired that way.
The defining feature is the rear galley hatch, which is the entire back of the trailer hinged at the top. It has to seal along a compound curve, which is a fundamentally harder problem than sealing a flat door, and it is where almost every teardrop leak lives.
The shell is the structure
There are no studs and no laminated sidewall panels in the RV sense. The sidewalls are structural sheets cut to the teardrop profile, spars run between them at intervals to establish the roof curve, and a skin is bent over those spars and captured along both sidewall edges. Everything carries load, which is why a teardrop this light can be this rigid.
It also means damage is never local. A dent in a skin panel between spars is a skin problem. A soft spot at a spar is a structural problem, because the spar is what holds the profile. So the first question on any teardrop is which of those two you are looking at, and it is answered by probing at the spars rather than in the middle of a panel.

Sealing a hatch against a compound curve
A door on any other trailer seals against a flat plane. A galley hatch seals against a curve that runs from the top of the roof down both sides to the floor, changing direction continuously, and it is held closed by latches at the bottom only. Compression along that path has to be even, and there is very little in the design forcing it to be.
The result is that hatch leaks are nearly always one sided. Twist in the hatch, or a body that has racked slightly, means one side of the curve compresses the seal and the other does not. Fitting a new gasket without correcting the geometry produces a trailer that leaks in exactly the same place.

Water always ends up at a spar
Inside a curved roof there are no flat surfaces except the spars. So any water that gets past the hatch seal or a roof edge trim runs along the inside of the skin and stops at the next spar down, where it sits. On a plywood built teardrop that is exactly the wrong place for it.
The damage is invisible for a long time. The spar and the sidewall around it delaminate, the skin loses its support, and the first visible sign is a slight flat spot or dent appearing in a roof that used to be a smooth curve. By then the repair involves reconstructing a spar, which is joinery rather than patching.
Before you proceed
A flat spot appearing in a teardrop roof curve is usually a failed spar underneath it. The skin is reporting a loss of support rather than an impact.
Two fastener lines that follow the profile
A teardrop has two long fastener lines that matter. The skin edge trim runs the whole profile along both sidewalls, and the hatch hinge runs full width across the top of the curve. Both are exposed, both pass through panel edges, and both rely on being sealed rather than being sheltered.
The hinge is the harsher of the two, because it carries the entire hatch weight along one line at the highest and most rain exposed point on the trailer. Water sits in the hinge, fasteners corrode, and eventually one section carries more hatch than it was meant to. When we replace one we establish a new fastener path into sound material rather than reusing corroded holes.
A torsion axle gives you nothing to inspect
There are no leaf springs, no shackles and no equalizer on a teardrop. A torsion axle uses rubber cords inside a square tube, which is compact and rides well and offers absolutely nothing to service. The rubber compresses permanently over the years, particularly on a trailer that has been stored loaded.
So the trailer sits progressively lower with no visible cause and no adjustment available. Measuring ride height against the axle specification is the only way to know, and once the rubber has taken a set the axle is replaced rather than repaired. It is worth checking before a long trip rather than discovering it as a fender contacting a tire.
Rates and who owns teardrops
Shell, spar, skin and structural work bills at $210 per hour with body supplies at $5 per body hour and paint supplies at $55 per paint hour. Seals, hardware and electrical work is $260 per hour. A written estimate is $150, credited in full against an authorized repair.
Owners divide into two groups: buyers of production teardrops who want a small trailer any vehicle can tow, and builders or restorers of wooden teardrops who care about the shell as an object. The second group frequently wants us to do the structural work and keep the finishing for themselves, which we are glad to accommodate.

The hatch seals against a compound curve running from the roof line down both sides to the floor. A compression seal on a curve has to compress evenly along a path that changes direction continuously, and the hatch is held by latches at the bottom only. Any twist in the hatch or the body means one side compresses and the other does not.

Will it fit in the shop?
A teardrop is the smallest thing we take in and it is worked more like a piece of joinery than a vehicle. It sits on a bench height stand rather than on the floor for hatch and skin work, which lets us reach the curve from both sides without a ladder, and it goes on a standard lift for frame, floor and torsion axle work. Because these are small we can hold one for a longer restoration without occupying a bay a coach needs.
Insurance considerations for this vehicle
- Many teardrops are owner built or built by very small shops, so there is no build sheet and no comparable for a valuation. An agreed value policy with photographs and receipts is the only sensible arrangement on a well built teardrop.
- Water damage traced to a hatch seal is wear and is excluded. Because a teardrop is small, that damage frequently reaches structure quickly, so the useful spend is on hatch geometry rather than on an appeal.
- Confirm that the trailer is insured at all. Teardrops under a certain weight are sometimes assumed to be covered by an auto policy, and they generally are not once you are talking about the trailer itself rather than liability.
Appendix: questions and answers
- Why does my teardrop hatch seal on one side and not the other?
- Because the seal follows a compound curve and the hatch is latched at the bottom only. Any twist in the hatch, or a body that has racked slightly, means one side of that curve compresses the gasket and the other does not. Geometry has to be corrected before a new seal will help.
- A flat spot has appeared in my teardrop roof curve. What is that?
- Almost certainly a failed spar underneath. Spars are the only flat surfaces inside a curved roof, so water that gets past a seal collects on them and delaminates the spar and the sidewall around it. The skin loses support and the curve flattens. The repair reconstructs the spar rather than patching the skin.
- Should the hatch hinge on a teardrop be replaced or repaired?
- It depends on the fastener path, not the hinge. That full width hinge carries the whole hatch along one line at the highest, most rain exposed point on the trailer, so water sits in it and the fasteners corrode. Reusing corroded holes fails again. We establish a new fastener path into sound material.
- My teardrop sits lower than it used to and nothing looks broken. Why?
- The torsion axle rubber has taken a set. There are no springs, shackles or equalizer to inspect, just rubber cords inside a square tube that compress permanently over years, faster on a trailer stored loaded. There is nothing to adjust, so measuring ride height against specification is the only diagnosis.
- Is a dent in my teardrop skin a serious repair?
- Depends where it is. Between spars it is a skin repair. At a spar it is structural, because the spar holds the roof profile and everything on a teardrop carries load. That is why we probe at the spars rather than in the middle of a panel before deciding what the job actually is.
