How much of a vehicle has to be painted to make a repair invisible?
Paint and refinishing decisions turn on blend area rather than colour. Owners call about paint expecting the conversation to be about colour. It almost never is. What decides the price and the schedule is how much surface has to be sprayed for the repair to become invisible, and that is a function of the finish system on your unit rather than of the size of the damage. A solid white panel can be repaired and blended in an afternoon. The same repair on a three stage pearl can need two adjacent panels and a full day of test spraying first.

Blend area is the number that decides your invoice
Refinish pricing confuses people because it does not scale with damage. Two units arrive with an identical repaired panel. One is a solid white trailer and the refinish is four hours. The other is a diesel pusher in a three stage pearl, and making that same panel disappear means colour across it, colour carried into the panel ahead and behind, and clear over all three. Twenty hours, same repair.
The reason is how the eye reads a finish. A solid colour either matches or it does not, and a good match is invisible at a hard edge. A metallic or pearl changes appearance with viewing angle because of how the flake lies down, and no two spray passes lay flake identically. So the transition has to be spread across enough surface that there is never a line for your eye to catch, and that spread is the cost.

Making a single repair disappear
This is the highest volume work in the booth and the one where the difference between shops is most visible. A panel comes out of body repair in primer, and the job is to put colour on it that nobody will ever notice. It is decided in preparation and in the spray out loop rather than at the gun. Colour gets read off a cleaned area of the unit, mixed, sprayed on a card, cured and carried outside next to the coach. Only when the card and the panel agree in daylight does the unit get masked.
When the finish itself has run out of life
Clear coat peeling along the roof line, crazing across the upper sides, a colour that has gone flat and will no longer respond to polishing: at that point the film has failed and no amount of correction brings it back, because there is nothing left to cut. A full repaint means every fixture, light, marker, rub rail and graphic comes off, the entire surface is prepared, and the coach holds the booth for weeks rather than days. It is the largest job this department does and it is scheduled like a project.
When nobody knows what colour your unit is
RV manufacturers buy paint in batches and change suppliers, and a data plate code frequently describes a formula that has not been mixed in a decade. Add fifteen years of ultraviolet exposure and the coach in front of you is not the colour it left the factory as anyway. So the colour gets read from the vehicle: a clean area, multiple angles, several points along the unit to catch how it has faded differently on the sun side, then mixing, spraying and comparing until the card disappears against the panel.
Graphics, swooshes and fleet identity
Two very different jobs share this page. One is reproducing factory graphics on a repaired coach, where a swoosh runs across a panel that has been replaced and both sides have to agree. The other is commercial: a fleet applying livery, a food truck getting a new identity, a rental company standardising a mixed fleet. Both are dominated by layout and masking rather than by spraying, and both start with photographs and measurements taken before a single decal is peeled.
Correcting a film that has already been sprayed
Sometimes the paint is on and the problem is texture rather than colour: orange peel that does not match the panel next to it, dust nibs from a poorly filtered bay, sanding marks telegraphing through, or a repair somebody else finished in a hurry. That is a correction job rather than a refinish, done by cutting and polishing a cured film. It has a hard limit. There is only so much clear on a panel, and correction that goes through it turns a polishing job into a respray.
How booth time is scheduled around a 45 foot coach
The booth is 60 feet of clear length with a 16 foot door and heated cure, which means a 45 foot coach goes in as one unit rather than being painted in halves. That capability is also the scheduling constraint. While a coach is in there for a full repaint, no other unit can use it, so full repaints are booked into dedicated windows and everything else runs around them.
Preparation happens on a separate prep deck for exactly this reason. Sanding, masking and priming never share air with a wet panel, and the booth is occupied only for the passes that actually need it. On a full repaint that split is the difference between a nine week booth block and a four week one, which is why we hold the two spaces apart even though it costs floor area in a building that never has enough.
Note
Ask any shop where they sand. If preparation happens in the same space as spraying, you will find the evidence in your clear coat under a raking light.
What refinish work costs and where the materials go
Refinishing bills from the body and paint department at $210 per hour. Paint supplies add $55 per paint hour, which is the largest material line on any job in this department and reflects what modern waterborne basecoat, sealer, clear and activator actually cost. Parts carry standard markup, sales tax applies to parts and materials, and labor is not taxed.
The two hidden drivers are disassembly and colour difficulty. Every light, marker, rub rail, awning rail and graphic that comes off is time, and on a full repaint that stage alone can run forty hours before a single panel is sanded. Colour difficulty compounds it: a three stage pearl needs test panels, and on a sun faded unit it needs them per side because the driver side and the passenger side have aged differently.
On cost
A written estimate is $150 and credits in full against an authorized repair. Full repaints take a 50 percent deposit at authorization and a further 25 percent when materials are ordered.
Blend time and the argument you should not have to have
Almost every refinish dispute with a carrier is about blend panels. An automotive estimating system allows refinish on the damaged panel plus a percentage for blend, and on a solid colour sedan that is reasonable. On a 40 foot coach in a three stage pearl it is not, because the transition needs surface and the surface is where the money is.
The way through it is evidence rather than argument. The scope names which adjacent panels are being sprayed and why, and a photographed spray out card next to the unit shows what a single panel refinish would actually look like. Adjusters who see that approve blend time. Adjusters who receive a line item saying blend two panels without a reason ask why, and three weeks disappear.
On the claim
Clear coat failure and oxidation are excluded on every policy we bill. If your unit needs a repaint for those reasons, it is quoted to you directly and it is not part of a claim.
What goes through the booth in a typical month
Coaches dominate by hours and commercial units dominate by count. Diesel pushers and luxury Class A units come in for full repaints and pearl blends. Sprinters, box trucks and delivery vans come through for panel refinish and livery. Food trucks are their own category because the finish has to survive daily washing and the graphics carry the business identity, which makes matching both sides non negotiable.

- An X-Rite MA-5 QC reads the panel at multiple angles on a cleaned surface. Paint codes from a data plate describe what left the factory, not what is on your coach after fifteen summers.
- Spray out card checked in daylight
- Every mix is sprayed on a card, cured and compared to the panel outside the booth before a gun goes near the unit. Booth lighting flatters a mismatch that sunlight exposes instantly.
- Substrate preparation to the correct system
- Gelcoat, aluminum, fiberglass, steel and previously painted surfaces each get a different primer and sealer. Spraying one system over another is where paint failures start.
- Masked and staged booth time
- Units are masked, tacked and sprayed in a 60 foot downdraft booth with heated cure rather than in an open bay, which is what keeps dust out of a large horizontal surface.
- Blend into adjacent panels
- Repairs are carried across panel boundaries so the transition falls where the eye does not look, instead of stopping at a hard edge that reads as a repair forever.
- Decal and graphic reproductionwhere applicable
- Original graphics are photographed and measured before removal, then reproduced or resupplied so the finished unit matches on both sides.
How the work runs
Assess the existing finish before quoting

We check film thickness, look for prior repairs under a raking light and read the colour at several points along the unit. A coach that has already been resprayed once behaves differently from a factory finish and needs a different plan.
Decide the blend map
30 minutes
Which panels get colour, which get clear only and where the transition falls. This is the single decision that sets the price of a refinish job, and it is made against the finish system rather than against the damage.
Prepare, prime and seal
3 to 60 hours
Surfaces are sanded to the correct grit for the system, primed, blocked with guide coat and sealed. Sealer is not optional on a repaired panel because unsealed primer drinks colour unevenly and shifts a metallic.
Spray out, verify, then shoot
2 to 8 hours
The mix goes on a card, cures, and gets carried outside next to the unit. Only after it agrees in daylight does the coach get sprayed. On a pearl this loop can run three or four times before anyone is satisfied.
Cure, de nib and reassemble
4 to 40 hours
Heated cure, then inspection under booth and daylight, then correction of any nib or texture before trim and graphics go back on. The unit is not released until it has been looked at outside the building.

How estimating is billed

- In depth diagnostic, scan and programming: $285 per hour, one hour minimum, credited in full against an authorized repair.
- In shop pre purchase inspection: $400 to $1,200 depending on unit size and systems count.
- Insurance walk ins are accepted during posted hours. All inspection and estimating work is performed in shop at the Yorba Linda facility.
Turnaround and shop capacity
Typical turnaround is 4 to 45 shop days. A blended panel repair leaves in four to seven shop days. A full coach repaint is a booth commitment of four to nine weeks including preparation, because the booth cannot run another job around it and the cure schedule is fixed.

How insurance treats this work
- Usually covered
- Refinish of the damaged panel plus the blend area needed to make the repair invisible is standard on any covered loss. Carriers pay blend time when the scope states which adjacent panels are involved and why.
- Usually not covered
- Clear coat failure from ultraviolet exposure, oxidation and a repaint of undamaged panels because the owner wants the whole unit to match are not losses. That work is quoted directly and billed to you.
- Where supplements come from
- Moderate. The usual dispute is blend area on a metallic or pearl, where an automotive estimate allows one panel and the finish genuinely needs three. Spray out cards photographed against the unit end that argument quickly.

- Why do you have to paint panels that were not damaged?
- Because a metallic or pearl never lays flake identically twice, so a hard edge between old and new reads as a repair from across a parking lot. Carrying the colour into adjacent panels puts the transition where nothing draws the eye. On a solid colour it is often unnecessary and we say so.
- I have the paint code from the data plate. Is that not enough?
- It tells us the starting formula and nothing about your unit today. Manufacturers changed batches and suppliers, and fifteen years of sun has moved the colour anyway, often differently on each side. We read the actual panel and mix to that, then verify on a card before spraying.
- Is a full coach repaint worth it or should I sell as is?
- It depends on what is under the paint. A structurally sound coach with failed clear is a good candidate. A unit with soft walls, wet decking or a tired chassis is not, because the paint will outlast everything behind it. We look at the whole unit before quoting a repaint and will tell you when the money is better spent elsewhere.
- Can a 43 foot motorhome actually fit in a paint booth?
- Ours is 60 feet of clear length with a 16 foot door, so a 45 foot coach goes in as one unit. That matters because painting a coach in two halves means two cure cycles meeting somewhere in the middle, and that meeting point is visible under sunlight no matter how carefully it is done.
- Do you spray waterborne or solvent basecoat?
- Waterborne basecoat through PPG Envirobase and Axalta Cromax lines, which is what California air quality rules require and what the modern colour libraries are built around. Clears and primers are conventional. The system matters less than whether the shop follows the technical data sheet for the one it uses.
- How long before I can wash or wax a freshly painted unit?
- Wash gently after two weeks with plain water and a soft mitt. No wax, no sealant and no ceramic coating for at least sixty days, because fresh film continues to release solvent and anything sealing the surface traps it. We give written aftercare at pickup rather than assuming you already know.
- Can original factory graphics be reproduced after a panel is replaced?
- In most cases yes. We photograph and measure the existing layout before anything is removed, then have the graphics reproduced to those dimensions or source them from the manufacturer where they are still available. Doing the measuring after removal is how a swoosh ends up an inch off between sides.
- Is some orange peel in a new finish normal?
- A small amount is normal and matching the texture of the surrounding factory finish is usually the goal, because a mirror flat repair next to factory texture is just as visible as a mismatch. What is not acceptable is dust nibs, runs or sanding marks telegraphing through, and those get corrected before release.
