The Vocabulary on an RV Repair Order, Term by Term

What do the technical terms on an RV repair order mean?

This glossary defines the construction, mechanism and billing vocabulary used across the OCRV Center site: substrates such as Azdel and lauan, failure modes such as delamination, slide hardware such as Schwintek, and claim words such as supplement and betterment. Definitions were written from repair orders at the Yorba Linda shop.

A repair order is not written to be readable by the person paying for it. It is written to be unambiguous to a technician and to an adjuster, which means it is full of words that look like jargon and are actually precise. Knowing eight of them changes how a conversation about your vehicle goes.

Terms are grouped by where you will meet them. Construction and mechanism words appear on the repair side. Claim words appear on the insurance side and are defined properly on their own pages, so they get one clause and a link here rather than a second competing definition.

How to use this glossary

Read the construction section first if you own the vehicle and the insurance section first if you are holding a claim number. The two vocabularies barely overlap, and confusing them is where owners lose arguments: describing a covered event in maintenance language, or describing normal wear as damage, both push a file in the wrong direction before anybody has looked at the unit.

Where a term is defined at length elsewhere on this site, this page gives you the one clause version and sends you to the owning page. That is deliberate. Two definitions of betterment on one website eventually disagree with each other, and the one people quote is never the one that was maintained.

Construction and materials

These describe what the vehicle is built from, and they determine what a repair costs more than the size of the damage does. The same six inch puncture is a two hour job on filon over lauan and a two day job on a vacuum bonded wall where the bond has let go around it.

  • Azdel: a composite substrate used behind an outer skin instead of plywood. It does not absorb water or rot, which changes both the failure mode and the repair.
  • Lauan: thin tropical plywood used as a substrate and as decking. It rots, delaminates and goes dark when wet, and a soft spot underfoot is usually lauan giving up.
  • Delamination: loss of bond between the outer skin and its substrate. It presents as a bubble, a hollow sound when tapped, or a wall that flexes under hand pressure.
  • Gelcoat: a pigmented resin surface on moulded fiberglass, not paint. It chalks under ultraviolet exposure and can often be cut and polished back rather than refinished.
  • Filon: a fiberglass reinforced sheet used as an exterior skin, usually bonded to a substrate. Repairable, but its surface texture makes an invisible patch harder than on gelcoat.
  • EPDM: a synthetic rubber roof membrane. Flexible, repairable, and identifiable because it chalks white and marks with a fingernail.
  • TPO: a thermoplastic roof membrane, usually stiffer and brighter than EPDM. Different products and sealants apply, and using the wrong one is a leak in two seasons.
  • Vacuum bonded sidewall: a wall pressed as a single laminate of skin, substrate, insulation and frame. Strong and light, and unforgiving once the bond fails.
  • Body on frame and unibody: whether the living structure sits on a separate chassis or is part of a stressed shell. It decides which anchoring fixtures a structural pull needs.

Mechanisms, hardware and seals

Slide, awning and seal hardware is named by family rather than by part number, because the family tells a technician how it fails. Two rooms of identical size on different drive systems wear in completely different places, and the repair for one is not the repair for the other.

  • Schwintek: a Lippert in wall slide drive with vertical rails and a gear pack. Wear concentrates at the end of travel and shows as a room that runs crooked or stalls.
  • Accu Slide: a BAL cable driven slide system. Cable tension and pulley wear drive most of its faults, so a room that is out of square is often a tension issue rather than a motor.
  • Power Gear: a rack and pinion slide family. Failures tend to be rack wear, motor brushes or a mounting that has loosened enough to change tooth engagement.
  • Gear pack: the toothed assembly a slide motor drives. A rounded tooth profile is the difference between replacing a motor and rebuilding the rail it runs in.
  • Wiper seal and bulb seal: a wiper sweeps the room as it moves, a bulb compresses to seal it closed. A bulb that has taken a compression set from age no longer seals and is not a covered loss.
  • Torsion arm: the spring loaded arm on a patio awning. It stores the energy that makes an awning dangerous after a wind event, which is why it is not a driveway repair.
  • Kwikee: a family of electric entry steps. Faults are usually the linkage, the ground path or a controller rather than the motor itself.
  • Dicor and Eternabond: a self levelling lap sealant and a butyl seam tape. They are not interchangeable at a given joint, and choosing wrongly produces a leak that appears two winters later.

Insurance vocabulary, defined on its own pages

Each of these has a page that treats it properly, with worked examples and the arguments that actually move an adjuster. What follows is the one clause version so you can recognise the word on a document, plus the link to the page that owns it.

  • Deductible: the amount you carry yourself on each claim before the policy pays anything.
  • Betterment: a deduction applied when a replaced part leaves the vehicle better than the loss found it.
  • Actual cash value: what the unit was worth immediately before the loss, depreciation included.
  • Agreed value: a figure set with the carrier in advance, so valuation is not argued after a loss.
  • Supplement: an addition to an approved scope, raised when teardown exposes damage nobody could see.
  • Total loss threshold: the point where repair cost against value makes a carrier stop paying to repair.
  • Loss of use: cover for the cost of being without the vehicle, which many policies simply do not include.
  • Comprehensive and collision: the two coverage types that split damage by cause rather than by severity.
  • Direct billing: the shop invoices your carrier rather than you paying and waiting for reimbursement.

Billing and process vocabulary

These are the words on your paperwork rather than in your vehicle. They exist to make an invoice checkable line by line, and knowing them is how you audit one instead of accepting it.

  • Body hour: one hour of body and paint labor, billed at $210, with body supplies charged per body hour.
  • Mechanical hour: one hour of mechanical or electrical labor at $260, used for slides, systems and chassis work.
  • Diagnostic hour: investigation time at $285 with a one hour minimum, credited in full against an authorized repair.
  • Price band: the published range for a job class, wide on purpose because scope genuinely varies that much.
  • Written repair estimate: the $150 document that scope gets authorized against, credited if you proceed.
  • Teardown: controlled disassembly to expose and document what could not be seen from outside.
  • Structural release: the sign off stating measured structure is within dimension, which gates all cosmetic work.
  • Blend: carrying new coating into an adjacent panel so no hard edge exists between old finish and new.
  • Spray out card: a sprayed and cured sample held against the actual panel to confirm a match before the unit is painted.

Four terms owners routinely misuse

These four cause more confusion than the rest of the glossary combined, usually because a previous shop used them loosely. Getting them right changes what an adjuster hears.

  • Water damage is not a cause. Ask what let the water in, because a storm and a failed seal are covered differently.
  • Fiberglass repair is not the same as delamination repair. The first is a surface, the second is a bond, and only one of them requires opening the wall.
  • A leaking slide is rarely a seal fault. A room that racks chews its seal, so replacing the seal alone puts a new part on an unresolved geometry.
  • Frame damage is not the same as a bent frame. Damage is displacement measured against published dimensions, and plenty of it is invisible to the eye.

Appendix: questions and answers

Which of these words will actually appear on my paperwork?
Body hour, mechanical hour, teardown, blend and price band appear on almost every file. Structural release appears whenever the rack was involved. Supplement appears on most claim files. The construction terms show up in the findings section, which is the part of an estimate worth reading closely because it explains why the hours are what they are.
What is the difference between delamination and a blister?
Scale and cause. A blister is usually a small local lift, often from moisture or a coating failure, and it can sometimes be repaired at the surface. Delamination is the bond between skin and substrate letting go across an area, so the wall flexes and sounds hollow. Filling over it produces a repair that reappears within a season.
Is Azdel better than lauan behind a sidewall?
For water resistance, clearly. Azdel does not absorb water or rot, so a leak that would have destroyed a lauan substrate often leaves the wall serviceable. It is not automatically better structurally, and it does not prevent a bond failure. If you are buying used, knowing which one is behind the skin changes what a soft spot means.
