A destination trailer occupies an unusual middle ground. It has the frame, axles and coupler of a towable, but the layout, the windows and the fittings of a small cottage, and it is expected to move perhaps twice a year. It is not a travel trailer that happens to be big, and it is not a park model that happens to have a tongue.

The consequence is that it fails from being stationary. A travel trailer wears out at its welds and seals from thousands of road cycles. A destination trailer bows, ponds and flexes because it sits level for months on end with slides extended and utilities connected.

It fails from standing still

Everything on this page follows from a use pattern. A travel trailer is towed repeatedly and its failures are cyclic: tongue welds, seals, bushings. A destination trailer is towed twice a year and sits level and loaded in between, and its failures are the opposite: creep, ponding, permanent set and slow corrosion at connections.

It is genuinely worth stating because owners of these units frequently ask for the maintenance schedule of a travel trailer, and it does not apply. Checking tongue welds annually is far less useful here than checking whether the roof still drains and whether the sidewall is still straight along its length.

Forty feet of rail on one axle group

A destination trailer is longer than most travel trailers and it carries heavier fittings, on the same basic arrangement: one tandem axle group somewhere near the middle and long unsupported rail lengths fore and aft. That is fine when the load is intermittent and the rail spends most of its life empty.

Here it is loaded continuously for four or five months at a time, and creep does not care that the load is static. The rail takes a permanent set at the hangers, which produces a floor that is no longer flat and doors that no longer close the way they used to. Sighting along the outside of the sidewall is the quickest field check available.

Note

Sight along the outside of the sidewall from one end each spring. A long trailer that has taken a set shows it there long before a door starts binding.

The better you level it, the worse the roof drains

Owners level a destination trailer carefully, and they are right to. Drawers stay shut, appliances work properly, doors close. The consequence is that a roof with very little crown ends up with almost no fall, and water sits on it rather than running off.

Standing water is a completely different load on a lap seam than passing water. It finds every penetration, every sealant edge and every screw line, and it has months to do it. When we repair one of these roofs we look at drainage as part of the scope, because restoring the membrane without giving the water somewhere to go repeats the failure.

A slide extended for five months

A slide room is a cantilevered load on the sidewall and on the floor edge. On a touring trailer that load arrives for a weekend and then goes away. On a destination trailer it is applied continuously for a season, and materials creep under sustained load in a way they do not under intermittent load.

On a long sidewall the result is a visible bow, and the slide then no longer travels squarely in its own opening. Correcting it means addressing the opening and the floor edge rather than adjusting the mechanism, and it is one of the few problems where retracting the room for part of the season is genuinely useful advice.

The move is what breaks the windows

Large residential style windows and patio doors are attractive and they are sealed on the assumption of very little frame movement, which is a fair assumption for a unit that sits still. Then it is hitched up and towed to a new site, and the frame flexes properly for the first time in a year.

Seals that had been undisturbed break open during that trip, and the leak develops slowly over the following weeks at the new site. It is worth photographing the unit before and after a relocation for exactly this reason, because by the time the stain appears nobody remembers the move.

Structural, roof and body work bills at $210 per hour with body supplies at $5 per body hour and paint supplies at $55 per paint hour. Plumbing, slides and electrical work is $260 per hour. A written estimate is $150, credited in full against an authorized repair.

Shop fit

Will it fit in the shop?

A 42 foot destination trailer is at the upper end of what we take in as a towable, and it fits the bays and the sixty foot booth. What these need that a travel trailer does not is frame measurement along the whole length, which means supporting it at ride height on the frame with reference points established fore and aft of the axle group. Slides have to be cycled during structural work, so these are staged in an open bay with side clearance rather than in the booth.

Insurance considerations for this vehicle

  • Establish whether the trailer is covered where it sits. Some policies limit coverage for a unit that has been stationary at a commercial site beyond a stated period, which is precisely how these are used.
  • Ponding damage is treated as maintenance rather than storm damage in almost every case, because the water sat rather than arrived. A single storm event that overwhelmed a roof is a different file and needs dating.
  • Relocation damage is worth documenting on both ends of the move. Photograph the unit before it is hitched and after it arrives, because window and door seals frequently break open during the trip and the leak appears weeks later.
