A garage fifth wheel is two vehicles sharing one frame. In front of the axles it is a living space with a stepped deck and a kingpin. Behind the axles it is a cargo trailer with a reinforced floor, tie down anchors and a rear wall that folds down into a ramp. The frame has to do both jobs, and the two ends load it in opposite directions.

Because the garage is behind the axle group, everything in it acts on a lever. A thousand pounds of side by side loaded at the tail applies far more than a thousand pounds of bending to the rails, and it also lifts pin weight off the truck, which changes how the whole rig tows.

Twelve hundred pounds of side by side parked at the tail does not apply twelve hundred pounds of bending to the rails, it applies considerably more, and it simultaneously lifts weight off the kingpin.

That second effect matters for how the rig tows. Loading the very back of the garage reduces pin weight, which reduces the stability the fifth wheel configuration exists to provide. Closed, the ramp door is the rear wall: a structural panel carrying a compression seal all round. Lowered, it is a ramp with a machine driving over it. Part way down and unsupported, it is a cantilever hanging off a hinge line that runs the full width of the trailer at floor level.

Nothing else on a recreational vehicle has three load cases that different, and the hinge sees all of them. The tearing starts at the outer ends of the hinge line, because that is where torsion is highest when a machine is driven up one side of the ramp rather than straight up the middle.

Drive machines up the centre of the ramp, not up one side. Off centre loading twists the hinge line and starts the tearing at its outer ends.

Rated floors and point loads

A garage floor is rated for a distributed load, and a side by side delivers its weight through four contact patches instead. If a wheel sits between crossmembers rather than over one, several hundred pounds is bearing on unsupported decking, and if the machine is always parked in the same place, that decking eventually takes a permanent set.

The remedy is either additional crossmembers where the wheels actually land, or a load spreading track system on the floor. Both are worth doing on a trailer that carries the same machine every trip, and both cost far less than replacing garage decking that has been progressively crushed for five seasons.

Tie down anchors and shock loads

A D ring is the interface between a strap under tension and a floor. In normal use it carries a steady pull in a designed direction. When a machine shifts in transit, that same anchor takes a shock load from an unplanned angle, and because it is bolted into a local reinforcement rather than a full width member, it takes the surrounding decking with it.

When we replace pulled anchors we back them into a member that spans the floor rather than into a plate, and we look at whether the anchor positions actually suit the machine being carried. Anchors in the wrong place lead to straps at the wrong angle, which is what produces the shock load in the first place.

Will it fit in the shop?

A 44 foot garage fifth wheel is one of the longest towables we take, and it fits the sixty foot booth with the ramp closed. Ramp door and rear frame work needs the trailer supported at ride height on the frame with the rear clear so the door can be lowered fully inside the building, which our bay depth allows. We also lower and cycle the ramp under load during alignment work, which is not something that can be done in a driveway, so all of it stays in shop at Yorba Linda.

Claim

Insurance considerations for this vehicle

  • Damage caused by cargo shifting in the garage is frequently excluded, because the carrier reads it as improper securement rather than a covered peril. Photographing how a machine was strapped before a trip is genuinely worth the thirty seconds.
  • Rear frame sag from years of tail loading is fatigue and it will not be paid. A sudden bend from a ramp strike or a high centre event is a different file, and the two look similar once the trailer is sitting still.
