The standard cargo van is the most repaired vehicle in any commercial shop and the one most often repaired badly. It is cheap relative to the work it does, it lives in alleys and loading zones, and there is constant pressure to make a dent look acceptable rather than to make the panel right. That works until the day the van is sold or the day the same corner gets hit again.
There is one fact that decides almost every repair decision in this class, and it has nothing to do with brand loyalty. A Transit or a ProMaster is a unibody. An Express or a Savana is a body bolted to a frame. Those two structures fail differently, get measured differently and cost different money to put back.

This page is the baseline: a standard wheelbase, standard or medium roof cargo van under 9,600 lb GVWR. Stretch the wheelbase and add rear overhang and it becomes an extended cargo van. Drop the roof to clear a parking structure and it is a low roof van. Put a separate box body on a cutaway chassis and you have a high cube van, which is a different structure entirely.
Unibody or body on frame changes everything
A Transit and a ProMaster are unitized. The floor, the sides and the roof are one structure, and a hit at the front corner changes the relationship between the strut towers whether or not any panel looks bent. Those vans get measured. An Express or a Savana carries its body on a separate ladder frame, which means a similar hit may bend a frame horn while the body shell stays true, and it may also mean the body can be re-shimmed to sit right again.
Getting this wrong is the most expensive mistake in the class. A unibody van repaired by eye drives crooked, wears tires and never quite closes its doors the same. A body on frame van sent to the measuring bench for a fender scrape burns hours nobody needed. We sort that at intake, not at teardown.

Why a ribbed side panel does not come back with a hammer
The ribs in a van side are structure. They stiffen a very large panel so it can be thin, and that means the flat between two ribs behaves like a drum head while the rib itself behaves like a beam. Push a dent out of the flat and you stretch metal that has nowhere to go, so the panel takes on a shallow wave you can see under any fluorescent light. Push on the rib and you have deformed a beam.
Our rule is simple and it saves arguments. Damage inside one flat, between two undisturbed ribs, is repairable. Damage that crosses a rib or has kinked a rib gets sectioned or replaced at a seam. We show the customer where the rib line runs and where the boundary of the repair will be, because it is the difference between a four hour panel repair and a sixteen hour section and reskin at the posted $210 body rate.
The sliding door is the highest cycle part on the van
Nothing else on a work van moves as often. Forty stops a day is fifteen thousand cycles a year through a lower track that sits at bumper height and collects everything the road throws at it. The roller flat spots, the door begins to drop, and the striker starts carrying weight. Owners hear a bang instead of a click and assume the latch.
We inspect three things in order: roller and carriage condition, track straightness, and the pillar the striker is bolted to. Replacing a roller on a bent track is a repeat visit. Straightening the track and leaving a worn roller is the same. The pillar matters because once a striker has been hammered for a year, its mounting area is elongated and needs metal work before anything will hold adjustment.
Front wheel drive noses and parking blocks
The ProMaster earns its own paragraph. Front wheel drive gives it a flat floor and a low step, which is exactly why the lower front structure is close to the ground and finds parking blocks, raised curbs and the concrete lip in older loading zones. The bumper cover takes the paint damage and the lower support and subframe take the load.
Because the platform is unitized, a front hit that moves a subframe mounting point changes camber and thrust angle. The symptom the driver reports is a pull or an inside tire wearing out in six thousand miles, months after the cosmetic repair. Measuring before you order parts is what prevents that phone call.
Roof dents, racks and the clearance bar
A standard roof van has very little crown, so any roof damage is highly visible and hard to hide. Clearance bars at parking structures and canopies at car washes account for most of it, along with tree limbs on the canyon roads. The panel between bows cannot be pushed cold without waving, so a roof repair is usually a controlled shrink and skim or a panel section, not a push.
Racks add a second failure. A ladder rack loaded to its rating puts real force into a handful of mounting points, and if those points went into roof skin instead of the reinforced pads at the pillars, the skin dimples around each foot. We move the mounting to structure and add backing plates as part of the repair rather than replacing the same panel twice.
What a load shift does to the inside of a van
Cargo restraint failures leave a signature. A partition pushed forward off its anchors, torn metal at the B pillar mount, and a floor with fresh gouges running toward the front. It is not a subtle diagnosis. The repair usually means new anchor structure, not just new anchors, because the tear took surrounding panel with it.
We rebuild those points with plates that spread load into the floor pan and the pillar rather than into single fasteners, and we tell operators plainly when the real fix is E track and straps in the cargo area. A partition is a barrier, not a restraint system, and using it as one is how the same van comes back twice.
Note
If a partition has moved forward once, inspect the floor anchors and the seat belt mounting area on the same pillar. Those share structure more often than owners expect.
Turning vans without losing the week
Body work bills at $210 per hour and body supplies add $5 per body hour, so a small van repair stays legible on one page and takes no deposit, since deposits begin above $2,000. A written estimate is $150 and credits in full against an authorized repair. For fleets we quote the whole batch at once and sequence them so one van is in the booth while the next is in metal.

Sliding door dropping with a flat spotted lower roller
A plumbing or parts van opens the slider forty times a shift and the lower carriage rides in an open track a foot off the ground. Grit packs the track, the roller develops a flat, and the door begins landing on the striker. Left alone the striker wears into the pillar and a hardware job becomes a panel job.

Work vans get loaded where there is space, which in this county means alleys, planters and canyon shoulder turnouts off Santa Margarita Parkway. The scrape lands along the rocker and into the rear quarter, and because the panel is ribbed, the flat sections dent while the rib itself stretches. Those two damage types need different treatment on the same repair.

Will it fit in the shop?
A standard cargo van is the fastest unit we turn. It fits any bay, sits on a lift for underside and subframe access, and takes a booth slot in a fraction of the time a coach needs, which is why we can slot fleet vans between larger jobs instead of behind them. For operators running four to ten vans, that scheduling flexibility matters more than anything about the building: we stage two at a time so one is in paint while the next is in metal, and the fleet loses one unit rather than two.
Insurance considerations for this vehicle
- Alley and loading zone scrapes are collision losses even at walking speed, and they carry the collision deductible. Fleets carrying a high deductible on a modest repair often pay it themselves and skip the claim entirely, which is a legitimate choice and we will price the job either way.
- On a unibody van, a first estimate that lists a bumper cover and a headlamp after a curb strike is incomplete more often than not. The subframe measurement is what supports the supplement, so it goes in the file before anything is ordered.
- Cargo that was not restrained is the operator's exposure, not the carrier's. Damage from a load shifting during a hard stop is commonly written as a maintenance or loading issue rather than a covered impact.
Appendix: questions and answers
- Is a Transit or ProMaster built the same way as a Chevy Express?
- No. Transit and ProMaster are unibody vans where floor, sides and roof form one structure, so front damage gets measured on a bench. Express and Savana carry the body on a separate ladder frame, which changes both the diagnosis and the repair. We identify which family a van belongs to before writing any scope.
- Can a dent that crosses a rib in a van side be repaired?
- Rarely well. A rib is a beam and once it is kinked the panel has lost its stiffness, so pushing it back leaves a wave that shows under any overhead light. Damage inside one flat between two undisturbed ribs is repairable. Damage across a rib is a section or a replacement at a factory seam.
- My van slider bangs instead of clicking shut. What is failing?
- Usually the lower roller has flat spotted and the door is landing on the striker. We check roller and carriage, then track straightness, then the pillar the striker mounts to. All three matter: a new roller on a bent track fails again, and a hammered striker area needs metal work before any adjustment will hold.
- Why does my ProMaster pull after a curb strike that only broke plastic?
- Because the load went past the cover into the lower support and subframe. On a unitized van, a moved subframe point changes camber and thrust angle, and the driver feels a pull or sees an inside tire gone in six thousand miles. Measuring before parts are ordered is what keeps that from becoming a second repair.
- Why is the roof dimpled around my ladder rack feet?
- The rack was mounted into roof skin rather than into the reinforced pads above the pillars. A loaded rack puts hundreds of pounds through four small footprints, and thin roof panel dishes around each one. We relocate the mounting to structure and add backing plates during the repair so the same panel is not replaced twice.
