A parcel van makes more than a hundred stops a shift, and each one involves a driver at a door, a step, a curb and frequently a loading dock. That produces a damage list that is repetitive and completely predictable: door headers, step corners, bumper ends, mirror arms and the curbside panel a driver brushes against a hedge fifty times a week.

What is different about the electric versions is what those panels are made of and what is underneath the floor. Large body panels are composite rather than steel, which means they are not filled and not welded, they are replaced as modules. The roll up door and its header

A rear roll up door opens at every stop, which on a busy route is over a hundred cycles a day. The header above it is the structure that takes any dock or low overhang strike, and a driver backing to a dock at a slight angle loads one corner of that header hard.

The result is a cracked header, a twisted track and a curtain that no longer runs freely. We repair the header and the opening structure first, then set the tracks parallel, then run the curtain through its full travel repeatedly before release. Fitting a new curtain into a distorted opening is a repair that lasts a week.

Nothing gets welded near the pack

The high voltage pack sits under the load floor and it is the reason the step in height is low enough for a driver to work efficiently. It is also the reason there is a firm rule in this building: no welding, cutting or grinding heat happens in the vicinity of the pack, on any vehicle, in any circumstance.

Where a repair genuinely requires hot work near that zone, the plan changes rather than the rule. That usually means the repair is a bolted or bonded solution instead, or the manufacturer network is involved, or the van is a total loss candidate. Owners occasionally push for a quick weld. The answer stays the same.

Underbody contact on one of these vans is an inspection item, not a cosmetic one. A parking block strike takes ten minutes to check on a lift and it is the cheapest ten minutes in the whole repair.

Parts come from one place and that sets the calendar

There is no aftermarket for a composite body module, a purpose built bumper end or an electric van specific door track. Everything comes through the manufacturer network, and lead times are genuinely variable in a way steel van parts are not.

So we quote with the parts position stated. If a module is available, the van is a two week job. If it is on allocation, the honest answer might be six weeks and a depot needs to know that before it commits a unit. Fleets that let us stock the recurring items, bumper ends and marker lights, avoid most of that pain.

State of charge, intake and no roadside

We ask depots to deliver vans with a moderate state of charge rather than nearly full or nearly empty. Full is unnecessary and adds risk while a vehicle sits, and empty makes it impossible to move the van around the building or verify systems at the end of the job.

There is no roadside operation here and nothing about this shop is a mobile repair service, which matters because depots ask constantly. A van that cannot be driven arrives on a flatbed. We log it, photograph it and scan it at the gate, and the depot gets the intake record the same day.

The rear roll up door is opened and closed at every stop and the header above it is the structure that takes any dock or low overhang strike. A 27 foot parcel van fits the bays and the booth without difficulty, and the useful capability for a depot is throughput: we can hold several vans inside at once and sequence them so a route fleet loses one unit at a time rather than three. High voltage disable happens in a designated area with the state documented, no welding takes place near the pack under any circumstances, and a van with a suspect pack is isolated outdoors with separation from other vehicles.

Insurance considerations for this vehicle
