An RV appliance is an ordinary machine asked to work on three different power sources while bolted into a vehicle that shakes. That is why the failure rate looks alarming and why so many appliance complaints turn out not to be appliance faults at all. A refrigerator that cools on shore power and quits on propane has a gas supply problem. A furnace that clicks three times and locks out is protecting itself from something. A rooftop unit that trips a breaker on start is telling you about voltage.

The five paths below are grouped by appliance because that is how owners search, and each one begins with the same supply checks. Use the table to find your row, and note which power source the fault appears on, because that single detail changes the diagnosis more than the make and model does.

Measure what feeds it before you blame it

The single most useful habit in RV appliance work is refusing to open the appliance first. Every one of these machines depends on a supply that is easy to measure and frequently wrong: propane at a delivery pressure set by a two stage regulator, 120 volt AC that sags at a long extension cord or a tired pedestal, and 12 volt DC that the appliance boards use for ignition and control. A refrigerator, a furnace and a water heater that all went weak in the same month are not three failures. They are one regulator.

Airflow is the fourth supply and the one nobody thinks of as a supply at all. An absorption refrigerator moves heat out through a vent path behind the cabinet, and blocked or badly built ventilation will make a perfectly healthy unit underperform in summer heat. A rooftop air conditioner needs return air and a clean condenser, and a furnace needs enough duct flow to satisfy a sail switch. In each case the appliance is doing exactly what it was designed to do with what it is being given.

Refrigerators, absorption and compressor

Two very different machines wear the same cabinet. An absorption unit has no compressor and moves heat with a heated ammonia solution, which is why it runs silently, why it needs to be reasonably level to circulate, and why the failure signature is a sharp chemical smell at the lower vent when the sealed system lets go. A compressor unit behaves like a domestic refrigerator and cares about voltage instead of level. Both can be starved by poor ventilation and both can fail at their control board, and the first fork in the diagnosis is always which type is in front of us.

Ranges, ovens and cooktops

Cooking appliances in a coach are simple and they fail in a small number of ways, most of them at the safety devices that prove a flame is present. An oven that lights, burns for a few seconds and dies has not convinced its thermocouple, so the valve closes. Yellow flames lifting off a burner cap mean the air to gas mixture is wrong or the port is partly blocked. One burner working while its neighbour barely produces a ring is almost always debris in an orifice rather than a valve. And a glass lid cracked at its hinge is a body repair pretending to be an appliance job.

Microwaves and convection units

Microwaves are the appliance most often misread as broken when the supply is at fault, because they are sensitive to the waveform an inverter produces as well as to voltage. A display dead on inverter power and normal on shore power is not a failed unit. Genuine faults are the interlock that will not confirm the door is closed, arcing inside the cavity, and a magnetron that has stopped producing while the turntable and fan carry on cheerfully. On a combination unit the microwave and convection functions fail independently, which surprises owners.

Rooftop air conditioning

Rooftop units are the appliance most likely to be blamed for something that is not their fault, because their performance depends on voltage at start, airflow across two coils and the temperature of a roof they are sitting on. A unit that hums and then trips is usually a capacitor or a start voltage problem. A coil that ices over is short of airflow, not short of refrigerant. Water dripping down the interior ceiling around the plenum after rain is a gasket, and that is a sealing job rather than a cooling one. These units also age noisily long before they stop working.

Furnaces and hydronic heat

Heating splits into two worlds. A forced air furnace is a burner, a blower, a sail switch and a limit, and its classic failure is a lockout after three ignition attempts, which is the appliance refusing to keep trying because something is not right. A hydronic system on a larger coach heats fluid and circulates it to zones, so hot water at the tap while the coach stays cold is a circulation fault rather than a burner fault. Both suffer from the same enemy in Southern California storage: spider web and debris in a burner tube.

Propane is one system, and it explains multiple faults at once

If more than one gas appliance has gone weak or unreliable, stop looking at the appliances. A coach has one LP supply: tank or cylinders, a two stage regulator, a manifold and a run of copper or steel to each appliance. Regulators drift and fail, and when they do, delivery pressure drops at every appliance simultaneously. The symptom set is distinctive: a refrigerator that cools poorly on gas, a furnace that lights and then drops out, a water heater that is fine on electric and marginal on propane, and a cooktop with lazy flames.

So any gas job here includes a manometer reading taken at the appliance while it is actually firing, which is a different number from static pressure at the tank. Every joint we disturb gets leak tested electronically and by pressure, and a $45 flat hazmat and disposal charge covers handling. This is also the part of the department where we will refuse to finish and hand back a unit: an appliance that will run but leaks, or that vents combustion products into the living space, does not leave in that condition.

Before you proceed

If you smell propane inside the coach, shut the supply at the tank and do not run the unit. Bring it in on that basis and say so at the counter, because it changes where we park it.

Repair against replacement, which is really a parts question

The economics in this category are decided by the parts network rather than by the labor. Current models are well supported and most repairs make obvious sense. Units from fifteen or twenty years ago are a different conversation: absorption cooling units, older control boards and discontinued furnace assemblies are variously expensive, back ordered or simply gone. We establish availability before you authorize, because the worst outcome here is a unit stranded in a bay waiting for something that is never going to ship.

Replacement brings its own scope. A modern box rarely matches an old opening, so the job includes cabinet modification, ventilation brought to the new specification, a gas line adapted or capped, and an electrical feed sized for what you have chosen. Owners moving from absorption to a compressor refrigerator also need to look honestly at their house bank, because a residential style box wants continuous DC and a lead acid pair will not enjoy that.

Cost, access and the hazmat line

Appliance work bills at $260 per hour from the mechanical and electrical department, with a $45 flat hazmat and disposal charge where LP, refrigerant or chemicals are involved. Parts carry standard markup, sales tax applies to parts and materials, labor is not taxed, and a written estimate is $150 credited in full against an authorized repair. Most jobs on this page are among the smaller numbers in the building.

Access decides the rest. A furnace under a dinette with a removable panel is straightforward. The same furnace buried behind a fixed cabinet run in a fifth wheel means carpentry before diagnosis. Rooftop units add roof access and a gasket every time they are lifted. Refrigerators frequently have to come out through a doorway they barely passed through on the way in, which occasionally means removing a screen door frame and always means two technicians.

On cost

Appliance jobs over $2,000 take a 50 percent deposit at authorization. Special order cooling units and control boards are ordered on full payment because they are not returnable.

Appliances and claims, which mostly do not meet

Be realistic about this category and insurance. An appliance that stopped working is not a claim. What gets paid is appliance damage caused by something else: a collision that crushed a refrigerator vent, a fire, a documented surge that took out several boards at once, or water from a covered roof loss reaching a furnace. In those cases the replacement and the cabinet work to fit it belong in the same scope as the rest of the repair.

The one that catches people out is a fire that began at an appliance. Those claims are usually paid, and they are also investigated, so keep the unit as it is and let the adjuster see it before anything is cleaned up or removed. Our claims coordinator documents the compartment before teardown for exactly that reason.

On the claim

An appliance that failed on its own is not a covered loss. Where an accident or a surge damaged it, the replacement and the opening work are scoped together with the rest of the claim.

What we take, and where we stop

RV appliances in coaches, trailers, fifth wheels, truck campers and van conversions, plus the residential appliances owners have fitted into them. On mobile business units we work on the vehicle systems and the domestic appliances. What we do not do is certify commercial cooking equipment against a health department or fire code specification, which is a separate inspection an operator has to pass, and we do not perform manufacturer recall work on cooling units, which has to go through the maker's own program.

Flame quality, flue condition, spider web and rodent debris in a burner tube, and a leak check at every joint we disturbed. Gas work finishes with a test, not with a hope.
Level verification on absorption refrigerators
The box is checked on level and its history discussed, because an absorption unit run out of level long enough gets damaged internally and no amount of board work restores it.
Parts availability confirmed before authorization
On discontinued models we establish what is still supplied before you commit, so a partial repair does not strand your unit waiting for something nobody makes.

Process

How the work runs

  1. Establish which source fails

    15 minutes

    We ask you to run the appliance on each available source and report what happens. Working on electric and dead on gas, or the reverse, splits the possible causes roughly in half before a single panel is removed.

  2. Measure supply at the appliance

    45 minutes

    A manometer goes on the gas line at the appliance, a meter goes on the AC and DC feeds, and airflow is checked. Roughly a third of the appliances we see here need nothing beyond correcting what feeds them.

  3. Test the appliance itself and price the decision

    1 to 3 hours

    Boards, elements, valves, capacitors and cooling units are tested rather than swapped. On an older unit we price repair against replacement, including the cabinet work a different size box would need.

  4. Repair, or fit the replacement properly

    2 to 14 hours

    Where an appliance is replaced, the opening, ventilation, gas line, electrical feed and retaining structure are all brought to suit the new unit. A box wedged into an opening it does not fit is a fire risk, not a repair.

  5. Run it through a full cycle and leak test

    1 to 6 hours

    Refrigerators are run to temperature on each source, heating appliances are cycled from a cold start, and every gas joint disturbed gets a manometer and electronic leak check before the unit leaves.

How insurance treats this work

Usually covered
An appliance damaged in a collision, in a fire, by a documented electrical surge or by water intrusion from a covered loss is normally paid. So is the cabinet and ventilation work needed to fit a replacement where the original is no longer supplied.
Usually not covered
An appliance that reached the end of its life, a cooling unit that failed from years of running out of level, and a control board that simply died are not sudden accidental losses. Manufacturer recall work belongs with the manufacturer, not with a policy.
Where supplements come from
Low on the appliance and moderate on the opening. Once an old unit is out, the ventilation, gas line and surrounding cabinetry are visible for the first time and frequently need work the original estimate could not have seen.

Appendix: questions and answers

Which appliance page do I need if nothing propane works at all?
None of them yet. When several gas appliances are affected together, the supply is the suspect and the two stage regulator is first on the list. We measure delivery pressure with a manometer at an appliance while it fires, which either explains everything or clears the supply in one test.
Is it worth repairing a fifteen year old RV refrigerator?
It depends entirely on what is still supplied for it. We confirm parts availability before you authorize, then price the repair against a replacement including the cabinet, ventilation and electrical work a different box would need. Sometimes the repair wins clearly, and sometimes the parts simply no longer exist.
Can a residential refrigerator go where an absorption unit was?
Often yes, and it is a bigger job than it looks. The opening usually needs modifying, the gas line is capped, ventilation changes and the electrical feed has to be sized for continuous running. The honest question is your house bank, because a residential box away from hookups will drain a small one quickly.
How do you test propane pressure and why does it matter?
A manometer connects at the appliance and we read delivery pressure in inches of water column while the appliance is firing, not at rest. That distinction matters because a regulator can hold static pressure and fail under demand, which produces weak flames and lockouts across several appliances at once.
Do you repair the cooking equipment inside a food truck?
We work on the vehicle systems, the LP supply, the electrical and the domestic appliances. What we do not do is certify commercial cooking equipment or a hood system against health department and fire code requirements, which is a separate inspection you have to pass with your own equipment supplier.
Will my policy pay for an appliance that simply stopped working?
No. Carriers pay for sudden accidental damage, not for a component reaching the end of its life. What does get paid is appliance damage from a collision, a fire, a documented surge or water from a covered roof loss, including the cabinet work needed to fit a replacement.
Can appliances be diagnosed without the coach plugged into shore power?
We would rather have every source available, and in the bay we can supply all three: shore simulation at 30 or 50 amp, the coach generator, and its own battery bank. Testing on each in turn is how a supply fault gets separated from an appliance fault in one visit.
How long do parts take for a discontinued RV appliance?
Anywhere from a week to never. Cooling units, older control boards and obsolete furnace assemblies are the usual problems, and availability is confirmed before you authorize rather than after your unit is apart in a bay. Where nothing is supplied, replacement becomes the only honest recommendation.
