The Story Behind a Shop Built Around Vehicles Nobody Else Wanted

How did OCRV Center become an RV specialist?
The shop has done collision and refinish work in Yorba Linda since 2004. Large units kept arriving because nobody else would take them, so the building, the booth and the certifications were rebuilt around coaches, fifth wheels and fleet vehicles instead of around passenger cars. Six departments came out of that shift.

Nobody sets out to become the shop that fixes delaminated sidewalls. What happens is that a fifth wheel arrives because three other places turned it away, you take it, and it teaches you something no car ever would. Do that enough times and the building changes shape around the work.
This is the honest version of how that happened, told as a sequence of decisions rather than as a founding legend. It is worth reading if you are deciding whether to trust the place with a unit you cannot easily replace.
The decision that shaped everything after it
The trade has been collision and refinish work at this address since 2004. The choice that mattered came later and it was not glamorous: stop turning away the vehicles that did not fit. Every shop has a size limit, and every shop discovers it the same way, with a customer standing in the doorway describing something thirty eight feet long. The usual answer is a referral. The other answer is to buy a bigger room.
Choosing the second answer commits you to everything downstream. A booth that takes a coach in one piece costs more to run than one sized for sedans. Anchoring a frame rail under a towable means fixtures a car shop never buys. Once that capital is in the floor, the economics only work if the work keeps coming, which means becoming genuinely good at repairs most shops treat as an occasional nuisance.
What size changed first
Physical capacity came before skill, because without it the skill has nowhere to happen. Bay layout was the first constraint: a unit that has to be shunted twice to reach a bay costs labor hours nobody bills for. Then refinish capacity, because a full repaint on a coach cannot be done in sections without leaving a visible line where one masking edge met the next.
Structural capacity followed. Pulling a bent rail requires anchoring the vehicle so the pull acts on the damage rather than dragging the whole unit sideways, and the fixtures that do that on a fifth wheel frame are not the fixtures that do it on a unibody Sprinter. Both live here now, and knowing which one a vehicle needs is itself a judgement call made at intake rather than in the bay.

The part that took longest
Bodywork transfers. Systems do not. A recreational vehicle carries a propane system, a twelve volt house system, a one hundred and twenty volt shore system, fresh water, waste water and a set of appliances designed to run on any of them. Nothing in automotive training prepares a technician for a Norcold cooling unit, a Suburban water heater, an Onan set that drops load under air conditioning, or a Schwintek rail whose gear teeth have rounded over at the end of travel.
Learning that took years and it took mistakes. The lesson that changed how we work was that replacing a part is not diagnosis. A slide motor swapped onto a room that racks because a rail is worn produces a unit that fails again in one season with a newer motor in it. That is why diagnostic time is billed as its own line at $285 per hour with a one hour minimum, credited against an authorized repair, and why we would rather sell an hour of meter work than an unnecessary part.

Why claims became a department instead of paperwork
The other thing large vehicles brought with them was insurance. A coach loss is rarely small, and the first estimate an owner receives is usually written by a system priced for automobiles against photographs taken from a phone. Watching that happen repeatedly, and watching owners lose real money to it, is how scope writing stopped being an administrative task and became somebody's whole job.
Sixteen direct billing relationships were built one file at a time, which is the only way they get built. What made them work was documentation: measurements at teardown, photographs of what was hidden, and supplements justified line by line rather than argued over the phone. An adjuster who can approve from the paperwork does approve, and that single habit shortened more repairs than any tool purchase ever has.
What has not changed
Three things. The address, which is still 23281 La Palma Ave. The trade, which is still collision, structure and finish with systems work attached. And the rule that work happens where the equipment is: we do not run mobile crews and there is no roadside programme, because a rack under load and a booth mid cure are not portable.
The estimate policy has held too. A written repair estimate is $150 and is credited in full against an authorized repair, which means an owner pays for the document once and only if they walk away with it. That has been an argument with more than one customer over the years and it survives the argument for a simple reason: an estimate that costs nothing is worth nothing, and shops that give them away recover the time somewhere less visible.
What we still turn away
A story about capability is not credible without the boundary. Engine internals go to a chassis specialist. Transmission rebuilds are not this trade. A unit whose frame has been repaired badly by somebody else sometimes gets declined outright, because certifying structure you did not straighten is not a favour to anyone. And a job that only makes sense if three separate assumptions all hold gets written as a diagnostic first rather than as a repair.
Saying no early is a skill the shop learned late. It costs a booking and saves a month. Owners remember the shop that told them the truth at intake far longer than they remember the one that took the deposit and discovered the problem in week three.

- The trade was collision, structure and refinish from the beginning. Recreational and commercial units became the majority of the work over time because the building could take them and most buildings cannot. The skills that transferred were structural and refinish. The ones that had to be learned from scratch were propane, house electrical and slide mechanisms.

- House systems diagnostics. Structural work has published dimensions to measure against and refinish work has a colour you can hold a card up to. - Because damage does not respect trade boundaries. A side impact that crushes a skirt often takes an LP line and a battery bay with it, and a roof that leaked for two seasons ends up as an electrical problem when water reaches a junction. Sending half a repair somewhere else adds weeks and splits accountability, which is worse than learning it.
