A truck camper is the only recreational vehicle on this site with no frame, no axle and no suspension of its own. It sits on a pickup bed floor and absorbs everything the truck absorbs, filtered through four tie down points and whatever the last owner torqued them to. Folding campers solve a different problem the same way: they give up structural continuity so the unit can collapse.

Both choices push the load into joints, and that single fact is what unites this class. It is also why the failure list here looks nothing like a motorhome's. Find your unit in the table and read its page, because a canvas bunk end and a telescoping rigid wall have almost no repair steps in common even though the nav menu puts them side by side.

Nothing here carries its own load path

Ask where the load goes. On a travel trailer it goes into an A frame and two axles. On a truck camper it goes into a bed floor that was designed to hold cargo rather than to be a chassis, and then out through four tie downs into the truck's frame rails. The camper walls end up doing the job a frame would do, which is exactly why the cracks appear in the walls rather than in anything you would call a frame member.

Folding campers make the opposite trade. They keep an axle and a frame and give up continuous walls, so the perimeter where the roof meets the body has to be a moving joint that also keeps rain out. Once you know which trade your unit made, the repair list stops being mysterious. Boxes riding on a truck fail at their attachment points. Units that fold fail at the fold.

Which camper is in your driveway

The word camper covers ten genuinely different products, and two of them get confused constantly. A tent trailer has canvas bunk ends and a roof that lifts on posts. A hard side pop up has rigid walls that telescope and seal on a gasket. They share a nav category, a price bracket and nothing else. Reskinning fabric and rebuilding a guide and gasket system are separate trades.

The table sorts every unit type by floor or box length, dry weight, what actually supports it, and the failure we find first. Weight matters more here than anywhere else on the site, because a truck camper that exceeds the pickup's payload is not just illegal, it is actively destroying its own cabover joint every time the truck crosses a driveway apron.

Wing walls and the four points holding your camper on

The wing walls are the sections of camper wall that drop down alongside the truck bed. They are the most heavily worked part of the unit, because the camper is pinched between the bed floor pushing up and four tie downs pulling down, and the wing wall is the piece that spans that argument. A crack there almost always starts at a corner radius or at a jack mount and runs vertically.

We repair those by opening the skin, replacing or reinforcing the aluminum tube behind it, and rebonding rather than filling. Filler on a filon skin over a cracked tube looks correct for one season and then telegraphs the crack straight back through the paint. While the skin is open we also inspect the tie down backing plates, because a camper that has been overtightened on turnbuckles for years usually has two good corners and two tired ones.

  1. Unload the camper onto stands so the walls are unloaded before measurement
  2. Open the skin at the crack and expose the framing behind it
  3. Replace or reinforce the fatigued tube and restore the bond line
  4. Inspect all four tie down backing plates and jack mounts before closing up

Lift systems: cables, guides and hinges

A pop up roof that lifts unevenly is telling you something specific. On a cable and winch system the usual finding is a frayed or stretched cable on one corner, which then makes the drum wind unevenly and loads the other three. On a hard side unit with telescoping walls the finding is worn guides, and the symptom is a roof that seats fully but no longer compresses the perimeter gasket evenly across the whole run.

Neither is fixed by adjusting the latch. We cycle the roof under load, measure the gap at all four corners at the top and bottom of travel, and replace cables and guides as a matched set. Replacing one cable on a twelve year old unit means one new component pulling against three that have already stretched, and the roof will be out of level again within a season.

Note

Lift cables are a wear item with no service interval printed anywhere. If the roof needs help at one corner, the set is done, and forcing it further is how a roof panel gets bent.

Soft wall and hard wall are separate trades

Fabric work is sewing and pattern work. A bunk end surround is cut from a coated vinyl or a canvas duck, sewn with UV stable thread, and fitted to a frame that has usually distorted slightly over the years, so the pattern has to be taken from the unit rather than off a catalog. Zippers fail before fabric does in this climate, and a zipper replacement is a fraction of a full surround.

Rigid wall work is body work. A telescoping hard side has a gasket race, guide channels and an alignment tolerance, and the repair is measurement, panel and gasket work at the body rate. Owners frequently ask us to seal a hard side pop up with a sealant bead. That will not work, because the joint has to open and close, and any sealant capable of bridging it also prevents the roof from seating.

What camper repairs cost

Camper box work sits in the body department at $210 an hour. Lift systems, canvas, water heaters and twelve volt circuits bill at $260. Materials add $5 per body hour and $55 per paint hour, and a $45 flat hazmat charge applies whenever LP or refrigerant is part of the job, which on a camper it frequently is because the furnace, the fridge and the water heater are all in the same wall.

Two things move a camper estimate more than anything else. The first is whether the framing behind a crack is intact, which we can only answer by opening the skin. The second is jack and tie down condition, because a unit that needs new mounts needs backing structure as well, and that turns a two day job into a week. A written estimate is $150 and comes off an authorized repair in full.

Wind, canyon roads and the storage lot

Campers take a particular kind of damage in this part of Orange County. An extended awning left out during a Santa Ana event is the most common single claim we see on these units, because a tent trailer awning is light, poorly braced and mounted to a lift panel rather than to a wall. The fabric is rarely the whole story: the torsion arm bends and the mounting rail pulls, and both need to be addressed or the replacement fabric tears again.

The other pattern is side contact. The canyon roads feeding Santa Margarita Parkway have narrow shoulders and rock cuts, and a camper sits wider than the truck's mirrors on both sides. Scrapes along the wing wall and the lower sidewall corner are routine, and they matter more than they look, because that is the same panel already carrying the tie down load.

The camper comes off the truck in our bay

Nothing on this page is a mobile service. Every repair happens inside the Yorba Linda building, and there is a practical reason specific to campers: the unit has to be unloaded and set on stands before it can be measured, and it has to stay unloaded while adhesives cure. That cannot happen in a storage lot, and it certainly cannot happen with the camper still on the truck absorbing suspension movement.

Bring the truck when you deliver it. We unload here, keep the camper on stands for the duration, and reload and re-torque the tie downs before you leave. If you cannot leave the truck, tell us at intake and we will arrange the drop differently, but the unload has to happen on our slab either way. A camper worked on while loaded is a camper that cracks again in the same place.

Construction

What this class has in common

Truck campers are self supporting boxes: welded or bolted aluminum tube framed walls, filon or smooth fiberglass skin over block foam, a floor sized to a six and a half foot, eight foot or flatbed deck, and a cabover that overhangs the truck cab with no support beneath it.

Pop up tent trailers use a shallow lower box on a single axle Dexter or AL-KO trailer frame, a lifting roof panel guided by four corner posts, and canvas or vinyl side walls with zippered bunk ends.

Hard side pop ups replace fabric with rigid walls that telescope on guides, so the weather seal becomes a compression gasket around the perimeter instead of a stitched fabric line.

A frame campers fold two rigid panels up to a ridge. The hinge line at that ridge carries every open and close cycle for the life of the unit and it is the first thing we inspect.

Overland and off road campers sit on box tube frames with independent trailing arm suspension from Cruisemaster or Timbren, carry composite or aluminum panel bodies, and hang heavy accessories through those panels.

Attachment hardware is structure on every unit here: Torklift or Happijac tie downs, Rieco-Titan or Happijac jack sets, lift cables, winch drums and hinge assemblies.

Damage

The damage profile we see on this class

Appendix: questions and answers

Is a tent trailer the same thing as a hard side pop up?
No, and the repairs share almost nothing. A tent trailer lifts a roof on posts and seals with canvas or vinyl bunk ends, which is fabric and pattern work. A hard side pop up telescopes rigid walls and seals on a compression gasket, which is measurement, panel and gasket work billed at the body rate instead.
Why is my truck camper cracked just above the bed rail?
That is the wing wall, and it is pinched between the bed floor pushing up and the tie downs pulling down. The crack usually starts at a corner radius or a jack mount and runs vertically. The framing behind the skin is what failed, so the repair opens the skin and reinforces the tube rather than filling the surface.
Can lift cables be replaced one at a time?
We replace them as a set. A single new cable pulls against three that have already stretched, which puts the roof out of level again within a season and loads the corner posts unevenly. We cycle the roof under load first and measure the gap at all four corners at both ends of travel before quoting the work.
Do you need my pickup when the camper comes in?
Yes, for the unload and the reload. The camper has to sit on stands to be measured and to let adhesives cure without suspension movement passing through it. We unload on our slab, keep it unloaded for the duration, then reload and re-torque the tie downs before you take it home.
My jack mount tore out of the corner. Is that repairable?
Almost always, but it needs backing structure rather than longer fasteners. A torn mount means the aluminum tube behind it fatigued, so we replace that section, add a backing plate that spreads load across two framing members, and inspect the other three corners. One failed mount usually means the set has been carrying uneven load for years.
Does a rooftop tent rack pulling loose damage the vehicle roof?
It can, and the damage is usually already there by the time the rack moves. Fasteners driven into unbacked sheet metal tear a keyhole shape around each hole. We reinforce from inside with plates that reach structure, reseal every penetration properly, and redistribute the load rather than simply retorquing what is there.
