How are RV wall panels and headliners repaired?
Interior panel repair replaces stained or delaminating wallboard and reattaches or renews a headliner, after the water path above it has been corrected. A ceiling that has started to droop between the roof vent and the wall is not a decorating problem. It is a record of water that got in somewhere above it and released the adhesive holding the headliner to the ceiling structure. The sag tells you the leak happened. Where it sags tells you roughly where to start looking, and the tide line around the stain tells you how long it went on.
Interior panels are structural in a way owners rarely expect. The wallboard is part of the bonded sandwich that gives a sidewall its stiffness, not a cosmetic liner hung over the top. That is why we repair panels to batten and trim lines rather than patching mid wall, and why a panel job frequently starts on the roof rather than inside the coach.
Interior panels are part of the wall, not a liner
A laminated sidewall is exterior skin, adhesive, substrate, foam, frame and interior wallboard, all pressed into one unit. The board on the inside is doing structural work. It resists racking, it holds the foam in compression, and it is bonded rather than hung. Treating it as a decorative liner leads to repairs that look acceptable and leave the wall softer than it was.
That is why we terminate panel repairs at battens and trim lines. A joint at an existing termination is a place the wall already expects to end. A joint in the middle of an elevation is a new discontinuity in a bonded assembly, and it will telegraph through the finish as the coach flexes, usually within the first few thousand miles.
Two kinds of ceiling, two entirely different repairs
Stick built trailers generally use a staple up ceiling: fabric or vinyl material stretched across wooden ceiling bows and stapled at each one. When it fails, the material pulls off the bows and hangs in scallops between them. The repair is to strip it entirely and re tension new material from the centre outward, because any patch changes the tension locally and leaves a visible ridge.
Laminated coaches use a glue down or heat bonded ceiling where the covering is adhered directly to a flat ceiling panel. Failure there is adhesive release over an area with a defined edge, usually with a tide line at the boundary. That can often be rebonded with a high temperature product, provided the panel behind it is still firm and the water source has been corrected.

Battens, corner molding and the insert trim that comes off first
Every panel joint in a coach is covered by something. A batten strip screwed across the seam, a corner molding at the wall to ceiling junction, and an insert trim that snaps into a channel to hide the screws. The insert is the first thing off and the last thing back, and it is also the piece most likely to be damaged by an impatient screwdriver.
Profiles vary by manufacturer and by model year, and older ones get discontinued. So we lift trim carefully with the right tool, label every piece to its position, and store it flat. It is a small discipline that avoids the very annoying situation of finishing a beautiful panel repair and then being unable to close the joint because a discontinued insert cracked coming out.
Matching a wallboard print that no longer exists
Interior wallboard is a printed vinyl laminate, and manufacturers change patterns constantly. On anything more than a few years old, the original print is usually unavailable, and even where a similar pattern exists the coach has aged in sunlight and the surrounding panels have shifted tone. A patch in a slightly different print reads as a repair from across the room.
The honest options are to reskin a full elevation from batten to batten, to reskin the whole room, or to accept a visible difference. We lay those out with prices attached and let the owner choose. What we will not do is install a mismatched patch and describe it as a match, because the owner discovers the truth the first sunny afternoon.
Camper vans, condensation and panels that were never wet from outside
Van conversions produce a different version of this problem. A small sealed volume, two people breathing, cooking and occasionally showering, and metal walls that go cold overnight. The moisture condenses behind panels rather than arriving through a leak, and the result is staining and mould on the back of a panel with a completely sound roof above it.
The repair there includes ventilation, not just panel replacement. Adjusting a fan strategy, adding a vent, checking that insulation is not creating a cold bridge. Replacing the panel without changing the conditions that soaked it produces the same result on roughly the same timescale, and owners are understandably unhappy about paying twice.
What lives behind a ceiling panel and why it slows the job
Opening a coach ceiling exposes a surprising amount of infrastructure. Air conditioner ducting runs the length of most laminated ceilings, feeding registers along a central plenum. Twelve volt wiring for every dome light and fan crosses it. On some coaches a roof frame member or a rafter sits exactly where you would prefer to make a cut, and none of it is documented anywhere the owner can consult.
That is why ceiling panel work carries more hours than the same square footage on a wall. Ducting has to be supported and reconnected properly or the coach loses airflow at the far register, and wiring has to be labelled before anything is disturbed. Screw heads telegraphing through a finished ceiling are usually the result of somebody reassembling in a hurry and driving fasteners into a duct flange rather than into structure.
Why panel work usually starts on the roof
Water travels. It enters at a vent flange or a lap seam, runs along the top of a ceiling panel, and drops wherever it finds a gap. So the sag inside is often several feet from the actual entry point, and repairing the visible damage without finding the entry is guaranteed rework.
We check sealant at every roof penetration, the condition of the Dicor lap along the seams, and the bedding at any window above the affected area. That exterior work is quoted separately because it belongs to a different scope, but it is not optional if you want the interior repair to last. An owner who declines it is told plainly what that decision means.
Before you proceed
Do not schedule interior panel work before the roof has been inspected. Finishing a ceiling under an unsealed vent flange is money spent on something the next rainstorm will undo.

How the work runs
Trace the water before touching the panel
1 to 3 hours
We start on the roof or at the window, not at the sag. Sealant condition at every penetration, lap seam integrity and window flange bedding all get checked, because a panel replaced under an unresolved leak fails again on the next storm.
Strip trim and open the affected area
1 to 4 hours
Insert trim lifts out of its channel, corner molding unscrews, and the panel edge becomes accessible. Everything gets labelled. RV trim profiles vary by model year and mixing pieces up creates gaps that cannot be closed.
Dry and assess the structure behind
1 to 6 hours
With the panel off or lifted, insulation and framing are checked and dried to a measured target. If the sandwich itself has taken water, the job changes character and the owner is told before anything is reinstalled.
Rebond, reskin or replace
2 to 12 hours
Glue down ceilings are rebonded with a high temperature product, staple up ceilings get new material tensioned from the centre outward, and wall panels are replaced to the nearest batten so the seam lands where a seam belongs.
Reinstate trim and finish
1 to 5 hours
Battens, corner molding and screw covers go back in their original positions, edges are sealed where they meet a wet area, and the work is inspected in raking light because that is the lighting that finds a ripple.

- A 50 percent deposit is taken at authorization on any job over $2,000, with an additional 25 percent when parts arrive on any job over $10,000. Final balance is due at pickup.
- Rebonding a small released area of ceiling on a sound structure sits at the bottom of this range.
- Reskinning a full elevation plus a bedroom ceiling after a roof seam leak sits at the top.
- Roof or window resealing to stop the source is quoted separately and is not included in these hours.
How estimating is billed
- Written repair estimate: $150, credited in full against an authorized repair.
- In depth diagnostic, scan and programming: $285 per hour, one hour minimum, credited in full against an authorized repair.
- In shop pre purchase inspection: $400 to $1,200 depending on unit size and systems count.
- Insurance walk ins are accepted during posted hours. All inspection and estimating work is performed in shop at the Yorba Linda facility.

Why it happened
- Roof penetration sealant failure at a vent, fan, antenna or air conditioner, which puts water into the ceiling cavity directly above the sag
- Window flange leaks that run down inside the wall and release the wallboard laminate from the bottom up
- Roof seam separation along a Dicor lap line, which lets water travel a long way laterally before it shows up inside
- Condensation in a poorly ventilated coach, particularly in camper vans where a lot of moisture is produced in a small sealed volume
- Adhesive fatigue in glue down ceilings, where heat cycling over many summers weakens the bond even without a leak
- Fastener overdriving during original assembly, which crushes the panel locally and eventually telegraphs a line of screw heads through the finish

What not to try yourself
- Screwing a batten through a sagging headliner to hold it up. It stops the droop and does nothing about the wet insulation above it, which keeps working on the structure you cannot see.
- Using household spray adhesive on a ceiling. Interior temperatures in a closed coach in Orange County summer will release it, and the headliner drops again with a fresh layer of glue on it.
- Painting over a water stain on wallboard. The tannin ghosts through, and more importantly the stain was the only visible evidence of where to look for the leak.
- Prying insert trim out with a screwdriver. The channel deforms, the trim will not reseat, and replacement profiles for older model years are frequently discontinued.

I always start on the roof. Nine times out of ten the sag inside is two or three feet away from where the water actually came in, because it runs along the top of a ceiling panel until it finds somewhere to drop. If I fix the ceiling and not the seam, that owner is back next winter with the same sag and less patience. So the first hour of a ceiling job is usually spent on a ladder with a putty knife checking sealant, not inside with a glue gun.
Appendix: questions and answers
- What causes an RV ceiling to start sagging?
- Water above it, in nearly every case. It enters at a vent, fan, antenna or lap seam, runs along the top of the ceiling panel, and releases the adhesive holding the covering. The sag is where it finally dropped, which is often several feet from where it actually got in.
- How do I know if my ceiling is staple up or glue down?
- Press up between the roof vents. A staple up ceiling flexes between wooden bows and you can usually feel the bow spacing. A glue down ceiling feels uniformly firm because the covering is bonded to a flat panel. The two fail differently and the repairs share almost nothing.
- Can you match my existing wallboard pattern?
- Rarely on anything more than a few years old. Manufacturers change printed vinyl patterns constantly and the surrounding panels have aged in sunlight regardless. We usually recommend reskinning a full elevation between battens so the result is deliberate rather than a patch that announces itself.
- The interior wall panel dents under my thumb. Is that just the panel?
- No, that is a warning about the whole wall. A bonded sidewall with a soft interior board has taken water through its thickness. We stop the interior work and assess the wall from the outside, because replacing the inner board over a compromised sandwich hides a structural problem.
- Can I re-glue a drooping headliner with spray adhesive myself?
- It will not hold. A closed coach in Orange County summer reaches temperatures that release household spray adhesive, so the headliner drops again with fresh glue on it, which makes the eventual proper repair messier. Ceiling work needs a high temperature product and a dry cavity behind it.
- My van has mould behind the panels but no leak. What is happening?
- Condensation. A small sealed volume with cooking, breathing and showering produces a lot of moisture, and it condenses on cold metal behind the panels. The repair has to include a ventilation change, otherwise the new panel reaches the same condition on roughly the same timescale.
