A platform body has nowhere to hide. There are no walls, no roof and no panels covering the structure, so every load the truck has ever carried has left evidence you can see from the ground. Sight down the deck edge of a ten year old flatbed and you can usually tell whether it has spent its life carrying pallets, pipe or a forklift.
That visibility is useful because it means diagnosis on these trucks is mostly measurement rather than teardown. What it does not mean is that the repairs are simple. A deck that sags an inch at the middle has bent crossmembers, and getting those right is welding and fabrication work with real preparation behind it.

A flatbed truck is a platform body on its own chassis, anything from an F-550 up to a Freightliner M2 106. A flatbed semi trailer pulled behind a tractor is trailer work. A body that hinges at the rear and tips is a dump truck, and its failures live in the hoist and the subframe rather than in the deck.
What a platform body actually consists of
Strip the wood off a flatbed and there is remarkably little there: two long sills running the length of the body, a row of crossmembers between them, a rub rail down each edge with pockets welded to it, and a headboard at the front. That is the entire structure. Everything the truck does is carried by those members and the U-bolts clamping them to the frame.
Because there is so little of it, each piece matters more. A crossmember bent an inch is not a cosmetic issue, it is a fifth of the deck support in that region gone. This is also why we can diagnose these bodies quickly and why our estimates on them tend to be firmer than on an enclosed body where damage hides behind panels.

Forklifts and the sag at the middle of the deck
Deck ratings assume distributed load. A forklift driving onto the bed does the opposite: it concentrates several thousand pounds onto two small contact patches, usually right in the middle of an unsupported span, and it does it while turning. Three or four crossmembers bend in a single afternoon and nobody hears anything.
You find it later by sighting along the deck edge, or by noticing that the boards flex underfoot in one area. We measure member by member with a straight edge and a laser line, mark which ones moved, then decide between straightening and replacement. A member that has yielded once will yield again in the same place, so on anything past a slight bend we cut it out.

The headboard takes every panic stop
The headboard is not decoration and it is not a windbreak. It is the load stop, and on a truck hauling pipe, lumber or drums it is the only thing between the cargo and the cab. Every forward strap terminates on it and every hard brake application puts the load into it. The weld between the uprights and the long sill is where all of that concentrates.
We see two versions of failure: a fatigue crack that has been growing quietly, and a bent headboard from an actual load strike. The first gets stopped, welded and gusseted. The second usually means checking the sills as well, because a load with enough energy to bend the bulkhead has already told the rest of the body about it.
Stake pockets, rub rails and chain binders
A binder tightened by hand can generate several thousand pounds of tension, and it applies that force to a pocket welded onto the rub rail rather than to the sill underneath. The pocket deforms, tears at the weld and takes rub rail material with it. On a truck in daily service we routinely find pockets that have already been rewelded twice by somebody with a stick welder and good intentions.
Doing it properly means removing the failed pocket entirely, restoring the rub rail section, and welding in a new pocket tied through to the sill where the body design allows. It costs more than a bead around the old one and it is the difference between a repair and a habit.
Before you proceed
A torn stake pocket is a cargo securement failure waiting to happen. If a pocket has been rewelded more than once, the surrounding rub rail material is usually finished and needs replacing rather than reinforcing.
Apitong, treadplate and where each one fails
Hardwood decking, usually apitong, is the traditional choice and it wears well under abuse. It fails at the contact line with the steel members, where water wicks in and stays. The board looks fine from above and is soft underneath around each bolt, and as the bolts rust and swell they split the wood along the grain. That is why deck rot shows up as a row of cracks rather than a soft spot.
Aluminum treadplate solves the rot and introduces galvanic corrosion instead. An aluminum deck laid directly onto steel crossmembers with no isolation strip will corrode along every contact line, and the aluminum is the material that loses. When we replace an aluminum deck we install isolation tape or a coating at the interface, which costs almost nothing and doubles the life of the surface.
Liftgates hanging off a sill that was not asked to carry them
The rear sill on a platform body exists to close out the deck. Bolt a Tommy Gate or a Maxon unit to it and it now carries a cantilevered load lifting up to a thousand pounds several times a day, with a rotating moment at each mounting plate corner. Cracks appear at those corners and at the sill to long member joint.
Slop in the gate pivots accelerates all of it, so we inspect the gate hardware while the sill is exposed. Reinforcing a sill under a gate with worn pivots means doing the job again, and gate removal and refit is a real block of hours that belongs on the estimate rather than as a surprise.
Rates, hot work rules and scheduling
Fabrication and structural welding bill at the posted body rate of $210 per hour, and a written estimate is $150 credited in full against an authorized repair. Deposits start at fifty percent above $2,000, which most crossmember and headboard jobs pass. Where a deck has to come off entirely, we quote board removal and refit as its own line so the structural hours are legible.
One rule we do not bend: no arc is struck on a body still carrying fuel, oil or chemical residue. Service and landscape trucks arrive with plenty of both and the deck gets cleaned before any hot work, with a fire watch during. All of it happens in the building at Yorba Linda. This is not a mobile service and nobody welds on a truck in your yard.

Deck sagging at midspan from bent crossmembers
Crossmembers are sized for load spread across the deck, not for a forklift putting six thousand pounds through two small contact patches in the middle of an unsupported span. One careless loading bends three or four members at once. The wood then loses contact with them, the deck flexes underfoot, and the fasteners begin working their holes oversize.

Every strap and chain run forward terminates at the headboard, and every panic stop sends the load into it. The welded joint between upright and sill is the stress riser in that load path, and it accumulates cycles nobody counts. Cracks there are common on trucks hauling pipe or lumber, where the load bears directly on the bulkhead.

A chain binder can develop several thousand pounds of tension by hand, and it applies that to a stake pocket welded to the rub rail rather than to the sill beneath it. The pocket deforms, then tears, and the rub rail crushes inward around it. On older bodies we find pockets that have been welded back three times already.

Hardwood deck boards sit directly on steel members, and water wicks into that contact line and stays there. The board looks sound from above and is punky underneath, exactly where the bolts pass through. Rusting bolts swell and split the wood along the grain, which is why deck rot usually presents as a line of cracks rather than a soft patch.

Will it fit in the shop?
Platform bodies come apart in a way enclosed bodies do not, and we use that. The body can come off the chassis onto stands so crossmembers, the underside of the sills and the mounting brackets are all reachable from below without working overhead. A 32 foot truck with a liftgate fits the bay comfortably and the booth takes it whole for refinish. Hot work happens in the fabrication area with a fire watch, and no arc is struck on a body still carrying oil, fuel or chemical residue: it gets cleaned first, every time.
Insurance considerations for this vehicle
- Overload damage is excluded on every commercial policy we deal with, and a sagging deck is the textbook example. If a forklift belonging to someone else bent your crossmembers on their site, that is a liability claim against them and it needs photographs taken the same day, not a physical damage claim on your own policy.
- Deck rot and repeatedly rewelded stake pockets are maintenance findings. We quote them plainly as customer pay, because attaching them to a collision claim is how the whole file gets scrutinized.
- Liftgates are often listed as separate equipment. Before we reinforce a rear sill, confirm whether the gate itself is covered, since removing and refitting it is a real block of hours either way.
Appendix: questions and answers
- Why does the middle of my flatbed deck sag and flex?
- Bent crossmembers, almost always from a point load. Deck ratings assume weight spread across the body, and a forklift concentrates thousands of pounds onto two contact patches mid span. Three or four members can bend in one loading. We measure each member against the sills and replace anything that has yielded rather than straightening it twice.
- Is a cracked headboard on a stake bed worth repairing?
- Yes, and promptly. The headboard is the load stop between your cargo and the cab, and cracks concentrate at the weld between the uprights and the long sill. We stop the crack, weld it and add gussets sized to the section. A headboard bent by an actual load strike also means checking the sills for damage.
- Can a torn stake pocket just be welded back on?
- Once, maybe. Binders apply thousands of pounds to a pocket welded to the rub rail, and by the second or third repair the surrounding rail material is finished. Proper repair removes the pocket, restores the rail section and ties the new pocket through to the sill where the body design allows. That stops it being an annual event.
- How do I tell if an apitong deck needs replacing?
- Look for a line of cracks following the bolt row rather than a soft patch. Water wicks into the contact line between board and steel member and stays, so the wood goes punky underneath while looking fine on top. Rusting bolts then swell and split the grain. Probe under the board at a bolt to confirm.
- Why is my aluminum deck corroding along every crossmember?
- Because it sits directly on steel with no isolation. Dissimilar metals in contact with moisture corrode at the interface and the aluminum is the material that gives up. When we replace an aluminum deck we install isolation tape or a barrier coating at each contact line. It adds very little cost and roughly doubles the surface life.
- Do you weld on a work truck that has been hauling fuel or oil?
- Not until it is cleaned. Any arc struck near fuel, oil or chemical residue is an unacceptable risk, so the deck and the area under it are cleaned and cleared before hot work begins, with a fire watch throughout. Service and landscape trucks routinely arrive with enough residue to make this a real step rather than a formality.
