A salon build looks like the gentlest use in this family and it is not. Every styling chair is a hydraulic pedestal bolted through the floor, and a client weighing two hundred pounds gets pumped up, spun round and leaned back in it thirty times a week. That is a moment applied to three quarter subfloor at four bolt holes, over and over, in a vehicle that is also being driven between appointments.
Then there is what gets spilled. Bleach, developer, perm solution and acetone all reach the floor at some point, and every one of them is harder on aluminum and on a coating than water is. Combine chemical attack with a drain penetration at the backwash bowl and you have the two factors that decide when this floor gets replaced rather than repaired.
What a salon build puts into a floor
Almost every load in a salon vehicle arrives at the floor. Two chairs on pedestals, a backwash unit with a tilting bowl and a water heater behind it, a product wall, and often a spa chair at the rear. None of it is heavy in isolation. What makes it demanding is that the loads are concentrated at small base plates and applied as moments rather than as steady weight.
Underneath is three quarter plywood over cross members, with a wipe clean covering over the top and a drain penetration through all of it. That construction is entirely adequate for a static installation. It is being asked instead to take thirty reclining clients a week per chair and a chemical environment, which is a different specification.

Chair pedestals and the four holes that carry them
A hydraulic chair base looks robust and it is, on a concrete floor. On plywood it concentrates everything into a small plate, and a reclined client puts that load well off center. Plywood under a rocking moment does not flex and recover, it compresses, so the chair gains a barely noticeable wobble and the wobble then becomes the whole load path.
By the time an owner mentions it the floor around the base has dished perceptibly. We take the covering back, replace the crushed plywood, and put a steel plate under the floor picking up the base bolts so the load spreads across two cross members. Then the covering goes back down as one piece rather than as a patch around a base.
Note
A chair that rocks slightly when a client leans back is not a chair fault. Check the floor around the base before anyone orders a new pedestal.
The backwash drain and chemical attack
The drain under the backwash bowl is the single most exposed point in the vehicle. Everything used in a salon goes down it: developer, bleach, perm solution, colour, and the water that carries them. Alkaline products and solvents both attack coatings, and the cut edge of the drain hole has never had a coating on it at all.
So the damage runs outward from that edge, under the covering, where nobody sees it. We lift the covering well beyond the visible area, cut out what has gone, let in new material and rebuild the penetration with a proper flange and a sealed collar rather than a bead of sealant around a bare edge. Then the drain line gets re-supported so it is not hanging on the fitting.
Mirrors bonded to a panel that moves
A styling station needs a large mirror and the tidiest way to fit one is to bond it flat to the interior panel. The difficulty is that a trailer wall panel is fastened at its edges and free in the middle, so it dishes very slightly as the unit is towed. Glass has essentially no tolerance for that.
Cracks therefore start at a corner, where the adhesive bed is stiffest, and run inward. They almost always appear after a journey rather than during a client's appointment, which is why owners describe them as spontaneous. We stiffen or replace the panel first, then remount the mirror on a bed that allows a little movement and mechanically retain it at the edges.
Fume extraction and the wall behind it
Acrylic and gel work needs air moved out of the vehicle, so an extraction fan goes through a sidewall or a roof panel with a short duct behind it. In practice that hole is often cut near the end of a build, once the interior is already finished, which means the whole seal is made from outside with a single bead.
Once that bead ages there is no second line of defence and the water runs straight down the inside of the wall. We open the interior panel, rebuild the penetration with a proper flange and an inner seal, and check the duct fall so condensate leaves the body instead of collecting in the low point of the run.
A spa chair behind the axle
Pedicure spas end up at the back of a trailer because that is where the floor space is left over after two styling stations and a backwash unit. Full of water with somebody sitting in it, that is four to five hundred pounds, and behind the axle it acts on a lever rather than sitting on the springs.
The frame feels that as a bending load right at the axle plates, and on a trailer frame sized for an evenly distributed interior the cracks turn up at the plate welds. We look there on every salon trailer that comes in, because it is cheap to find early and it is a frame repair once it has run.
In shop repair and the posted rates
None of this is mobile repair work and there is no roadside option attached to it. Cutting and replacing a floor with a drain through it, welding an axle plate and refinishing a trailer side all belong in the building. Salon owners come across from Rancho Santa Margarita on the 241 to the 91, and the unit arrives with the tanks drained and the product taken out.

A hydraulic pedestal transfers everything through a small base plate, and a reclining client puts that load off center. Four fasteners into three quarter plywood take a rocking moment thirty times a week, and plywood does not spring back. It compresses. The chair develops a barely detectable wobble, then the wobble becomes the load path and the dish under the base grows.

Will it fit in the shop?
Salon units are short, light and awkward only in the sense that everything inside is fastened to what we need to reach. A 28 foot trailer fits any bay and paints whole. Trailers sit on stands under the frame rails with the tongue supported, because we frequently need the axle plates accessible. Chairs, the backwash bowl and the product wall come out for floor work, and we bag and label the plumbing connections so the bowl goes back at the same height and rake it left at.
Insurance considerations for this vehicle
- Chemical damage to a floor is wear, and no carrier treats it otherwise. A spill event that also damaged the vehicle in one incident is arguable, and the argument needs dated photographs taken before anything is cleaned.
- Mirrors that cracked in transit are worth reporting even though the glass is inexpensive, because the panel behind them usually needs attention and that is the part with hours in it.
- A cracked axle plate discovered during other work has to be separated from the loss in writing. It develops over years from weight behind the axle, and mixing it into a collision scope is a reliable way to have a supplement rejected.

- Why has the floor dished around my styling chair base?
- Plywood compresses under a rocking moment rather than flexing and recovering. A reclining client loads a small base plate off center thirty times a week, so the ply around the four fasteners crushes. We replace the crushed material and fit a steel plate under the floor picking up the base bolts across two cross members.
- Can salon chemicals really damage an aluminum floor?

Cracks start at a corner where the adhesive bed is stiffest. We stiffen or replace the panel before remounting any glass.
- Water runs down inside the wall by my extraction fan. What failed?
- The single exterior bead that is usually the whole seal on a fan opening cut late in a build. There is no inner flange behind it, so once the bead ages the water goes straight into the cavity. We open the interior panel, rebuild the penetration with a flange and an inner seal, and check the duct fall.
- Is a pedicure spa at the back of a trailer a structural problem?
- It can become one. Full of water with an occupant it is four to five hundred pounds acting on a lever behind the axle, and the frame feels that as bending right at the axle plates. We check the plate welds on every salon trailer, because finding a crack early is inexpensive and finding it late is a frame repair.
- Do the chairs and backwash bowl come out for floor work?
- Yes, along with the product wall if it sits on the affected floor. We bag and label the plumbing connections so the bowl returns at the same height and rake it left at, and we photograph the layout before anything moves. Putting a salon back exactly as it worked matters more than saving an hour on removal.
