Generators do not usually die from work. They die from sitting. A set that ran two hundred hours a year for a decade is generally in better condition than one with forty hours on the meter that has spent nine months at a time parked in a storage row with old fuel in the bowl and no oil circulation anywhere. That single fact explains most of what arrives at this door in April, when owners find out what their generator did all winter.
There are three paths from here, and the table sorts them. Service, repair, or replacement of the whole set. The most useful information you can bring is the hour meter reading and the last date anything was done, because a set with an unknown history is diagnosed differently from one with records.

Schedule of work
Three questions, in this order
Every generator that arrives here gets asked the same three questions and the answers route the job. Does it start and keep running. Does it produce and hold voltage with load applied. Is the set worth spending money on given its hours and its condition. Owners tend to arrive focused on the first question because a set that will not start is the obvious symptom, but the second question is where the money is, and the third is the one that decides whether a repair is a good decision or an expensive delay.
The reason those three are separable is that an RV generator is really two machines bolted together: an engine and an alternator, with a governor and a control board mediating between them. The engine can be perfect while the alternator makes nothing. The alternator can be healthy while the engine cannot hold speed under load, which looks like an electrical fault from inside the coach because the lights flare and appliance boards reset. Load testing is what separates the two, and it takes about thirty minutes.

Service, which is most of what a generator actually needs
The cheapest generator work is the work that happens on schedule. Oil and filter on the hour interval, plugs and air filter, fuel filter, valve lash on the sets that specify it, and an inspection of mounts, belts, coolant and the exhaust joints. On a set that gets exercised regularly this is nearly the entire relationship you will have with it. On a set that sits, service also becomes recovery work: draining stale fuel, cleaning a varnished bowl and jets, and getting oil circulating in an engine that has been dry for nine months.
When the set needs more than a service
This is the path for a generator that runs and makes no power, hunts continuously, produces voltage high enough to damage appliance boards, or knocks under load with blue smoke on start up. The work splits between the alternator end and the engine end, and they are genuinely different jobs with different parts and different economics. An alternator repair on a sound engine is usually worth doing. An engine overhaul on a set with very high hours is a decision that should be made next to the price of a replacement, which is why we quote both.
Fitting a set that was never there
Adding onboard power to a trailer, a fifth wheel, a conversion or a mobile business unit is mostly not a mechanical job. It is a compartment, a fuel supply, an exhaust route and a transfer switch, in that order. The set itself bolts down in an afternoon. Building a compartment that vents and drains properly, running fuel from a tank that was never plumbed for it, routing exhaust so it exits away from every window and vent, and wiring the transfer so the coach cannot backfeed is where the days go. It is also why the same model set costs very different amounts to install on two different units.
Why sitting kills a generator faster than running it
Gasoline goes off. In a warm storage row it separates and gums a carburetor bowl in months, and the residue does not dissolve when you add fresh fuel on top of it. Meanwhile every internal surface in the engine has drained down, so the first start after a long layup runs metal on metal for a few seconds. Exhaust joints relax, mounts take a set, and rodents find a compartment that is warm, dry and undisturbed. None of that is a manufacturing problem and all of it is preventable with one habit.
The habit is a monthly run of about two hours at roughly half the set rating, which is enough to get everything up to temperature and put real current through the alternator. Running a set at no load for ten minutes achieves close to nothing and can glaze cylinders on a diesel. The owners who arrive here with a set that will not start in April are almost always the ones who exercised it briefly with no load, or not at all.

Bring the hour meter reading when you book. It is the single most useful number on the whole unit and it changes what we quote.
Exhaust, compartments and the part we will not compromise on
A generator makes carbon monoxide a few feet from where people sleep, and every part of the installation exists to keep that separated from the living space. We check exhaust routing and joints, the position of the outlet relative to every window, door, vent and slide seal, and the condition of the compartment seals that stop fumes coming through the floor. Black soot around an outlet, or an exhaust note audible inside the coach, is a finding we act on before anything else on the order.
Compartments matter for a second reason. Air cooled sets breathe through them, and an intake blocked by insulation, rodent nesting or an owner's storage will make a healthy engine behave like a failing one. A set that has been weeping oil or fuel has usually damaged the tray it sits in and sometimes the floor under it, which is body and structural work quoted separately from the mechanical repair.
Before you proceed
If you can smell exhaust inside the coach with the set running, stop using it. That is not a comfort complaint, and it is the one generator symptom we treat as urgent.
What moves a generator number
Generator work bills at $260 per hour from the mechanical and electrical department, with a $45 flat hazmat and disposal charge where fuel, oil or coolant is handled. Parts carry standard markup, sales tax applies to parts and materials and labor is not taxed. A written estimate is $150, credited in full against an authorized repair, and on a keep or replace decision that document is the cheapest part of the process.
Access is the cost driver, exactly as it is everywhere else in this building. A set in a slide out tray with clear service points is straightforward. The same set buried in a compartment behind a bay wall, with the exhaust routed under a skirt and the fuel line run through a chassis member, can take a full day just to reach and remove. Diesel sets carry higher parts costs than gasoline ones, and liquid cooled installations add coolant, hoses and a radiator path that air cooled sets simply do not have.

Generator jobs over $2,000 take a 50 percent deposit at authorization. Complete replacement sets are special ordered on full payment because they are not returnable once allocated.
Generators and claims, which mostly do not overlap
It is worth being direct about this: a generator that failed on its own is not an insurance matter. Carriers pay for sudden accidental damage, and a set that has been sitting with stale fuel for two years does not qualify however inconvenient the timing is. The claims we do see on this category are collision damage to a generator compartment, fire that started elsewhere and reached the set, water intrusion from a covered roof loss, and theft out of the compartment, which happens more than owners expect on units stored away from home.
Where a generator is inside a larger claim, the important detail is that its damage is often invisible until the set is unbolted and slid out. We document that at teardown and file it as a supplement while the claim is open, because a generator discovered damaged after a repair has closed is a much harder conversation with an adjuster.
On the claim
Age and missed service are not covered losses. Where an accident damaged a set that was already tired, the collision damage is scoped separately from the pre existing condition.
Fleets, mobile business units and everything else with a set
Coaches and toy haulers are the bulk of this work, and the rest is commercial: reefer units where the set is keeping product cold, food trucks where it is the entire business, command and emergency vehicles where it has to start on demand after months of standing, and utility bodies with power take off equipment. Fleet sets get scheduled together and rotated through so an operator loses one unit at a time. On emergency vehicles we load bank rather than test run, because a set that starts is not the same as a set that will carry the equipment.

- Hour meter, records and fault history review
- Where the set logs faults we read them out. The pattern of past shutdowns tells you more about a generator than a single failure does, and it decides whether service or teardown is the right first step.
- Stepped load bank test with readings recorded
- Voltage and frequency held while load is applied in stages up to the set rating. A generator that behaves at idle and sags at the second step is a different repair from one that never makes power at all.
- Fuel path inspection back to the tank
- Pickup, lines, filter, pump and carburetor or injection. On coaches, generator fuel is drawn from the chassis tank above a reserve level, which is why a set can quit on a quarter tank.
- Exhaust and compartment safety check
- Exhaust routing, joints, mounting and the position of the outlet relative to windows and vents. Any repair that leaves exhaust entering the living space is not finished, whatever the output reads.
- Cooling and airflow verification
- Air cooled sets choke on a blocked compartment intake and liquid cooled sets fail on coolant and belt condition. Both get checked before an engine complaint gets blamed on the engine.
- Compartment repair where fluids have done damagewhere applicable
- A set that has been leaking oil or fuel has usually damaged the tray and sometimes the floor beneath it, and that gets quoted separately from the mechanical work.

Read the meter and the history

Hours, last service, stored fault codes and how the unit is used. A rental coach at four hundred hours a year and a private fifth wheel at fifteen are on completely different maintenance clocks and get scoped differently.
Start, run and load
1 to 2 hours
The set is started cold, run to temperature and then loaded in steps on the bank while voltage and frequency are watched. Nearly every generator complaint separates into fuel, governor or alternator during this half hour.
Scope against the keep or replace decision
1 hour
On a high hour set we price the repair and the replacement side by side, including compartment and exhaust work. Owners deserve to see both numbers before authorizing a partial rebuild on an engine near the end of its life.
Service, repair or fit
3 to 30 hours
Filters, plugs, oil and valve lash on a service. Alternator, governor, fuel system or engine internals on a repair. On an installation, mounting, fuel supply, exhaust routing and transfer switch wiring all happen in the same visit.
Load bank again and check the exhaust
1 to 2 hours
Whatever the job was, the set finishes on the bank at full rated load with readings recorded, plus an exhaust check with the coach closed up. That last test is the one that catches a joint that was fine cold.

- Parts at $100 or less carry 100 percent markup. Parts over $100 carry 35 percent. Special order parts require a full non refundable deposit at order.
- Sales tax of 7.75 percent applies to parts and materials. Labor is not taxed.
- A 50 percent deposit is taken at authorization on any job over $2,000, with an additional 25 percent when parts arrive on any job over $10,000. Final balance is due at pickup.
- A full service with filters, plugs and valve lash on an accessible set sits at the bottom of this range.
- An alternator and engine overhaul on a set that has to come out of the compartment sits at the top.
- A hazmat and disposal charge of $45 applies where fuel, oil or coolant is handled.
How estimating is billed
- Written repair estimate: $150, credited in full against an authorized repair.
- In depth diagnostic, scan and programming: $285 per hour, one hour minimum, credited in full against an authorized repair.
- In shop pre purchase inspection: $400 to $1,200 depending on unit size and systems count.
- Insurance walk ins are accepted during posted hours. All inspection and estimating work is performed in shop at the Yorba Linda facility.
Turnaround and shop capacity
Typical turnaround is 2 to 15 shop days. A service is two to three shop days. Diagnosis plus an alternator or fuel system repair runs four to eight. Anything that requires pulling the set out of its compartment, or a full installation with fuel and exhaust routing, occupies a bay for two to three weeks.

How insurance treats this work
- Usually covered
- A generator damaged in a collision, in a fire that started elsewhere, by water intrusion from a covered loss, or stolen out of its compartment is normally paid, including the compartment and wiring damage that came with it.
- Usually not covered
- A set that failed from age, from stale fuel, from a missed service interval or from years of not being run is a maintenance matter and no carrier we bill treats it as a loss. Rebuild costs on a high hour engine are owner expense.
- Where supplements come from
- Low on its own and real inside a larger claim. On a collision that reached a generator compartment, the set often has damage that is only visible once it is unbolted and slid out, which is a supplement rather than part of the first number.

- Which generator page applies if the set starts but nothing works?
- The repair and overhaul row. An engine that runs while no voltage reaches the coach is an alternator, brush, capacitor or control investigation, and it is diagnosed on the load bank rather than by ear. Service work will not fix it and is worth doing at the same visit anyway.
- How do you load test a generator that seems fine in the driveway?
- We connect a stepped resistive bank and hold the set at increasing load up to its rating while watching voltage and frequency. Most sets that pass a casual test sag at the second step, which is the same load your second air conditioner represents and the reason it trips at a campground.
- Is it worth overhauling a set with high hours or fitting a new one?
- We quote both side by side before you decide. An alternator repair on a sound engine usually makes sense. A full engine overhaul on a very high hour set often costs a large fraction of a replacement, and the replacement resets the clock on everything including the control board.
- Do you service generators on box trucks, reefers and command units?
- Yes, on the same posted rate. Reefer and command sets get load banked rather than test run, because a unit that starts is not necessarily a unit that will carry equipment. Fleet sets are scheduled together and rotated through so an operator is short one vehicle rather than several.
- How much fuel and how many hours does a load test actually use?
- Typically one to two hours of run time across a full diagnosis, including a cold start, a warm up and a stepped load run. Fuel comes from your tank, so arrive with at least a quarter tank. On coaches the generator pickup sits above a reserve and will quit before the chassis does.
- Does my policy pay for a generator that failed on its own?
- No. A set that failed from age, stale fuel or a missed service interval is maintenance, and every carrier we bill treats it that way. What does get paid is collision damage to the compartment, fire from elsewhere reaching the set, water from a covered roof loss, and theft out of the bay.
- Can you diagnose a generator while it is still bolted in the compartment?
- Usually yes. Starting, running, load banking, fuel pressure and exhaust checks are all done in place. What requires removal is internal engine work, alternator teardown on cramped installations and any compartment repair, and we tell you at estimate whether removal is in the scope.
- What has to be true before you will run a set inside the building?
- Exhaust extraction connected at the outlet, a carbon monoxide monitor live in the bay, and joints inspected before the first start. A set with a leaking exhaust does not run indoors until the leak is repaired, which occasionally means the exhaust work is authorized before the diagnosis can finish.
