How is panel dent repair done on an RV rather than a car?

Somebody backed into your coach in a storage lot and now there is a shallow saucer in the sidewall about the size of a dinner plate. You called a paintless dent shop, they came out with a flashlight, looked at the wall, and left. That was not them being difficult. It was them recognizing that the panel they were asked to work on has nothing behind it they can push against.
Automotive paintless work depends on getting a rod behind sheet metal and massaging the low spot back up. An RV sidewall is a pressed sandwich: exterior skin, adhesive, substrate, foam block, aluminum tube frame, interior wallboard. There is no gap. Every technique that starts with the phrase back side access is off the table before the job begins, and pretending otherwise is how a dent becomes a delaminated wall.
Why paintless dent removal stops at an RV sidewall
Paintless work is a leverage trade. A technician reaches behind sheet metal, finds the low point, and walks it back up with a rod while reading the reflection in a light board. Every part of that depends on a void. Car doors have one. Fenders have one. Van cargo areas have one. Laminated RV walls do not, because the whole point of the construction is that skin, foam and frame are pressed into a single stiff unit with no air in between.
So the honest answer for most coach and trailer damage is that the dent gets pulled from the front or it gets faired. Glue pull tabs bonded to the outside of the skin can recover a surprising amount of a shallow dent, and on a healthy bond we use them hard. What they cannot do is restore a crease, and what they must not do is out muscle the adhesive underneath. The judgment call is knowing where that line sits on the specific wall in front of you.

Reading a dent before anyone touches it
The size of a dent tells you almost nothing about the cost of fixing it. What matters is the condition of the bond around the rim, and the only reliable field test for that is your knuckles. Sound laminate returns a tight, high tap. Released laminate sounds like knocking on a hollow door. We grid the area, mark every drummy square with tape, and photograph the whole thing before a single tab goes on.
The second thing we look at is whether the gelcoat cracked. A crease with a hairline in the bottom of it is not a dent anymore, it is a breach, and water has been going through it every time the coach got washed. Those repairs open up rather than pull out. On a unit that has been sitting outdoors through a couple of Santa Ana seasons we usually find the crack has already wicked moisture into the substrate for several inches on either side.
Owners are often surprised that we spend an hour before doing anything. That hour is the difference between a repair that stays flat and a repair that ghosts back out in July. It is also what produces a scope an adjuster will actually approve without a second visit.
Aluminum siding behaves nothing like a composite skin
Plenty of trailers still wear corrugated aluminum over a stick built wood frame, and those panels dent in a completely different vocabulary. Aluminum stretches. Once a rib is flattened out the material that used to be in that curve has to go somewhere, and it goes into the surrounding sheet as a bulge. Heat shrinking, which is a legitimate technique on steel, is not reliable on the alloys used for siding.
Our default on a stretched aluminum panel is to replace the affected sheet between existing seams rather than fight it. That sounds more aggressive than filling it and it is usually cheaper by the time you count the block sanding hours, and it looks correct from an angle, which filled aluminum siding never does. Airstream style riveted shells are their own discipline again, with rivet pattern and shell tension driving the whole approach.
Steel panels on Sprinters, cargo vans and box trucks
Fleet work is where conventional dent technique earns its keep. A Sprinter slider, a cargo van rear door, a box truck cab quarter: these are stamped steel with real access behind them, and a parking lot ding on one of those often leaves the shop with the factory paint untouched. That matters to a fleet manager, because an untouched factory finish means no color match conversation and no cure time before the vehicle goes back on route.
Where it gets more involved is the aluminum bodied delivery vans and the FRP box bodies, which use riveted or bonded panels over a formed frame. Those follow the composite playbook, not the sheet metal one. We sort the vehicle into the right category at check in so nobody is quoting rod work on a body that has no rods in its future.
What actually drives the invoice on a dent
Three things move the number: how far the color has to travel, whether the substrate is involved, and whether the panel has a two tone graphic running through it. A small dent in a solid white lower wall is a modest job. The same dent placed inside a swoosh graphic means matching a mask line, and that turns a body repair into a graphics reproduction task with a very different hour count.
Body and paint labor runs at $210 per hour. Paint supplies are billed at $55 per paint hour and body supplies at $5 per body hour, so a job that is mostly pulling and blocking carries very little material cost while a job that is mostly spraying carries more. Parts, when a molding or a trim insert has to be replaced, carry standard markup, and sales tax applies to parts and materials while labor is untaxed.
On cost
A written estimate is $150 and is credited in full against an authorized repair. On dent work that estimate is worth having in hand before you talk to a carrier, because the tap test result frequently changes what the claim is actually about.
Coatings, gelcoat and the Southern California sun problem
Older coaches came out of the factory in gelcoat rather than paint, and gelcoat chalks. By the time a unit is a decade into Orange County sun, the panel around a dent has drifted several shades lighter than the color the factory sprayed. Matching to the original formula produces a repair that is obviously darker than everything around it, which is the opposite of what anybody wanted.
We handle that by reading the actual panel with a spectrophotometer and building to what is there now, then extending the blend to a molding line or a break so the transition never lands in open wall. On badly oxidized units the more sensible plan is often to correct the surrounding surface first, then match, because chasing a moving target with a spray gun is not a strategy.
Dents, hail claims and what carriers will pay for
One dent from a known event is a straightforward claim. A field of shallow dimples across a roof and upper sidewall is a hail claim and gets handled on a different track, with a mapped damage count rather than a per dent estimate. The two get confused constantly, and an owner who files the wrong one usually ends up with an offer that does not cover the actual scope.
The other place claims go sideways is the tap test finding. If the impact released adhesive, the correct repair is not a dent repair, and a carrier who authorized a dent line item will need a supplement. Documenting the drummy area at first inspection, with photographs and a marked panel, is what keeps that supplement from turning into a three week argument.
On the claim
Photograph the dent before you wash the coach. Rinse water sitting in a gelcoat hairline is one of the clearest pieces of evidence that an impact broke the surface rather than just deformed it.

- Color is blended to a molding line, a seam or a body break so the repair boundary is not sitting in open sidewall.

How the work runs
Identify the wall you actually have

Build sheet, model year and a small inspection at an existing penetration tell us the skin type and the substrate. A 2004 lauan wall and a 2019 Azdel wall respond to pulling very differently, and guessing between them is how shops crack skins.
Map the bond around the damage
0.5 to 1 hour
The area is tap tested in a grid and marked. Sound panel gets a pull. Drummy panel gets flagged and the owner is told before anything is touched, because that finding changes the scope and the price more than the size of the dent does.
Pull in stages
1 to 6 hours
Tabs are set, warmed, and drawn in small increments with the panel checked between each. We stop when the skin stops responding rather than when it looks flat, and the remaining depth is handled with compound instead of force.
Fair, prime and block
1 to 8 hours
Epoxy compound goes on thin, cures, and gets blocked to the surrounding contour with a long board. Long boards find the wave that a hand cannot. Primer follows and is guide coated so nothing hides until the color goes on.
Refinish and reassemble
2 to 8 hours
Color is sprayed to a defined break, cleared, and cut back where the new edge meets old finish. Trim goes back with fresh sealant. On gelcoat units the repair is finished in coating rather than raw gelcoat for a match that holds up.

- A wide low dent in a two tone gelcoat sidewall runs high because the blend has to travel to a break line.
- If tap testing finds released adhesive, this stops being a dent job and gets requoted as delamination work.

What you will notice first
- A soft round depression in the sidewall with the gloss still intact
- A crease across the skin with a hairline crack running along the bottom of it
- A dent that flexes and clicks when you press it with a thumb
- A raised ring or bubble around the edge of an older dent
- Star cracking in the gelcoat radiating out from a single impact point
- Corrugated aluminum siding pushed in between two ribs but not torn
- A door skin on a Sprinter or box truck with a sharp ding above the swage line
- A dent that reappears in warm weather after somebody already pushed it out
How this fails, and what we do about it

Why it happened
- Storage lot maneuvering, which produces most of the shallow low speed damage we see on coaches over 30 feet
- Road debris off the SR-241, where a kicked up rock at freeway speed puts a small deep dimple into a filon skin
- Ladder, awning arm and bike rack contact during loading, which dents the panel at the exact point where a bracket concentrates the load
- Interior cabinet or appliance shifting on the road, which pushes a dent outward from inside a wall rather than inward from the street
- Hail on units stored uncovered, which leaves a field of shallow dimples instead of one impact
- Prior heat and suction attempts by an owner, which stretch the skin and leave a permanent oil can that no longer sits flat

What not to try yourself
- Heating a fiberglass sidewall with a torch or a heat gun to pop a dent out. The resin softens well below the temperature people use, and the panel takes a permanent set you cannot remove.
- Suction cup pullers on a bonded wall. They either do nothing or they lift the skin off the substrate in a ring, and the second outcome costs several times what the dent would have.
- Pushing a sidewall dent outward from inside the coach. There is no air gap to push through, so the force lands on the interior wallboard and the frame instead.
- Filling a dent with polyester body filler laid straight onto gelcoat. It will read as a ghost outline the first hot week and it will lift at the edge before the year is out.

A dent I can pull is a good day. A dent with a halo around it means we are talking about the wall, not the dimple.
Appendix: questions and answers
- Can a paintless dent technician fix a dent in my motorhome wall?
- Not on a laminated sidewall. Paintless work needs a rod behind the panel and a bonded wall has no cavity. The workable version is a front side glue pull followed by fairing and refinish. Steel panels on a van or truck chassis are a different story and often do take rod work.
- What does it mean if the wall sounds hollow around the dent?
- The adhesive holding the skin to the substrate has released. That converts the job from a dent repair into a delamination repair, because pulling on a panel with a failed bond simply enlarges the void. We tap test and mark the area before quoting so the owner is not surprised later.
- Will the repaired area match my faded gelcoat?
- It will if we match to the panel rather than to the factory code. A ten year old coach in Orange County sun has drifted lighter than the original formula. We read the current surface, build to that, and carry the blend to a molding line so the transition is never sitting in open sidewall.
- Why replace aluminum siding instead of filling the dent?
- Aluminum stretches and does not shrink back. Once a corrugated rib is flattened, the extra material shows as a bulge next to the repair no matter how flat the filler is sanded. Swapping the sheet between existing seams reads correctly from every angle and usually takes fewer hours.
- Someone hit my RV in a storage lot and left. Is that worth filing?
- Often yes, under comprehensive rather than collision, depending on your policy. Get photographs before washing, note the storage facility and any camera coverage, and bring a written estimate so the carrier is looking at a real scope. A shallow sidewall dent can still involve blend work across a graphic.
- Can I pop the dent out myself with a heat gun and a plunger?
- Please do not. Fiberglass resin softens at temperatures well below what a heat gun produces, so the panel takes a permanent set. Suction devices either accomplish nothing or peel the skin off the substrate in a ring. Both outcomes cost far more to correct than the original dent.
