The selling point of a modular interior is that it comes out. A fleet can pull a plumbing configuration on Friday, drop in a signal maintenance configuration on Monday, and put the same van on a different contract. That flexibility is real and it is worth the money. It also means every mounting point in the van gets used, unused, reused and used again, and mounting points do not enjoy that.
So the repairs on these vans are rarely about the cabinets. They are about the small pieces of metal that hold the cabinets: a floor track anchor that has begun pulling through the pan, a rail thread at the B pillar that has been stripped by its third reconfiguration, a strip of bare steel behind an aluminum module that has been quietly corroding since the second contract.

A modular upfit van carries a bolt in interior system rather than a fixed built in one: Sortimo, bott, Ranger Design or Modul-System cabinets landing on floor tracks and wall rails. The point is reconfiguration, so the same shell might be a plumbing van this year and a signal maintenance van next year. That reuse is what wears the mounting points, and mounting points are what this page is about.
What counts as a modular van, and what does not
Sortimo, bott, Ranger Design and Modul-System all build the same idea in different metal: modules that land on a floor track or hang from a wall rail, held with captive fasteners and removable in an afternoon. That is a modular van. A van with plywood shelves screwed to the ribs is a fixed upfit, and it is a different repair conversation because the shelving is not going anywhere.
Fleets choose modular for reassignment. The van outlives the contract, the interior gets re-specified, and the same shell serves three trades over eight years. What nobody plans for is that the mounting points age faster than the van does, because they are the only parts being taken apart and put back together repeatedly.

- Freestanding modules strapped to D rings: loads go into the floor plate

Track anchors and the crescent tear in the pan
Look under the plywood in a van that has been reconfigured a few times and you will find the same failure in the same shape. Each track bolt passes through the floor into a thin pan, and the load during a hard stop is shear followed by tension on that single point. The hole ovalizes, the anchor begins to rock, and a small crescent tear opens on the underside of the pan.
Backing plates are the answer and they need to be large enough to matter. We fit plates that span two floor ribs, use flanged hardware, and reseal the underside so the new penetration is not a corrosion start point. Adding a longer bolt in the same hole is the version that comes back.
The third reconfiguration is where rails fail
Rivnuts at the pillars are consumable and nobody treats them that way. The first install torques them correctly. The second install finds the threads a little tired. By the third, an installer under time pressure leans on the wrench, the rivnut spins in its hole and the rail is now held by whatever else is nearby. The module load quietly redistributes to fewer points than the design intended.
Our repair replaces the anchor style, not just the anchor. Where a rivnut has failed we set a weld nut with a spreading plate behind the pillar face, which stops that position from being consumable at all. It takes longer once and never comes back.

The stripe of rust behind every module back
Pull an aluminum module out of a van that has been in service six or seven years and there is often a stripe of corrosion on the wall exactly as tall as the module. Two things caused it: moisture trapped at a hard contact face with nowhere to dry, and dissimilar metals in contact accelerating what the moisture began. It is not a leak, and the shape tells you so immediately.
The prevention is trivial and almost never done at build time: an isolation layer or a standoff at the contact face. We treat and recoat the affected area, then add that layer during reinstall. On a fleet with a dozen identical vans, this is a finding worth acting on across all of them rather than one at a time.
Note
If a modular interior has never been out of a van older than six years, plan on finding contact corrosion behind at least one module. Better to schedule that than to discover it during a lease inspection.
The module map, and why we photograph before we unbolt
Removing an upfit is easy. Putting it back exactly as it was is not, and the difference is documentation. Before anything comes out we photograph each wall from three positions, record which track positions each module occupies, and bag hardware per module rather than in one bucket. Then the modules leave the van in order and get staged in that order on the floor.
This is also how the billing stays honest. Removal and reinstall is access work, not repair work, and it belongs on its own estimate line with the hours each way. An adjuster who can see the module count and the hours approves it. An adjuster looking at a lump sum labeled upfit asks questions nobody can answer.
Handing a van back without paying for holes
Every modular van eventually goes back to a lessor with the mounting holes still in it, and those holes are chargeable at inspection along with any corrosion that started in them. A long wheelbase van with a full rail system and a floor track grid can carry sixty or more penetrations. The lessor will find them all.
Doing this properly means welding or plugging each hole, treating the surrounding metal, and refinishing the affected areas so the interior reads as a cargo van again. It is a genuine job with genuine hours, and fleets that budget for it at lease signing rather than three weeks before turn in are the ones who are not surprised by the number.
What this work costs and how we sequence it
Everything here bills at the body rate of $210 per hour, with body supplies at $5 per body hour, and jobs past $2,000 take a fifty percent deposit at authorization. A written estimate is $150 and credits in full against an authorized repair. Module removal and reinstall is quoted separately from the repair underneath it so the two are legible on their own.
For a fleet, the sensible sequence is to combine work: if the interior has to come out for a body repair, that is also the moment to fix track anchors, treat contact corrosion and replace tired rivnuts. Doing those separately means paying the removal hours three times. All of it happens in shop at Yorba Linda, since this is not a mobile service and a module map is not something anyone should build in a parking lot.

What typically goes wrong on this vehicle
Floor track anchors pulling up through the pan
Track is usually bolted through a plywood floor into a thin steel pan, and the load path is a single fastener in each hole. A module full of fittings restrained by that track during a hard stop applies shear and then tension to the same point. Once the hole deforms, the anchor rocks, and the pan tears in a small crescent that grows every time the module is reseated.

Wall rails land at the pillars because that is where the structure is, and rivnuts in those positions get cycled every time the fleet changes the interior. By the third configuration the threads are marginal, an installer overtightens to compensate, and the rivnut spins in its hole. The module then carries load on fewer points than the drawing intended.

Aluminum modules pressed against painted steel with no isolation layer trap moisture at the contact face, and the dissimilar metals accelerate what the moisture starts. The corrosion runs as a stripe exactly the height of the module back, which is how we tell it apart from a leak. Nobody finds it until the interior comes out.

Module drawers are held by latches designed for road vibration, not for impact. In even a modest collision the drawers open, the contents become projectiles and the drawer slides bend against their stops. Post collision we inspect every latch and slide in the van, because a bent slide in a closed drawer is invisible until the next hard stop.

Modular systems are removable, which means the vehicle eventually goes back with every mounting hole still in it. Lease returns get charged for unrepaired penetrations and for the corrosion that started in them. Will it fit in the shop?
The building matters here for a reason that has nothing to do with vehicle size: a modular interior needs floor space next to the van while it is out. We stage modules in configuration order on the shop floor, tagged and photographed, rather than stacking them in a corner and hoping. A fully fitted long wheelbase van can occupy its bay plus ten feet alongside, and at 35,000 square feet we can give it that without pushing another job out of the building. Reinstall is torqued to the system manufacturer values rather than by feel.
Insurance considerations for this vehicle
- Removal and reinstall of an upfit is a legitimate estimate line and adjusters accept it when it is documented. What they reject is a lump sum with no module count. We list the modules, the rail runs and the hours each way, which turns an argument into an entry.
- Upfit value needs paperwork before it needs a claim. A Sortimo or bott installation can be a third of what the van cost, and an adjuster with no invoice will value it as shelving. Keep the upfitter quote and the configuration drawing with the vehicle file.
- Damage from an unrestrained module during a collision is part of the collision, but wear on latches and slides that was present beforehand is not. We photograph the interior at teardown for exactly that boundary.
Appendix: questions and answers
- Why are the floor track anchors lifting in our upfit van?
- Each track bolt carries shear and then tension on one small point in a thin floor pan, and a loaded module during a hard stop is enough to ovalize the hole. The anchor then rocks and a crescent tear opens underneath. The repair is backing plates spanning two floor ribs, flanged hardware and resealing the underside.
- An installer stripped a rail anchor at the pillar. Can that be fixed?
- Yes, and we change the anchor style rather than replacing like for like. Where access allows we fit a weld nut with a spreading plate behind the pillar face, then restore corrosion coating around it.
