A paratransit van is a factory vehicle that had a large hole cut in the middle of it on purpose. To get a ramp entry and interior standing height, the converter removes the original floor pan and part of the structural cross members, then fabricates a lower pan with new rails and reinforced rockers. The finished van drives like a van and repairs like nothing else on the lot.
That matters the first time one comes in with a rocker scrape from a curb at a passenger stop. On an unconverted van that damage would stop at the rocker skin. Here the rocker is part of a fabricated load path holding a lowered pan, and the deformation keeps going until something inboard absorbs it.

A paratransit van keeps its original van body and gains a mobility conversion: a lowered floor and ramp, or a platform lift in the side or rear opening. A cutaway shuttle replaces the body entirely, which is a different structure and a different repair.
What the conversion actually removed
To get a ramp entry and usable interior height, a converter cuts out the original floor pan and part of the cross members underneath, then fabricates a lower pan with new rails and welds reinforcement into the rockers and pillar bases around the opening. BraunAbility, Vantage Mobility and Rollx all do a version of this, and each publishes its own reinforcement layout.
The consequence is that the factory body repair manual only describes half of the vehicle in front of you. Before we write a scope we identify the converter and the conversion generation, because the rail layout under a 2016 Transit conversion and a 2022 one are not the same. Guessing at that is how a repair ends up strong in the wrong places.

Why a curb scrape is not a rocker job here
Paratransit vans load against curbs all day, so rocker contact is constant and mostly cosmetic. The moment it stops being cosmetic is when the contact was hard enough to dent, because on a converted van the rocker is welded to the reinforcement that holds the lowered pan. Push it in and the load has somewhere to go, inboard, into a rail that was fabricated rather than stamped.
We measure the pan rails and the door opening before deciding anything, using the opposite side as the reference. Straightening a rocker skin on a van whose rail has moved a quarter inch produces a vehicle that looks correct and never quite closes its door the same way again.
Tie down tracks carry people, not cargo
Q'Straint and Sure-Lok securement systems transfer occupant load into floor track, and that track is usually bolted through a fabricated pan with backing plates behind it. When a strap tensions and the track lifts even slightly, the fastener or the plate under it has already failed. We remove track rather than inspect it in place, because the failure is on the underside.
Replacement goes back in full lengths to the original station layout with new backing plates and correct hardware. We do not splice a track across a securement position and we do not move a station to make a repair easier. The layout was designed around wheelchair footprints and turning space, and changing it changes whether the van can carry the passenger it was bought for.
Before you proceed
If a securement strap has ever pulled a track up off the floor even a little, the van should be out of service until the anchorage is opened up. That is not a maintenance item that waits for a scheduled visit.
Ramp and lift structure compared with lift service
There is a clean line between what we do and what a mobility service company does. We repair the structure: the hinge plate and the metal around it, the door opening, the reinforcement, the pan the assembly bolts through, and the refinish afterwards. We also reinstall to the manufacturer's fastener specification and cycle the assembly under load before release.
Hydraulic and control faults, actuator replacement, interlock programming and lift certification all belong to the mobility equipment specialist. On agency vehicles we work alongside whichever provider holds that contract, and we sequence our structural work so their inspection happens after the metal is right rather than before.
Power for a ramp is not a cigarette lighter circuit
Ramp and lift power is a heavy draw on a dedicated feed with its own protection, an interlock tied to the transmission and door state, and a control head the driver uses dozens of times a shift. After a side impact the damage we look for is chafe and pull at the harness where it crosses the reinforcement, not just at the connector.
Diagnostics on that runs at $285 per hour with a one hour minimum, credited against an authorized repair, and it buys a documented reading at each stage of the feed rather than a replaced control head. Once the fault is found, repair labor moves to the mechanical rate of $260 per hour.
Getting the conversion valued properly
The single most expensive mistake on these vehicles is letting a carrier evaluate one as a base van. A conversion can represent a third of the delivered cost of the unit, and none of it appears in a used vehicle guide. When the file arrives without a conversion invoice, the total loss math runs against the operator every time.
We photograph and itemize the conversion at teardown: converter plate, ramp assembly, securement stations, seating positions, floor layout. Providers keeping their own records should hold the original upfit invoice with the title documents rather than in a maintenance folder.
Intake, downtime and getting the van here
Providers running scheduled trips cannot lose a van without a plan, so we book these as fixed date jobs and stage the parts before intake wherever the damage allows it. A rocker and pan repair with refinish is typically six to twelve shop days. Anchorage work alone is often three.
We do not offer mobile repair, and no part of this business is a roadside service. Drivable vans come to the Yorba Linda facility under their own power, and anything that cannot be driven arrives on a tow. From the Rancho Santa Margarita area the 241 to the 91 is the easy run.

What typically goes wrong on this vehicle
Corrosion along the welded seams of a lowered floor pan
The converted pan is the lowest metal on the vehicle and it is joined with long seam welds and sealer rather than a factory pressing. Water that runs off a ramp sits in those seams, and the pan is close enough to the road that it takes spray from every wet morning. Corrosion appears at the seam line rather than in the middle of the panel.

Passenger loading happens against a curb by design, so the rocker takes contact continuously and it is no longer just a rocker. On a converted van it is part of the reinforcement holding the lowered pan, so a curb strike hard enough to dent it usually moved the rail it is welded to as well.

A ramp cycles under wheelchair and attendant weight several times per trip, and a platform lift adds the mass of the platform itself. Both concentrate load at a hinge line bolted to converter structure. Cracks start at the corner of a hinge plate and run into the surrounding metal, usually on the side the driver loads from most.

The ramp opening is a large cut in a unibody side that the converter reinforced to a plan. Once a low speed side impact has moved that reinforcement, the sliding door track and striker no longer share the same geometry, and the door drops enough to catch its own weather seal in the track.

Will it fit in the shop?
These are the smallest units in the fleet category and they fit anywhere in the building, which means the constraint is access rather than space. A converted van goes on a lift so we can see the pan seams, the rail welds and the anchor backing plates from below, which is the only place that damage is honestly visible. Interior removal is heavier than people expect: seating, track covers, wall panels and often the ramp assembly come out to reach a rocker from inside, and we quote that access separately so the hours are legible.
Insurance considerations for this vehicle
- The conversion is worth a large share of the vehicle and it is routinely undervalued in a total loss calculation. A converted van with 90,000 miles can carry twenty five thousand dollars of mobility equipment that a book value never sees, and the paperwork proving the conversion cost belongs in the claim file from the first phone call.
- Curb contact at a passenger stop is a repeat exposure rather than an accident on most paratransit contracts. Providers should expect a carrier to treat the third rocker claim differently from the first, and we document each one as a separate dated event with photographs.
- Restraint anchorage repair is a safety item that gets approved when it is presented as structure and questioned when it is buried in a trim line. We break it out with the backing plate condition photographed.
Appendix: questions and answers
- Is a dented rocker on a lowered floor van a structural repair?
- Usually yes. The conversion welded reinforcement into that rocker to carry the lowered pan, so a dent means the load path has been pushed inboard toward a fabricated rail. We measure the rails and the door opening against the opposite side before deciding, because straightening the skin alone leaves a door that never closes the same way twice.
- A securement strap pulled the floor track up slightly. How serious is that?
- Serious enough to park the van. Track anchorage carries occupant restraint load through backing plates on the underside of a fabricated pan, so a track that lifts means a fastener or plate has already given way. We remove the track to inspect from below and replace in full lengths to the original station layout with new hardware.
- Why do you need to know which company converted the van?
- Because the reinforcement layout is theirs, not the chassis manufacturer's. BraunAbility, Vantage Mobility and Rollx each weld in a different rail and rocker plan, and layouts change between model years. Factory body repair data only describes the half of the vehicle the converter left alone, so we identify the converter before writing a scope.
- Why is the rust on my lowered floor along the weld lines?
- Because the pan is fabricated and joined with long seam welds and sealer rather than pressed as one piece. It is also the lowest metal on the vehicle, so water running off a ramp and spray off the road both settle into the seam. It corrodes at the joint first and in the panel field much later.
- How do I stop a carrier from valuing my van as a base model?
- Put the conversion invoice in the file at first notice. A mobility conversion can be a third of the delivered cost and appears in no used vehicle guide. We itemize and photograph the converter plate, ramp assembly, securement stations and floor layout at teardown so the valuation has documentation to argue with.
- Can you fix a lift that stops halfway through its cycle?
- Not the hydraulics or the controls. That is mobility equipment service work and it belongs to the company holding that contract. We handle the structure it bolts to, the hinge plate and surrounding metal, the door opening and the wiring feed, then reinstall to specification and cycle the assembly under load before the van leaves.
