The word people use for these is wrong about half the time, and the distinction has real money attached to it. A Class B is a motorhome. It left a coach factory with an RVIA seal, a build sheet, a certified LP install and a documented twelve volt system. A camper van conversion left a cargo van dealer and got built out afterward by a shop or an owner.

For a repair that difference decides where the parts come from, whether an insurer treats the unit as an RV or a van, and how much of the interior we can put back the way it was. Everything below is about the factory built version.

Note

A Class B is an RVIA built motorhome produced on a factory van chassis by a coach manufacturer such as Winnebago, Roadtrek, Pleasure-Way or Airstream. An aftermarket build out on a bare cargo van is a camper van conversion, which is a different vehicle with different paperwork, different wiring standards and its own page.

Class B or conversion: why the label matters

A factory Class B carries an RVIA seal near the entry door and a build sheet from the coach manufacturer. The LP install was inspected, the twelve volt system was built to a published standard, and the appliances have model numbers a supplier recognizes. Winnebago, Roadtrek, Pleasure-Way, Airstream and Midwest Automotive all produce units in this category.

A camper van conversion is a bare cargo van built out afterward. It may be excellent work or it may be a mess, but it has no build sheet, its wiring follows whoever did it, and its insurer often classifies it as a van rather than an RV. We repair both, and we scope them differently, which is why they are separate pages here.

Thin steel behaves differently under a hammer

The body sides on these vans are well under a millimeter of galvanized steel spanning several feet with almost no interior support. That construction is why the vehicle is light and why a parking lot dent is a bigger job than the size of the dent suggests. Push it out and the panel oil cans. Fill it and the filler cracks the first hot week.

The manufacturer procedure calls for cutting at a defined seam and welding in new material, then restoring the corrosion protection on both sides of the weld. That is more hours than an owner expects and it is also the only repair that stays flat. We show people the procedure page rather than argue about it.

Note

Galvanized steel loses its coating in the heat affected zone of any weld. Restoring that coating is part of the repair, not an upsell, and it is what keeps rust from coming back at the seam in three years.

The roof cut line is the leak

On any Class B with a bonded fiberglass high top, water almost always enters at the cap flange, and almost always at a front corner. The van roof is a stamped structural panel. The cap is a molded part. They were joined with adhesive and sealant at a factory, and every mile of twisting on a driveway apron works that joint slightly.

Finding it takes a controlled water test with the interior headliner down, not a hose and a hopeful look. We run water in stages from the rear forward and watch the exposed flange from inside. Sealing the outside without confirming the path just moves the entry point six inches and buys a season.

House electrical in a very small compartment

The current generation of Class B packs a lithium bank, an inverter charger, a DC to DC alternator charger, a solar controller and a shunt into a compartment under a bed or a dinette. It works well and it runs hot. Most no charge complaints we see are the battery management system protecting itself from heat, not a failed cell.

Diagnostics on this run at $285 per hour with a one hour minimum, credited against an authorized repair. That charge buys a documented reading at each stage of the charge path rather than a parts swap, and on a system with four charging sources feeding one bank that documentation is the whole job.

Why interior removal shows up on every body estimate

In a Class B the furniture is bonded and screwed to the same panel we need to reach from inside. A galley, a bed platform and a wet bath frequently have to come out to weld a body side, and the electrical harness the coach builder routed behind them comes out with it. That is not padding on the estimate. It is the access.

We photograph the interior before disassembly and label the harness at every disconnect, because putting a factory Class B back exactly as it left the coach plant is what preserves the unit's value. A van that comes back with a different galley gap than it left with has lost something no repair line recovers.

What Class B work costs here

Body work runs at $210 per hour with body supplies at $5 per body hour and paint supplies at $55 per paint hour. House systems and electrical bill at $260 per hour. A written estimate is $150, credited in full against an authorized repair, and a deposit of fifty percent applies once a job passes $2,000.

The two jobs that surprise owners are a body side section and a high top reseal, because both look small from outside and both involve substantial disassembly to reach. We break those out on the estimate by access, repair and reassembly so the hours are legible rather than lumped.

Who drives these into the shop

Class B owners skew toward people who use the vehicle constantly and daily drive it between trips, which shows up as parking damage and door wear rather than storage rot. A good share are Rancho Santa Margarita households who wanted an RV that fits a normal garage and a normal parking space, and who are consequently very sensitive to a repair that changes how the van looks.

The rest come from adventure travelers who have added a roof rack, an awning and a bike carrier, all of which put loads into a thin roof panel that the coach builder did not account for. Rack mount pull through is a real and recurring item on these vans.

What typically goes wrong on this vehicle

Water entry at the fiberglass high top flange

Building a high top means cutting the factory roof panel out and bonding a molded cap into the opening. That cut line is the only joint on the whole vehicle where a structural steel pressing meets a fiberglass part, and the sealant in it flexes every time the van body twists on a driveway. It leaks at the front corners first.

Sprinter and Transit body sides are under a millimeter of galvanized steel over a long unsupported span. A dent that would be a routine push and skim on a pickup will oil can here, and the manufacturer procedure calls for sectioning at a defined seam rather than building the panel back with filler.

Sliding door dropping and catching at the striker

Coach builders load the door with a screen, a window and sometimes a step, all hung off a track designed for a bare cargo door. Add several hundred cycles a season on a unit somebody lives in and the lower roller carrier walks out of adjustment long before it would on a delivery van.

House battery bank not accepting a charge

A modern Class B runs a lithium bank tied to alternator charging, shore power and often solar through a single Victron or Xantrex ecosystem in a compartment the size of a shoebox. Heat soak in that compartment is the usual culprit, and the battery management system shuts down long before the batteries are actually damaged.

Corrosion blooming along the rear body seam

The rear quarter to floor seam on a Sprinter is a lapped and sealed joint under the body, and coach builders frequently drill it for tank vents, wiring and step brackets. Every unsealed drilling in a galvanized panel is a corrosion start point, and coastal air finds them.

Will it fit in the shop?

A Class B is the easiest recreational vehicle we handle for fit. At nine to ten and a half feet over a high top and under twenty five feet long, it goes in any bay and into the booth with room on all sides, and it sits on a standard lift when we need underside access for a rear seam or a tank bracket. The practical constraint is not space, it is the interior: the house furniture usually has to come out to reach the inside of a body panel, and that removal and reinstall is real hours on the estimate.

Claim

Insurance considerations for this vehicle

  • Confirm early whether your policy treats the unit as a motorhome or as a van with an endorsement. The answer changes what the house contents and the appliances are worth in a claim, and owners routinely find out at the wrong moment.
  • Thin gauge sectioning costs more than a carrier's first estimate assumes, because the software default is often a dent repair line. The manufacturer body repair procedure is what supports the supplement.
  • Lithium banks and inverters need documenting before teardown. Their replacement cost is a meaningful share of a Class B claim and they are easy for an adjuster to overlook behind a panel.

What is the difference between a Class B and a camper van conversion?
A Class B is a motorhome built by a coach manufacturer on a van chassis and carries an RVIA seal, a build sheet and a certified LP and twelve volt install. A conversion is an aftermarket build out on a bare cargo van with none of that documentation. Repairs, parts sourcing and insurance classification all differ.
Can a dent in a Sprinter body side just be filled?
No, and it will not hold if you try. The panel is under a millimeter of galvanized steel over a long unsupported span, so it oil cans when pushed and cracks filler in summer heat. The manufacturer procedure is to section at a defined seam, weld in new material and restore the corrosion protection.
Where does a fiberglass high top actually leak from?
The cap flange, usually at a front corner. The factory roof is a structural steel pressing and the cap is a molded fiberglass part, and the adhesive joint between them works every time the body twists. We drop the headliner and water test in stages to find the real entry rather than sealing over a stain.
Why has my Class B lithium bank stopped taking a charge?
Most often heat. The bank, inverter, DC to DC charger and solar controller share one small compartment, and the battery management system shuts down to protect itself well before any cell is damaged. Diagnostics at $285 per hour documents each stage of the charge path instead of swapping parts on a guess.
Why does your estimate include removing the galley for body work?
Because it is the only way to reach the inside of the panel. Class B furniture is bonded and screwed to the same body side that needs welding, and the coach builder's harness runs behind it. We photograph and label everything before disassembly so the interior goes back exactly as the factory built it.
My roof rack has started pulling out of the roof. Is that fixable?
Yes, and it needs backing plates rather than longer screws. The roof panel on a van was not designed for a loaded rack, awning and bike carrier all pulling on it. We reinforce from inside, reseal the penetrations properly and redistribute the load across structure rather than sheet metal.
