On a commercial unit the invoice has two halves that often have nothing to do with each other. One half is the cab, which is a stamped, SMC or aluminum shell mounted on isolators to a pair of frame rails. The other half is whatever is bolted behind it: a deck, a van body, an insulated box, a dump bed. Damage in one tells you very little about the other, and an estimate that runs them together is one no adjuster or fleet controller can read.
The second thing every operator on this page shares is arithmetic. A truck standing in a bay costs the payment, the driver and the route, every day, whether anyone is turning a wrench on it. That is why we order parts before teardown wherever the damage allows and bring the unit in when they land. Eight unit types below. Find the row that matches what is down.
Schedule of work
Two repairable objects on one repair order
The first thing we do at intake on a commercial unit is decide which of two vehicles is damaged, because the answer changes the parts source, the labor department and the lead time. Cab parts come from a chassis dealer network and usually arrive quickly. Body parts come from the body builder or from a specialty supplier, and a rear frame section or a curtain header can take weeks. Writing both into one undifferentiated scope guarantees the whole job waits on the slowest line.
So the estimate separates them by design. Cab structure, cab panels and cab refinish sit in one block. Body structure, body panels, doors and hardware sit in another. Frame work sits in a third, because a rail crack affects both and has to be corrected before either is closed up. A fleet controller can then authorize the cab half immediately and hold the body half until parts confirm.
Which unit is down
Operators describe trucks by what they carry, which is exactly the right instinct, because the cargo dictated the body and the body dictates the repair. A beverage body has doors down both sides and a floor built for pallet jacks. A reefer has no windows, foamed panels and a unit hanging off the front wall. A dump body has a hoist and a hinge and spends its life being loaded unevenly.
The table sorts all eight types by body length, weight class, what the cab and body are made of, and the first failure we look for. The weight class column matters for scheduling as much as for repair: a Class 8 tractor and a Class 4 walk in occupy very different amounts of floor, and we stage them differently.

Bodies, not sheet metal
A commercial body is an assembly with a construction logic, and repairing it means understanding that logic rather than treating it as a large panel. Sheet and post aluminum uses vertical posts on defined centers with sheet riveted or bonded across them, so a repair follows post lines and a patch that ignores them will work loose. Fiberglass reinforced plywood is a bonded laminate, so damage that looks superficial has usually broken the bond behind it.
Reefer bodies are the strictest case. The insulation is foamed in place, which means the panel is structural, insulating and vapor sealing all at once. A puncture that gets filled from outside leaves wet foam behind the repair, the wet foam loses its insulating value permanently, and the operator discovers it as a temperature deviation on a load six months later. Those panels get cut out and replaced with the vapor barrier restored, or they do not get repaired.
Before you proceed
Water inside foamed reefer insulation does not dry out. Once a panel has taken water, patching the skin only hides a permanent loss of thermal performance.
Reflective marking, lettering and the compliance line
Any repair that disturbs the rear or the sides of a commercial body puts DOT conspicuity marking back into scope. The requirement is specific about placement, alternating pattern and coverage along the rear and lower sides, and a body that leaves a shop with tape approximated by eye is a body that can be cited. We measure and restore it to the pattern, and we photograph the finished marking into the file.
Lettering and USDOT numbering follow the same discipline. Legal identification has size and contrast requirements, and a refinished door that goes back with a vinyl set eyeballed into position is a compliance risk for the operator rather than for us. We template from photographs taken before disassembly, which is also how the graphics end up in the same place they were.
Liftgates, roll up doors and the parts that fail on route
The components that actually strand a delivery truck are rarely body panels. They are a roll up door that has jumped its track, a liftgate that will not lift under load, a bay door latch that has worn past adjustment. All of those are cycled dozens of times a day, which is a duty cycle no other vehicle class on this site experiences, and they wear predictably rather than failing randomly.
We treat that as maintenance work with a body department component. A Whiting or Todco door that keeps jumping usually has a distorted track from a strike, not a bad door, and straightening the track is a body repair. A Maxon or Tommy Gate mount that has cracked is a rear frame repair before it is a liftgate repair. Fixing the mechanism without correcting what distorted it produces a return visit within a month.
Downtime is the number that matters
Retail customers ask what a repair costs. Operators ask how many days, and they are asking the more useful question, because a Class 6 delivery truck sitting for nine days costs more in missed routes than most body repairs cost in labor. We plan around that from the first phone call rather than treating it as a scheduling detail at the end.
In practice that means three things. We photograph and scope quickly so parts can be ordered while the truck is still working. We commit to a start date rather than a queue position. And where a fleet has several units needing work, we stage them so an agreed maximum are down at once and the rest keep earning. That rotation is negotiated up front against your calendar, not ours.
What commercial work costs
The rate card does not change because a unit is commercial. Body and cab hours are $210, mechanical and electrical are $260, and diagnostics are $285 with a one hour minimum credited against an authorized repair. Paint supplies bill at $55 per paint hour and body supplies at $5 per body hour, with sales tax on parts and materials only.
Purchase order and net 30 billing are available on established accounts, which is the usual arrangement for anything with a route attached. Deposits still apply on retail and owner operator work: fifty percent at authorization over $2,000, with a further twenty five percent when parts arrive on jobs over $10,000. A written estimate is $150 and is credited in full against an authorized repair.

In shop only, and getting a Class 8 unit here
There is no roadside option here and no mobile repair truck; the unit is delivered to La Palma Avenue and worked inside. Frame correction needs anchoring to a slab, welded aluminum body work needs a controlled environment, and refinish needs the booth. A truck repaired in a yard is a truck with a coating system that will not last a Southern California summer on a south facing panel.
Physical fit is not the constraint people expect. Bay doors give sixteen feet of clear height, the downdraft booth takes sixty feet of length, and a sleeper tractor goes in with the hood on. Approach is the thing to plan: bring a Class 8 unit up the 241 to the 91 rather than through surface streets, and call ahead so we stage the yard for a long unit rather than having you reverse into traffic.
What this class has in common
Frame: two parallel steel rails, typically eight to twelve inches deep, joined by bolted crossmembers. Both the cab and the body mount to those rails, the cab on isolators and the body on U bolts, brackets or a bolted subframe with wood sills.
Cabs: SMC composite and aluminum on a Freightliner Cascadia, Peterbilt 579 or Kenworth T680, steel on medium duty Freightliner M2 106 and International MV, and welded aluminum walk in shells from Utilimaster and Morgan Olson on parcel bodies.
Van bodies: fiberglass reinforced plywood or sheet and post aluminum over a hardwood floor, with a steel or aluminum rear frame and a Whiting or Todco roll up door running in a track.
Reefer bodies are a different animal. Polyurethane is foamed in place between inner and outer skins, so a puncture is an insulation failure as well as a skin failure, and a Carrier or Thermo King unit hangs on the front wall adding its own load.
Specialty bodies bring their own structure: a dump body on a hoist and hinge set, a curtain side on aluminum posts and a tensioned header rail, beverage bays with roll up doors down both sides, and Maxon or Tommy Gate liftgates bolted to the rear frame extension.
The damage profile we see on this class

Appendix: questions and answers
- Do the cab and the body go on one repair order or two?
- One order, three separated blocks: cab, body and frame. The reason is lead time. Cab parts come from a chassis dealer network and move quickly, body parts come from the body builder and can take weeks. Splitting the blocks lets you authorize the fast half immediately instead of waiting on the slow one.
- How is DOT conspicuity tape handled after a body repair?
- It is measured and restored to the required pattern along the rear and lower sides, not approximated by eye, and the finished marking is photographed into the file. Legal lettering and USDOT numbering are templated from photographs taken before disassembly so both position and size come back correct.
- Can a reefer panel be patched, or does the panel come out?
- If water has reached the foam, the panel section comes out. Foamed in place insulation does not dry, so a skin patch traps wet foam and the thermal loss becomes permanent. Operators find out later as a temperature deviation on a load. We cut out the affected section and restore the vapor barrier properly.
- Can you stage several trucks so a route keeps running?
- Yes, and that is the normal arrangement for route operators. We agree a maximum number down at once and sequence the rest around your calendar. Parts are ordered before each unit arrives so a truck is never occupying a bay as a shelf. One point of contact carries every file in the rotation.
- Is a dump body repair welding work or frame work?
- Usually both, in that order. Repeated off center loading distorts the body rails and wears the tailgate pins, and the hoist mount transmits that into the chassis. We inspect the hoist mounts and the frame first, correct any distortion there, then rebuild the body rails and pins so the gate seats square again.
- Will a sleeper tractor fit your paint booth?
- Yes. The downdraft booth takes sixty feet of length and the bay doors give sixteen feet of clear height, so a Class 8 tractor goes in with the hood and fairings on. Bring it up the 241 to the 91 and call ahead so the yard is staged for a long unit rather than a reverse into traffic.
