Structural work is the one category where a repair either measures correct or it does not, and where opinion has no role at all. A rail is within tolerance of factory data or it is out. A rocker is back to its datum or it is not. Why nothing here is quoted before it is measured
A structural estimate written from photographs is a guess dressed up as a document, and it fails in both directions. It is too low when a second control point turns out to be out, and too high when what looked like a bent rail turns out to be a bent bracket bolted to a rail that never moved. Neither outcome helps you and neither survives an adjuster who knows the category.
So the sequence is inverted here compared with every other department in the building. The unit is anchored, measured against factory control points, and a deviation sheet is printed before anyone writes a price. That session is billed at the diagnostics rate with a one hour minimum and credits in full against an authorized repair. It is the cheapest hour you will spend on the whole job because it eliminates the argument about what is actually wrong.
Note
If another shop has quoted your structural repair without putting the unit on a rack, ask which control points they measured. There is no acceptable answer that does not involve numbers.
When the unit tracks wrong but nothing looks bent
A coach that crabs down the lane, wanders under crosswind or wears the inside edge off a rear tire in four thousand miles usually has a geometry problem rather than a broken part. Axles shift on their hangers, springs take a set unevenly, and a curb strike hard enough to move a suspension mount will not necessarily leave a mark you can find. The correction is measurement and adjustment rather than pulling, and it is a different fixture setup from rail work.
When a main rail has folded
Frame rails fail in compression, and the fold usually sits just behind whatever hit it or just ahead of a crossmember that stopped the energy. Once a rail has buckled, the material at the fold has work hardened and pulling it back is a staged operation with heat control and measurement between every stage. Pull it in one motion to the number and you overshoot, then you are correcting a correction. There is also a point past which pulling stops being honest and the section gets cut out and replaced instead.
When the body is the structure
A Sprinter, a Transit or a ProMaster has no separate frame. The floor pan, rockers, pillars and roof rails together are the structure, which means a door that will not close is a structural symptom rather than a hinge problem. These units get fixtured differently, sectioned only at manufacturer designated cut lines, and joined with the process the maker specifies rather than whatever welder is nearest. Camper van conversions add a wrinkle: the build out inside is carrying load it was never designed to carry, and it has to come out before the shell can move.
When mounted structure tears away from the frame
Below the main rails sits a second layer that owners rarely think about until it fails: generator cradles, holding tank supports, pin box structure on a fifth wheel, step frames and hitch reinforcement. These carry concentrated load through a small number of welds and fasteners, and they crack from cycling rather than from a single event. A fifth wheel that has started sitting nose low, or a generator that has begun to sound different because its cradle is flexing, is telling you about this layer.
When all you need is the numbers
Plenty of owners come to us needing a measurement and nothing else: a buyer wanting to know whether a suspiciously cheap coach has been hit, an owner whose carrier has proposed a total loss, or a second opinion on a repair someone else has already performed. That is a standalone job here rather than a favor attached to a repair. You get the anchoring, the control point comparison and the printed sheet, and you take it wherever you like.
The rack is one resource and that shapes your date
Body stalls we have several of. The measuring and pulling setup is singular, and a 40 foot coach occupies it for the entire correction rather than in bursts. That is the honest reason a structural date is quoted further out than a paint date, and it is why we separate the measuring appointment from the correction appointment where we can.
Practically, a measuring session can usually be scheduled inside a week and takes a day. Correction gets booked once you have seen the sheet and decided. Splitting it that way means you are not holding a rack slot while you talk to your carrier, and it means the correction slot is booked against a known scope instead of an estimate that might triple.
What drives the cost of structural correction
Rack work bills from the body and paint department at $210 per hour, with body supplies at $5 per body hour. Measurement bills separately at $285 per hour with a one hour minimum and credits against an authorized repair. Parts carry standard markup and sales tax applies to parts and materials while labor is not taxed.
Setup time is the cost driver people never predict. Anchoring a 38 foot coach at manufacturer designated points, supporting the house structure so it does not distort while the chassis moves, and building the pull geometry can take a full day before the first tension goes on. On a van it is two hours. That difference, far more than the size of the bend, is why the range on this page runs from three thousand dollars to twenty and beyond.

Structural jobs over $2,000 take a 50 percent deposit at authorization, and a further 25 percent when parts arrive on anything over $10,000.
How structural damage gets argued with a carrier
This is the easiest category in the building to get approved and the hardest to get approved quickly. Easy, because a printed deviation sheet is objective evidence and nobody argues with a control point that is nine millimeters out. Slow, because most adjusters handling an RV loss have automotive reference data in front of them and no equivalent for a 40 foot coach on a Freightliner chassis.
What moves it along is sending the before sheet with the original estimate rather than holding it for the supplement. Carriers approve what they can verify. A scope that says the left rail is bent reads as an opinion. A scope with a measurement table attached reads as a finding, and the difference in turnaround is usually a full week.
On the claim
Fatigue cracking and rust through are not sudden losses. If we find them alongside impact damage, they are separated out and quoted to you before any work proceeds.
What fits on the rack and what does not

Semi tractors, box bodies and fire apparatus all fit. Anchor and set up the pull

Clamping points, pull directions and load sequence are planned before any tension goes on. On a 40 foot coach a badly planned pull can flex the house structure while the chassis is still moving under it.
Correct in stages and re measure

Tension goes on, comes off, and the point is measured again. Repeat until the deviation closes. Sectioning or replacement happens when a member has work hardened past the point where pulling it back is honest.

- When does a frame rail get replaced instead of pulled straight?
- When the metal at the fold has work hardened past the point where it will take correction without cracking, or when a previous repair has already stretched it once. We make that call from the material behind the bend, not from how bad the kink looks from underneath.
- Is a straightened frame as strong as it was before?
- A correctly pulled and verified rail returns to within factory tolerance at every control point, and sectioned members are replaced with material meeting the original specification. What we will not do is pull a member that will not come back within tolerance and call it finished.
- Does the RV house structure get damaged while the chassis is pulled?
- Not if it is supported first. The house is bolted to the frame and will happily follow a rail that is moving under tension. Supporting the coach body before the pull is a setup step that costs hours, and skipping it is how a straightened chassis arrives with cracked interior trim.
- My fifth wheel started sitting nose low. Is that the frame?
- Usually the pin box support structure rather than the main rails. That area carries the entire hitch load through a small number of welds, and it cracks progressively rather than all at once. Measure before you adjust the hitch height, because raising the truck side hides the symptom and loads the crack further.
- Can you measure a coach I am thinking about buying?
- Yes, and it is one of the more common reasons the rack gets booked. You get anchoring, a control point comparison and the printed sheet. Bring the unit with the seller's permission and enough time, because a proper session on a 40 foot coach takes most of a working day.
- What welding process do you use on structural repairs?
- It depends on the material and the manufacturer procedure. Steel chassis sections are MIG welded with matching filler, aluminum structure is TIG welded, and van shells are joined at the cut lines and by the process the maker specifies. Substituting a process on a unibody shell is not an option.
- Why is the wait for structural work longer than for body work?
