Ask an operator what is wrong with their box truck and the answer is usually about the door. It sticks, it will not stay up, it binds two thirds of the way down. Almost none of those complaints are actually about the door, and that is the most useful thing we can tell you about this vehicle. A roll up door is a precision assembly bolted into a body that flexes, so it reports on the body's condition long before anything else does.
The rest of the pattern is just as consistent. Floors rot from the rear sill forward. Bottom rails collect dock strikes at a height set by somebody else's trailer. Subframe mounts let go quietly and the body settles behind the rear axle. None of it is exotic and all of it compounds if the truck stays in service while it develops.

A box truck is a straight truck: a 16 to 26 foot body on a medium duty chassis such as an Isuzu NPR, a Hino 268 or a Freightliner M2 106, very often specified at 25,995 lb so it can be driven without a commercial license. A cube body on a van cutaway is a high cube van, a smaller and lighter thing entirely. A tractor pulling a trailer on a fifth wheel is a semi.
Identify the body before you diagnose anything
Three wall constructions dominate this class and they behave differently. Sheet and post carries the load in vertical posts with a riveted skin, so damage travels through the rivet lines. Laminated fiberglass reinforced plywood makes the wall itself the structure, which repairs more like a panel and less like a frame. A one piece composite shell has no rivet lines at all and needs bonded repair rather than mechanical fastening.
The builder plate tells us which one we have, along with post spacing and part numbers, and it is usually on the rear frame or inside the left rear post. Morgan, Supreme, Rockport, Utilimaster and US Truck Body all serve this segment and none of their sections interchange. Knowing the builder on day one is the difference between parts arriving in a week and parts arriving in three.

The roll up door is telling you about the body
A Todco or Whiting door needs its two tracks parallel within a small tolerance and its counterbalance drum tensioned to the panel weight. Neither of those things fails on its own very often. What happens is that the body moves, the tracks stop being parallel, and the panel binds at the height where the mismatch is worst. The operator cranks the spring tension to force it through and the drum starts wearing out early.
So when we get a door complaint, the first measurement is the opening. Diagonals, top rail straightness, track parallelism at three heights. If those are out, the door repair happens after the body repair, in that order, and we say so before quoting hardware. Fixing the door on a racked opening is a two month solution to a two year problem.

Rear frames, liftgates and ICC bars
The rear frame does three jobs at once: it ties the sidewalls together, it carries the door tracks, and on most trucks in this class it holds a tuck under liftgate that lifts a rated load dozens of times a day. Every one of those gate cycles applies a rotating moment at the mounting plates, and every dock approach risks a hit on the ICC bar just below.
When the frame loses square, the repair means unloading it completely. The gate comes off, the frame is measured, pulled and reinforced where the section allows, then the gate goes back and gets cycled under load. That removal and refit is real hours and it belongs on the estimate as a separate line so nobody thinks it was hidden.
Dock bumper height and what it hits on a straight truck
Docks are built for trailers. A trailer bumper contacts at one height, a straight truck sits differently, and the result is that dock bumpers meet the bottom rail of a box body or the skin just above it. The visible damage is a horizontal crease. The invisible damage is the lower end of two or three posts buckled behind that crease.
That is why we open the wall on any bottom rail crease rather than filling it. Buckled posts leave the wall unsupported, and the symptom a month later is a row of working rivets and a panel that reads wavy in the sun. Sectioning the post ends and replacing the rail is the honest repair, and it prices higher than the dent looked.
Before you proceed
Never judge a dock strike on a sheet and post body by the size of the crease. The posts behind it carry the wall, and their condition sets the scope.
Floors, hand trucks and the two feet inside the door
The floor in these bodies is laminated hardwood over steel crossmembers, rated for pallet jack and hand truck traffic. It fails in a predictable place: two feet inside the rear sill, where water follows the door in and where every load crosses. On appliance and furniture work that area sees a hundred wheel passes a day on wet wood.
Repair means the boards come up so the crossmembers can be seen and treated, because a rotted floor usually sits on corroded steel. Screwing new plywood over a soft floor is common in this industry, it hides the crossmember condition, and it is how a body ends up with a hole in it at the worst possible moment. We replace to the nearest sound member and treat the steel while it is exposed.
The body settles behind the axle and nobody notices
A 26 foot body has a lot of length behind the drive axle, and the mounting system holding it down depends on tension in U-bolts and the condition of a hardwood or steel sill. Nobody re-torques those. As the clamps relax, the rear of the body drops a fraction, the rear opening racks, and the door starts binding at half height.
We check body height at the rear corners against the front, torque every clamp, and inspect the sill for crush. Where the sill is crushed it gets replaced, and where the mounting brackets have elongated their holes we rebuild them. It is quiet, unglamorous work and it is the reason a door repair holds afterward.
Thirteen and a half feet of body meets a canyon road
A box truck stands close to 13 feet 6 inches, and drivers in this area routinely take these units up canyon roads where oak and eucalyptus branches hang lower than the map suggests. The strike lands on the front roof edge or punches the roof panel between bows. Translucent fiberglass panels split at the bow line and aluminum roofs tear along the fastener row.
Roof repairs get done with the panel condition assessed from above and from inside, since a puncture that looks small often comes with a bent bow. We also check the front header extrusion on any roof edge strike, because that seam is directly behind the impact and it is where water will show up next winter if it was missed.
Rates, days and getting a 26 footer back on route
Body and structural work bills at $210 per hour with body supplies at $5 per body hour. Deposits are fifty percent above $2,000 and an additional twenty five percent lands at parts arrival above $10,000, which describes most rear frame jobs on these trucks. A written estimate is $150 and credits in full against an authorized repair.
For a fleet, the sequencing question is which truck can be released and for how long. A door and track job is two to four days. A rear frame with gate removal and refit is two to three weeks depending on body builder parts. We commit to a date at authorization and tell you which of those two situations you are in before the truck is stripped.

What typically goes wrong on this vehicle
Roll up door binding partway and refusing to stay up
Todco and Whiting doors run in two tracks that must stay parallel within a narrow tolerance, with counterbalance spring tension in a drum overhead. The body flexes, the tracks lose parallel, and the panel jams at whatever height the mismatch is worst. Owners then adjust spring tension to force it, which masks a body problem and shortens the drum life at the same time.

Water follows a roll up door inward and puddles at the sill, and the laminated hardwood floor sits directly on steel crossmembers there. On a truck doing appliance or furniture work, a hand truck runs over that exact area a hundred times a day. So the wettest part of the floor is also the most abused part, and it goes soft two feet in from the door.

Dock bumpers are set for trailer height and a straight truck sits differently, so the contact point lands on the bottom rail or just above it rather than on a bumper. A crease at that height buckles the lower end of two or three posts, and because the posts carry the wall, the damage travels upward as loose rivets and a wall that no longer sits flat.

A 26 foot body has real overhang behind the tandem or single drive axle, and the subframe clamps holding it rely on tension in U-bolts that nobody re-torques. As they relax, the rear of the body droops a fraction of an inch, which is enough to rack the rear opening and start the door binding. The gap at the top of the doorway is the first visible sign.

Will it fit in the shop?
A 26 foot body on an M2 measures about 35 feet overall and stands close to 13 feet 6 inches, which puts it comfortably inside the sixteen foot doors and inside the sixty foot booth. Rear frame work is done with the body supported and the liftgate removed, so we need a bay with clear rear access rather than a paint slot. Floor work happens from inside with the boards up and the crossmembers exposed. Everything is in shop at the Yorba Linda facility, and we schedule long bodies with the door alignment check at the end rather than the beginning.
Insurance considerations for this vehicle
- Dock strikes are collision losses and they are usually approved without argument, because the damage height and shape are unmistakable. What gets argued is the extent: a crease on a bottom rail is visible, the buckled post ends behind it are not, and that is what the supplement covers.
- Floor rot, relaxed U-bolts and a worn door drum are maintenance. We separate those onto customer pay lines so the claim portion of the estimate is defensible on its own.
- Liftgates are frequently insured as scheduled equipment with their own value, and they have to come off for rear frame work. Confirm the gate coverage before authorization so the removal, refit and any gate repair land on the right line.
Appendix: questions and answers
- Why does my box truck roll up door bind halfway down?
- The two tracks are no longer parallel, which almost always means the opening has racked. We measure the rear opening diagonals and track parallelism at three heights before quoting hardware. Squaring the opening comes first, then track alignment, then the door itself. Adding spring tension to force it through just wears the drum out early.
- Why is the floor soft two feet inside my rear door?
- That strip is the wettest and the most abused part of the body. Water follows the roll up door in and puddles at the sill, and every hand truck crosses the same boards. We remove the boards to the nearest sound crossmember, treat the corroded steel underneath and replace properly rather than screwing plywood over it.
- Can a crease in the bottom rail just be filled and painted?
- No, because the posts behind it are usually buckled. On a sheet and post body the posts carry the wall, and a dock strike at bumper height buckles their lower ends. Fill the crease and a month later the rivets work loose and the wall reads wavy. We open it, section the post ends and replace the rail.
- What makes the back of a 26 foot body droop?
- Relaxed subframe clamps. U-bolts holding the body to the rails lose tension and the hardwood or steel sill crushes, so the overhang behind the drive axle settles a fraction of an inch. That is enough to rack the rear opening and start the door binding. We check body height at the corners, re-torque and replace crushed sill material.
- Does the liftgate have to come off for rear frame work?
- Yes. The frame cannot be measured or pulled with a gate hanging on it, so the gate is removed, the frame is squared and reinforced, then the gate goes back and is cycled under load. That removal and refit appears as its own estimate line. Check whether your policy schedules the gate separately before authorizing.
- A branch punched through my box truck roof. What is involved?
- More than the hole. We assess the panel from above and from inside, because a puncture that looks small usually comes with a bent bow, and we inspect the front header extrusion on any roof edge strike.
