Hail Damage Claims on RV Roofs and Fifth Wheels

How does an insurer inspect and pay an RV hail claim?

A hail inspection looks strange the first time you watch one. Somebody climbs onto the roof with a piece of chalk and a tape, draws a square, and starts counting dents inside it. They do the same on the front cap, then each side, then the rear. Twenty minutes later they come down with a number that decides your claim, and none of it involved looking at the roof as a whole.
That method is the thing worth understanding, because it is where hail files get won and lost. A count taken in the wrong place, or a square drawn on a panel that took the least of the storm, produces a scope that does not match the vehicle. And the count is only half of it. The other half is whether the membrane still keeps water out.
How a hail file actually gets inspected
The inspector marks squares of a fixed size, conventionally on the roof and on each of the four elevations, then counts strike marks inside each square. That density gets extrapolated across the full surface area to produce a total, and the total drives whether panels are repaired, refinished or replaced. It is a sampling method, which means the placement of the sample is everything.
On a forty foot fifth wheel the roof is not evenly hit. Wind drives hail at an angle, so the leading edge above the pin box and the upwind elevation take more than the lee side. A square drawn only on the sheltered half produces a low count. We ask for squares on both the exposed and sheltered sections, and we photograph each marked square with its count visible.
What a test square is, and how many should be used
A test square is a chalked area of known dimension used as a sampling frame. Its purpose is to make an unmanageable count manageable: nobody is going to individually mark four hundred square feet of roof, so a representative area gets counted and scaled. The count matters less than whether the squares represent the whole surface honestly.
One square on a large roof is not a survey. On a long unit we expect several on the roof itself, positioned front, middle and rear, plus one per elevation. Where a count is disputed, the fix is rarely an argument. It is another square, drawn in the presence of both parties, on the section under dispute, and photographed from a fixed height with a scale in frame.
Cosmetic dents against a compromised membrane
This is the distinction the whole claim turns on. A dimple in an EPDM or TPO membrane that has stretched but not split is cosmetic: unattractive, not a leak. A bruise is different. A bruise is an impact that has crushed the substrate under the membrane and often broken the membrane's internal reinforcement, so it will fail, and the failure will be over wet lauan decking rather than over open air.
We look for bruising by feel and by reading. A bruised area goes soft underfoot compared with sound decking either side of it, and a moisture meter reading taken at that spot differs from a reading two feet away. Both go in the file with the location recorded against a roof diagram, because a photograph of a grey membrane rarely shows a bruise at all.
On the claim
A cosmetic hail scope on a roof with bruised decking is the most expensive outcome available, because the claim closes and the leak arrives two rainy seasons later as an uncovered maintenance issue.
Aluminum, fiberglass and TPO all record hail differently
Material dictates the evidence. Riveted aluminum on an Airstream dimples permanently and cannot be filled without compromising the panel's character, so the conversation moves quickly to panel replacement and rivet work. Filon and gelcoated fiberglass can fracture in a star pattern around an impact, and those fractures propagate under thermal cycling even when they look trivial on the day.
Membrane roofs record the least and hide the most. EPDM and TPO stretch over the impact rather than marking clearly, which is why an experienced inspection walks the roof rather than photographing it from a ladder. Lids on Fan-Tastic and MaxxAir vents, plastic skylights and the air conditioner shroud crack readily and are counted as separate line items from the membrane itself.

Why a hail deductible is often the higher one
Owners routinely budget for the figure they remember from a collision and find a different number applied to a storm. Wind and hail are commonly written with their own deductible, and on higher value units that deductible is sometimes expressed as a percentage of insured value rather than as a flat amount, which on a large coach is a materially bigger number.
We ask the carrier which deductible is being applied before authorization rather than after, so nobody is surprised at pickup. Whether a percentage or flat figure applies to your policy is on your declarations page, and it is a question for your carrier rather than for us. What we can do is make sure the scope is complete before that arithmetic is run against it.
Catastrophe adjusters, and why the first pass is fast
A significant storm produces thousands of claims in days, and carriers surge staff to handle them. Those inspectors are working volume, frequently in an unfamiliar region, and on vehicle types they may not see often. The result is a fast, competent survey of the obvious and very little investigation of what sits under a membrane.
None of that is bad faith. It is throughput. The practical response is to make the non obvious findings impossible to miss: a roof diagram with bruise locations marked, moisture readings logged by position, photographs of soft areas with a straight edge laid across them to show deflection. A surge inspector will accept a documented finding readily. They will simply not go looking for it.
Hail that happened in another state, months ago
This comes up constantly with owners who travel. A storm caught the unit in Texas or Colorado in July, nothing obvious leaked, and the damage surfaces in October back in California. Whether a claim remains reportable depends on your policy's conditions and on the carrier's assessment, and it is a question to put to them directly rather than to assume either way.
What helps is establishing when. Named storm dates and archived weather records for a specific location on a specific day are obtainable, and they turn a vague recollection into a documented event. Pair that with photographs from the trip if any exist. What weakens the file is a long undocumented gap, because the alternative explanation is simple accumulated wear.
When a hail roof becomes a replacement rather than a repair
Spot repairs make sense for a small number of discrete impacts on otherwise sound decking. Once bruising is distributed across the surface, patching stops being sensible, because every patch is a new seam and seams are where roofs fail. At some density the labor to chase individual impacts exceeds the labor to strip and re-membrane the whole roof.
That crossover is what a documented count exists to establish. Body and paint work bills at $210 per hour with body supplies at $5 per body hour, so hour counts move the comparison directly. We put the count, the bruise map and both scopes in front of the adjuster and let the numbers make the argument rather than asserting a conclusion.

Every spot repair adds a seam, and seams are where roofs fail, so beyond a certain density the hours to chase individual strikes exceed the hours to strip and re-membrane. A documented count is what establishes that crossover.
