Spot Repair and Panel Blend Matching on RV Bodywork

What is panel blend matching and when does a spot repair need it?

Blending fades new color outward into existing paint so no hard edge exists between old and new. Because an RV has no panel gaps, our Yorba Linda painters carry the blend to a rail, molding or body line. Rancho Santa Margarita owners use this for scrapes, small repairs and single area damage.

Last verified

Somebody in the next space opened a door into your side. A shopping cart found the rear corner. A branch on the canyon road left a scrape two feet long. The damage itself is minor and everybody agrees on that. The hard part is not repairing it. The hard part is finishing the repair so that nobody can find it when the light is low and they are looking for it.

That is what blending does. Rather than painting an area and stopping at its edge, new color is faded outward into the existing finish until the two become indistinguishable, and the clear is then carried out to a place where a break already exists. On a vehicle with panel gaps this is routine. On a coach sidewall with none, deciding where the clear ends is most of the skill.

What a blend actually does to the eye

Human vision is very good at finding edges and fairly poor at judging absolute color. Two shades a fraction apart look identical when they are eight feet from each other and obviously different when they meet at a line. A blend exploits that. By fading new color outward into existing paint over a wide area, there is no line for the eye to catch, and a match that is imperfect on a meter becomes invisible in practice.

That is why blending is not a shortcut or a way of hiding a poor match. It is the correct method even when the match is excellent, because film that was sprayed today sits on top of film that has been in the sun for eight years, and those two will always differ slightly in gloss and depth. Melting one into the other removes the comparison rather than winning it.

Finding a break on a body with no panel gaps

Base coat can be faded out invisibly. Clear coat cannot. Clear has thickness and gloss, so wherever it ends there is a physical edge, and on a large flat surface that edge is findable no matter how carefully it was tapered. This is the whole reason blend planning on an RV is different from blend planning on a car.

So we look for something that already interrupts the surface. Awning rails, belt moldings, body swages, decal edges, compartment door openings and the radius where the sidewall turns into the roof all qualify. The choice is often about distance: the nearest break may be ten feet from the damage, which sets the size of the job far more than the size of the damage does.

Metallic flop and why untested repairs fail

Metallic and pearl finishes contain flake suspended in the film, and how that flake lies determines what you see. Look straight on and you get the face color. Walk past at an angle and you get the flop, which can be dramatically lighter or darker. Two films with identical pigment can read completely differently if the flake settled at different angles, and flake orientation is controlled by gun setup, air pressure, distance and how wet the coat went on.

This is why a spot repair on a metallic fails when nobody sprays a test card. The mix is technically correct, it goes on the coach, and it matches perfectly from directly in front and looks like a different color from the driver's seat of the car parked next to it. Confirming flop on a dried and cleared card takes an hour and it prevents the most expensive redo in this department.

Our blend sequence from damage to polish

The order matters because each stage constrains the next. Assess before quoting, choose the break before spraying, confirm the match before the gun touches the unit, and polish only after the clear has had its cure window. Reordering any of those produces a job that has to be done a second time, usually at the shop's expense rather than the owner's.

The one stage owners are surprised by is the card. It feels like a delay when the coach is already masked and ready to go. It is also the best value hour in the entire process, because the alternative to an hour spent on a card is a full day of sanding a mismatched blend back off a sidewall that was finished yesterday.

  3. Repair, prime and block the damaged area flat
  4. Spray, dry and clear a test card at production gun settings
  5. Compare the card against the coach in daylight, not booth light
  6. Blend base outward, clear to the break, cure, then polish

When a spot repair is the wrong call

Some damage sits in the worst possible place: dead centre of a large flat side with no break within reason. At that point the honest options are refinishing the whole side or accepting a clear edge somewhere, and the second option is a repair with a known future problem in it. We say which situation you are in rather than quoting the cheaper version and letting you discover it later.

The other case is a surface that has aged past matching. On heavily chalked gelcoat or a failing clear, new paint will not agree with what is around it no matter how good the match is, because the surrounding surface has no gloss left to match to. Those units need a refinish rather than a blend, and blending into them is money spent on a result nobody will be pleased with.

Note

If the paint around your damage is already dull enough that water no longer beads on it, a blend will read as a bright patch. That surface needs refinishing first, and we will show you the difference on a test area.

What spot repair and blending costs

The number is driven by two things that have nothing to do with the size of the damage: how far away the nearest break is, and what kind of color the coach wears. A hand sized scuff near an awning rail on a solid white trailer is a short job. The same scuff mid panel on a tri coat pearl coach is several times the hours, because the clear has to travel and the color needs a let down panel to get right.

Paint supplies bill per paint hour and body supplies per body hour. Parts carry standard markup, sales tax applies to parts and materials, and labor is not taxed. Where the damage has reached laminate, fiberglass repair hours are added on top of the paint work and shown separately. The written estimate is $150 and is credited in full against an authorized repair.

On cost

The size of the damage is a poor predictor of the price. Distance to the nearest break and the type of color are what actually move the number, and both are visible at estimate.

Units we perform blend work on

Towables and mid size motorhomes make up most of this work because they collect exactly the kind of low speed contact damage that suits a blend. Storage lots, campground spaces and narrow driveways account for a remarkable share of the estimates we write, and the damage tends to land at corners, entry door areas and lower body.

Vans are their own case. Sprinter and cargo van bodies do have real panel breaks, doors, sliders and swage lines, so blends on them behave much more like automotive work and cost accordingly. Commercial operators tend to bring several units at once for exactly that reason, since the per unit time is predictable.

Insurance, blend time and adjacent panel allowances

Blend time is a recognized line on any properly written estimate and adjusters allow it routinely on automotive work. On RVs the argument is occasionally harder, because an appraiser used to cars sees a large blend area and questions it without understanding that the vehicle has no panel gap to stop at. The counter is a photograph showing the nearest break and the distance to it.

The other frequent discussion is whether an adjacent area needs clear at all. On a body with genuine panel breaks, that conversation resolves quickly. On a continuous sidewall it needs to be established at estimate with images, because after the fact it becomes an argument about work already performed, which is a much worse position for everybody involved.

On the claim

Photograph the damage and the nearest usable break in the same frame, with a tape measure showing the distance. That single image settles most blend allowance questions before they turn into a supplement.

Process

How the work runs

  1. Assess depth and scope

    30 to 60 minutes

    The damage gets checked for anything below the coating. A scrape that has reached laminate becomes a fiberglass repair with a blend on the end, and pricing that as paint work only would be dishonest about what the job actually is.

  2. Choose the break

    30 minutes to 2 hours

    We walk the panel and pick where the clear will terminate: an awning rail, a molding, a swage line, a decal edge or a roof radius. This is decided before any spraying, because a blend without a planned break becomes a visible line no amount of polishing removes.

  3. Repair and prime the damage

    1 to 8 hours

    The damaged area is repaired, filled if needed, and primed with urethane surfacer, then blocked flat and feathered well outside the repair so there is no step for the base to reveal later.

  4. Confirm the match on a card

    1 to 3 hours

    The color is sprayed onto a card at the same gun setup, air pressure, distance and flash timing as the job, then dried and cleared. That card is checked against the coach in daylight and under corrected light before anything is sprayed on the unit.

  5. Blend, clear and polish

    2 to 12 hours

    Base goes on the repair and is faded outward in progressively lighter passes into the existing finish. Clear is then carried to the chosen break, cured, de-nibbed and polished so the gloss level agrees with the surrounding surface.

  • Color drift in the original finish from ultraviolet exposure, which means a repair matched to the paint code will not match the coach
  • Replaced components delivered in a factory shade that no longer corresponds to a sun aged body
  • Stone chipping along the lower body from freeway debris, concentrated behind the wheels

Caution

What not to try yourself

  • Touch up paint from a bottle on a metallic finish. The flake will not orient the way it did in a sprayed film, and the dab reads as a dark spot from every angle you did not test.
  • Wet sanding a scratch to make it disappear. On a clear coat with unknown remaining film, this is a fast route from a scratch you can see to a burn through you cannot fix without spraying.
  • Accepting a repair where the clear stops in the middle of a sidewall. That line will collect dirt, become visible within a year, and eventually lift at the edge.
  • Judging a color match on wet base in booth light. Nearly every finish shifts as it cures and gloss develops, and matches confirmed wet are the most common cause of a repair that has to be done twice.

Technician note

The question I ask before I mix anything is where does this stop. On a car I have a door edge and I am done thinking. On a thirty eight foot fifth wheel I might have to walk twelve feet to find an awning rail, and that means the customer is buying twelve feet of clear to fix a scuff the size of a hand. Owners find that hard to hear until I show them a repair somebody else stopped mid panel on a unit two bays over, and then it takes about four seconds.

Appendix: questions and answers

Why do you paint well beyond the damaged area on a spot repair?
Because a hard edge between new and old paint is visible and a faded transition is not. New color is stepped outward into the existing finish until the two merge. On a coach with no panel gaps, the clear then has to travel to the nearest rail or body line, which sets the size of the job.
Can I use touch up paint on a metallic RV finish instead?
On a solid color, small chips can be improved that way. On any metallic or pearl it will read as a dark spot, because brushed paint cannot orient the flake the way a sprayed film does. The dab may be less noticeable than the chip, but it will not disappear the way a blend does.
What is a spray out card and why does my repair need one?
A test panel sprayed with your mixed color at the exact gun setup used for the job, then dried and cleared. It gets held against the coach in daylight. Colors shift as they cure, and metallics change with flake orientation, so a card is the only honest way to confirm a match before spraying the unit.
Will a blended repair start showing after a couple of years?
Not if the clear ended at a genuine break. What does show over time is a repair where clear was stopped in open surface, because that edge collects dirt and eventually lifts. Blends terminated at a rail or a molding age at the same rate as the paint around them.
Why does my pearl coach cost more for the same size repair?
Because a tri coat pearl gets its color from a mid coat whose appearance depends on how many passes are applied. Matching it requires a let down panel showing two, three and four coats so the correct film build can be identified. That is extra hours before anything is sprayed on the vehicle.
How long does a blended spot repair keep the unit here?
Two to six shop days for most jobs. The spraying is quick. What fills the calendar is body repair under the paint, spray out card confirmation, the clear coat cure window and the polish afterwards. Rushing the cure to save a day costs gloss a week later.
