What is post refinish paint correction on new clear coat?
Correction levels a freshly sprayed finish. Orange peel, dust nibs, tracers and small runs are sanded flat through progressively finer grits, then compounded and polished back to full gloss. Rancho Santa Margarita owners get this as the last stage of refinish work at our Yorba Linda shop, after the clear has cured.

Last verified
Clear coat does not leave a spray gun flat. It leaves as droplets that flow together, and how completely they flow determines the texture you end up with. Even a well sprayed panel carries some orange peel, and on a body the size of a coach there will also be a nib or two, a tracer where a sanding scratch telegraphed through, and occasionally a run at a vertical edge. All of that is normal and all of it is correctable.
This page is only about a fresh finish. The film is thick, its history is known because we sprayed it, and there is material available to level. Working an old, ultraviolet damaged surface is a completely different operation with a different risk profile and a different rate, and it belongs to the detail department rather than here.
What correction means on a finish we just sprayed
Clear coat leaves the gun as atomized droplets and then flows together on the panel. How completely they merge before the film starts to set determines the texture, and some texture is present on every sprayed finish including the ones that come off a factory line. Correction is the process of removing that texture mechanically so reflections in the panel are straight rather than wavy.
The important context is that this is new film with known history. We sprayed it, we know the product, we know the film build, and there is material available to remove. That is what makes aggressive levelling a reasonable thing to do. None of those conditions apply to a fifteen year old surface, which is why an aged finish is a different job with a different rate and a different set of risks.
Reading the defects before touching the panel
Each defect tells you where it came from and how deep it goes. Orange peel is in the clear and levels out predictably. A dust nib sits proud of the surface and often comes off with a nib file and a small polish, no full panel cut required. A run has real thickness and gets blocked flat before anything else happens on that panel.
Tracers are the exception and they are the reason we inspect before cutting rather than after. Fine straight lines running in one direction are sanding scratches from the preparation stage, and they live below the color. Removing clear above them exposes them further. When we find tracers, the honest answer is that the area needs to be prepared properly and recoated, not polished harder.

Why cure time comes before any abrasive
A clear coat that is dry to the touch is not finished. Solvent continues migrating out of the film for days or weeks depending on product, film build and temperature, and a bake cycle accelerates that but does not always complete it. Polishing a film that is still releasing solvent produces a beautiful surface that dulls as the remaining solvent leaves, which is dieback.
That is why cure verification sits ahead of the abrasive on every job here, even when a delivery date is uncomfortable. Correction performed inside the cure window is work that has to be done again, at somebody's expense, and the owner has already driven the unit home by then. Two days of patience at the front is cheaper than a full recorrection at the back.
Before you proceed
If a shop offers to cut and polish a repaint the day after it leaves the booth, ask what the product's cure schedule says. Fast delivery on uncured clear is a gloss problem you will discover after pickup.
The grit progression and why steps cannot be skipped
Levelling works by replacing a large defect with a smaller, uniform scratch pattern, then replacing that with a finer one, and so on until the remaining pattern is fine enough to be removed by compound. Start at 1500 on texture, step to 2000, then 3000, and each stage exists specifically to erase the marks the previous stage made. Skip a grade and the marks from the coarser paper survive into the polish, which is why a shortcut ends up costing a second pass.
Keeping the cut flat matters as much as the grit. On a large panel a hand alone follows the texture instead of removing it, so blocks and interface pads are used to bridge the low areas and take material off the high ones. Around edges and crowns the approach reverses: hands only, minimal pressure, and often tape over the highest point to keep any machine well away from it.

Foam cutting pads compared with finishing pads
The two pads do opposite jobs. A cutting pad is firmer and more open, it holds an aggressive compound, and its purpose is to erase the sanding pattern quickly. It leaves its own faint marks behind, which is expected and is why it is never the last step. Used alone, it produces a surface that looks glossy under fluorescent light and shows curved trails the moment the unit rolls into the sun.
A finishing pad is softer, used with a fine polish and lower speed, and its job is to remove what the cutting pad left. Pad cleanliness matters enormously here, since a finishing pad that has picked up compound residue behaves like a cutting pad and reintroduces the problem it was meant to solve. Final inspection therefore happens outdoors in direct light, not under the booth.
What post refinish correction costs
This is billed at the body and paint rate because it is refinish work performed by refinish technicians on a finish that came out of our booth. The range reflects area more than anything else: de-nibbing and polishing one repaired panel is a few hours, while levelling and polishing a full coach body after a complete repaint is a job measured in days.
Paint supplies bill per paint hour. Sales tax applies to materials and labor is not taxed. Where correction is part of a larger refinish, it is shown as its own line rather than folded into paint time, so you can see what the finishing stage actually costs. The written estimate is $150 and is credited in full against an authorized repair.
On cost
If your unit has an older, chalked finish rather than fresh clear, this is the wrong page and the wrong rate. Oxidation work runs at the $95 detail rate and we would rather route you there.
Units we perform correction on
Full body painted coaches account for most of this work simply because they have the most surface area, and a forty foot side shows texture more obviously than any small panel ever will. Luxury units and bus conversions are usually corrected end to end after a repaint, because a partially levelled body is visible in exactly the way the owner was trying to eliminate.
Commercial and factory finished vehicles come through for a narrower version of the same service. A Sprinter or a box truck that has had a panel refinished needs that panel levelled to agree with the factory texture on either side of it, which is a matching exercise as much as a gloss one. Making one panel flatter than its neighbors is its own kind of mismatch.
Insurance, finish quality and the last stage of a repair
Correction on a repaired panel is a normal part of a refinish operation and appears on properly written estimates. Where it becomes a discussion is on a large loss where an adjuster has allowed refinish time but not the finishing stage, which produces a repair that is technically complete and visibly rougher than the panels beside it.
The practical answer is scope written up front. When the surrounding finish is a factory texture, matching it requires levelling and polishing the new work, and saying so at estimate is far easier than raising it after the fact. Photographs of the adjacent panels alongside the repaired one settle the question quickly in most cases.
On the claim
Ask that finish work be listed as its own operation on the estimate. Refinish time alone gets a panel painted. It does not get the panel matched to the texture of the paint beside it.

How the work runs
Inspect and classify the defects
30 to 90 minutes
Texture, nibs, tracers, runs and dry areas each need a different starting point. We mark them on the panel and decide which are correctable by cutting and which require the area to be recoated, because not everything in a finish can be polished out.
Confirm the finish is ready to cut
Cure time, not billed labor
The coating gets its bake and its cure window before anything abrasive touches it. This is the step most often skipped when a delivery date is tight, and it is the direct cause of a finish that looks superb at pickup and dull a fortnight later.
Level with graded wet sanding
1 to 10 hours
Cutting begins at the coarsest grit the defect actually requires, commonly 1500 on texture and finer for isolated nibs, then steps through 2000 and 3000 so each grade removes the marks left by the previous one. Blocks keep the cut flat on large surfaces.
Compound with a cutting pad
1 to 6 hours
A foam cutting pad and a heavy cut compound remove the sanding pattern. Speed, pressure and pad cleanliness are all controlled, and edges and crowns are worked by hand where the film is thinnest and a machine would go through.
Polish and verify
1 to 5 hours
A clean finishing pad and a fine polish remove any compounding trails and bring back depth. The surface is wiped down and inspected in direct sunlight as well as under shop lighting, since holograms hide well under a booth and appear immediately outdoors.

- Defects that live below the clear cannot be corrected here and require the area to be recoated.

What you will notice first
- A finish with visible texture in reflections, so straight lines in a reflection look wavy
- Small hard specks you can feel with a fingertip standing above the surface
- Fine straight lines showing through the clear in one direction across a panel
- A sag or a run at the bottom edge of a vertical surface
- Dull patches where an area of clear went on drier than the rest
- Gloss that was correct at delivery and dropped noticeably a week later
- A newly painted panel that is glossier than the panels either side of it
- Small craters scattered through the clear over the heaviest areas
How this fails, and what we do about it

Why it happened
- Clear atomization and flow, which always leaves some texture, more when air pressure or product temperature is off
- Airborne particles landing in wet clear, which is minimized by a downdraft booth and never eliminated entirely
- Sanding scratches from too coarse a grit in preparation, which telegraph through the finish as tracers once gloss develops
- Excessive film build at a vertical edge causing a sag, which is a spraying decision rather than a product fault
- Solvent trapped by heavy application, producing craters as it escapes through a skinned surface
- Polishing a finish before it has finished releasing solvent, which lets gloss drop back over the following weeks

What not to try yourself
- Cutting a fresh finish before it has cured. The surface will look excellent for a week and then die back as solvent continues to leave the film underneath.
- Running a rotary at an edge or a body crown. Clear is thinnest exactly there, and a burn through means recoating the panel rather than polishing it.
- Starting at a coarse grit because it is faster. Every grade you skip on the way down leaves marks the next stage cannot remove, and you end up sanding the panel twice.
- Trying to polish out tracers. Sanding scratches that live below the color are only made more visible by removing clear above them, and the panel has to be prepared and recoated properly.

I have done it, everybody in this trade has done it, and the phone call two weeks later is always the same: it has gone flat. So now the rule here is that the finish gets its bake and it gets its window, and if that pushes delivery by two days then it pushes delivery by two days. I would rather have that conversation on Monday than the other one at the end of the month.
Appendix: questions and answers
- Is orange peel in a new paint job a defect?
- Some texture is normal on any sprayed finish, including factory ones. Clear leaves the gun as droplets and how completely they flow together sets the texture. Correction removes it mechanically. What is not normal is heavy texture across a panel, which usually points to gun setup or product temperature.
- Is this the same as oxidation removal on an older RV?
- No. This levels fresh clear coat that we sprayed, where film thickness is known and there is material to remove. Oxidation removal works a degraded surface with unknown remaining film and different risks entirely. That work is done by the detail department at $95 per hour rather than at the body and paint rate.
- How long after painting can the finish be cut and polished?
- After the bake and the product's cure window, which varies by system, film build and shop temperature. Cutting earlier gives a surface that looks excellent at pickup and dulls over the following weeks as trapped solvent escapes. We verify cure before any abrasive touches the coating.
- What happens if the clear is cut through during correction?
- The panel has to be recoated. Clear is thinnest at edges and body crowns, so those areas are taped or worked by hand and never put under a machine at pressure. Burn through is a preventable outcome and the prevention is discipline about where a polisher is allowed to go.
- Can polishing remove the fine straight lines showing through my paint?
- No. Those are tracers, which are sanding scratches from the preparation stage living underneath the color. Removing clear above them only makes them more visible. The area has to be sanded properly and recoated. Any shop promising to polish tracers out is describing something that cannot happen.
- Should a repaired panel be polished flatter than the panels beside it?
- No, it should match them. Factory finishes carry their own texture, and a repaired panel levelled to perfect flatness next to two textured neighbors reads as a mismatch just as clearly as a color difference would. We correct to agree with the adjacent surfaces rather than to an absolute.
