How is custom paint and graphics work done on an RV?

Graphics on a coach look like a design problem and behave like a geometry problem. Draw a sweeping stripe on a flat elevation of the unit, transfer it to the actual body, and it will not be the shape you drew. The sidewall leans in toward the roof, the roof crowns, the front cap curves away in two directions at once, and a line that measures perfectly straight will read as a sag from the far end of the lot.
So the layout happens on the vehicle. Fine line tape, a lot of walking backward, and a photograph from thirty feet that gets sent to the owner for approval before any color is mixed. Everything after that is a sequence: mask, spray, flash, demask, repeat, and then clear the whole panel together so nobody can feel where one color stops and the next begins.
Laying out a graphic on a body that curves in three directions
A coach sidewall is not a rectangle. It leans inward as it rises, which is tumblehome, and the roof crowns across its width. The front cap curves away in two axes simultaneously and the rear cap does something similar with different proportions. Any graphic that crosses from side to cap has to negotiate all of that, and the geometry defeats a flat drawing every time.
The practical consequence is that layout is a sighting exercise rather than a measuring one. Tape goes up, somebody walks thirty feet back, the line gets moved, and that repeats until it reads correctly from the angles people will actually see the vehicle from. Only then does anybody get out a tape measure, and that is to record what was decided so it can be restored, not to determine it in the first place.
Fine line tape, plotter cut masks and edge quality
Fine line tape handles the sweeping curves because it will bend without lifting and it leaves a clean edge in the paint. Wider masking follows behind it to protect the surrounding surface. Where a shape has to repeat, on both sides of the unit or across several vehicles in a fleet, a plotter cut mask does it accurately and identically instead of relying on somebody's hand twice.
Edge quality then comes down to two habits. Every tape edge gets burnished down hard so nothing can creep under it. And before the new color goes on, a light pass of the color underneath is sprayed along the boundary, which seals the tape edge with a material that will not show if it bleeds. That trick is why some graphic edges look like they were printed and others look feathered.

Sequencing colors, flash times and when masks come off
Each color in a scheme is its own cycle of masking, spraying, flashing and demasking, which is why the number of colors drives the price far more than the size of the graphic. A two color stripe is one round of masking. A five color scheme with a fade in it is four or five rounds, each with its own preparation and its own waiting.
Timing on demask matters more than people expect. Pull tape too early and the paint is soft enough to string or slump at the edge. Pull it too late and cured film can tear along the boundary and take a chip with it. There is a window, it moves with product and shop temperature, and knowing it is most of what separates a crisp scheme from one that needs touching in.
Candy, pearl and airbrushed fades
Candy colors are translucent and get their depth from a metallic ground beneath them. Depth therefore depends on total coverage, so a candy panel has to be sprayed with a consistent pass pattern from one end to the other. Stop and restart in the middle and the overlap shows as a band. It also means candy cannot be spot repaired, which is worth knowing before choosing it for a vehicle that lives in storage lots.
Pearl mid coats behave similarly but with more latitude, and airbrushed fades add a different discipline entirely. A fade has no tape line to hide behind, so its softness is produced by gun distance, trigger control and a great deal of practice. Those areas are also where a scheme most often gets adjusted after the client sees it, so we build a sample before committing to the coach.
Reproducing a factory scheme nobody sells anymore
A large share of this work is not custom at all. It is putting a factory scheme back on a coach after the decal package was discontinued, which happens well before the coaches wearing it come off the road. Owners want their unit to look like itself again, and a sprayed reproduction is generally better than the original because it can be cleared over and polished rather than sitting on top of the paint as film.
The method is measurement from photographs. We take images of the intact side of the unit, or work from the owner's photographs and sales literature, and derive stripe widths, break positions and angles from known reference points on the body. Then the layout gets taped and checked against the original imagery from the same viewing angle before anything is sprayed.
Note
Photograph your unit before any body damage is repaired if a graphic crosses the damaged area. Reproducing a scheme is far easier from your own square on images than from a general web search.
Clearing over graphics and burying the film build
Layered color builds thickness. A five color scheme has more material where the colors overlap than where the base is bare, and if you clear only the graphic you end up with a panel you can read with your fingertips. The fix is clearing the whole panel at a film build sufficient to bury the steps, then cutting and polishing the surface flat.
This is also what makes sprayed graphics outlast applied vinyl by a wide margin. Under clear, the graphic is protected by the same ultraviolet absorbers as the rest of the finish, it can be polished with the surrounding paint, and it has no exposed edge for water or dirt to work at. Vinyl on top of paint is always a film with a perimeter, and perimeters are where things fail.
What custom paint and graphics work costs
Color count is the main driver, followed by whether the scheme wraps onto the caps and whether any candy, pearl or fade work is involved. A two color stripe package along one side is a manageable job. A full body scheme that wraps both caps, uses a candy over a metallic ground and carries airbrushed transitions is at the top of this range and occasionally beyond it.
Paint supplies bill per paint hour and body supplies per body hour, parts carry standard markup, and sales tax applies to parts and materials while labor does not. Disposal applies where solvents and catalyzed coatings are involved. A written estimate is $150 and is credited in full against an authorized repair, and for design work we quote the layout stage separately so you can approve a scheme before committing to the paint.
On cost
Adding one more color to a scheme is not a small change. It is another complete round of masking, spraying, flashing and demasking across the whole layout, and it prices accordingly.
Units we lay graphics on
Coaches with full body paint are the natural home for this work, particularly diesel pushers and luxury units where the original scheme was sprayed rather than applied. Bus conversions are a category of their own, because those owners frequently want something genuinely custom rather than a factory reproduction, and the body has the uninterrupted length to carry it.
Commercial and mobile business vehicles come in for identity work. A food truck, a branded van or a mobile clinic is a rolling advertisement and the graphics have to match a brand standard exactly. Those jobs are scheduled around operating days, since a vehicle in a booth is a vehicle not working, and we sequence the masking rounds to keep the total time in the building as short as the process allows.
Insurance and custom graphic work
Custom paint is frequently underinsured, and owners find that out at the worst possible moment. A standard policy values the vehicle, not the eight thousand dollars of sprayed scheme somebody added afterwards, so a covered loss that damages a custom panel can be settled at a figure that does not begin to reproduce the work. Coverage for that has to be arranged in advance and documented.
When a covered loss does damage a graphic, reproduction is a legitimate line item and it is quoted from the recorded layout measurements rather than estimated. This is one of the strongest arguments for keeping the layout documentation: without it, an adjuster has a photograph and a shop has a guess, and the two rarely arrive at the same number.

Keep dated photographs and the paid invoice for any custom paint work with your policy documents. Reproducing a scheme is a documented cost when the paperwork exists and an argument when it does not.

How the work runs
Collect references and design to the body
2 to 10 hours
Brand standards, original photographs or a concept sketch get translated into a scheme that suits the actual proportions of the unit. A design that works on a twenty four foot trailer rarely scales onto a forty foot coach without rethinking the sweep and the stripe weights.
Tape the layout full scale
3 to 12 hours
Fine line tape goes on the vehicle and the layout is walked, viewed from both ends of the lot, and adjusted. Lines are set by eye rather than by ruler, because the body curvature will make a measured line look wrong from any real viewing distance.
Get approval and record positions
1 to 3 hours
The taped scheme is photographed from thirty feet and sent for approval. Once agreed, every line position is measured and written down, so the layout can be restored exactly if tape has to come off during preparation.
Mask and spray in sequence
4 to 25 hours
Each color is a cycle: mask, burnish, seal the edge with the underlying color, spray, flash, demask. The order is planned so lighter colors and larger areas go first and detail work builds on top, which minimizes the number of masking rounds.
Clear, level and polish the whole panel
4 to 15 hours
Clear goes over the entire surface, not just the graphic, at a film build that buries the layered color. It is then cut and polished flat so the finished panel is smooth end to end and no color change can be felt by hand.

- A 50 percent deposit is taken at authorization on any job over $2,000, with an additional 25 percent when parts arrive on any job over $10,000. Final balance is due at pickup.
- A two color stripe package on one side of a trailer sits near the bottom of this range.
- A full body multi color scheme with candy, pearl and airbrushed fades sits at or above the top.
- Each additional color in a scheme adds a full mask, spray, flash and demask cycle, and that is the main cost driver.
How estimating is billed
- Written repair estimate: $150, credited in full against an authorized repair.
- In depth diagnostic, scan and programming: $285 per hour, one hour minimum, credited in full against an authorized repair.
- In shop pre purchase inspection: $400 to $1,200 depending on unit size and systems count.
- Insurance walk ins are accepted during posted hours. All inspection and estimating work is performed in shop at the Yorba Linda facility.

What not to try yourself
- Laying out a stripe with a chalk line and a tape measure alone. Body curvature will make a mathematically straight line read as a sag, and the error only appears once you step back.
- Spraying a color against tape without sealing the edge first. The sealing pass with the underlying color is what stops bleed, and skipping it turns a crisp line into a fuzzy one.
- Spot repairing a candy panel. Candy depth depends on total coverage, so any correction has to go back to the nearest full break in the design or the patch will read darker.
- Clearing only the graphic instead of the whole panel. That leaves an edge you can feel and a boundary that will collect dirt and eventually lift.

There is a spot on a coach sidewall about two thirds of the way back where the tumblehome really starts to work on you, and a line that is dead straight on the tape measure will droop right there to the eye. So I bend it. Then I measure what I did and write it down, because if that tape comes off during prep I am not doing all this again from scratch.
Appendix: questions and answers
- Are sprayed graphics better than vinyl on an RV?
- For longevity, yes. Sprayed graphics sit under the clear coat, so they get the same ultraviolet protection as the paint, can be polished with it, and have no exposed edge to lift. Vinyl is faster and cheaper up front, and it is a film with a perimeter, which is always where film starts failing.
- Why can the graphic not be designed on a computer instead?
- A design is drawn on a flat elevation and the vehicle is not flat. Tumblehome, roof crown and cap curvature all bend a line, so a shape that is correct on screen reads as a sag or a rise on the body. The computer design is the starting point and the tape layout on the vehicle is the decision.
- Can you recreate a factory decal package that is no longer available?
- Usually yes. We derive stripe widths, break positions and angles from photographs of the intact side of your unit or from your own images, then tape the layout on the body and compare it against the reference from the same viewing angle before spraying anything.
- Why does adding one more color raise the price so much?
- Because each color is a complete cycle: mask the whole layout, burnish every edge, seal the boundary, spray, flash, then demask at the right moment. That cycle takes hours regardless of how much surface the color actually covers, so the count of colors drives the cost more than the size of the graphic.
- Will I be able to feel the edges of painted graphics?
- Not when the whole panel is cleared and levelled. Layered color does build thickness, so clear goes over the entire surface at a film build sufficient to bury it, then gets cut and polished flat. Clearing only the graphic itself is what leaves a ridge you can find with a fingertip.
- What happens if a candy painted panel gets damaged later?
- It goes back to the nearest full break in the design rather than being spot repaired. Candy is translucent and its depth comes from total coverage, so a patch in the middle of a panel reads darker than the surrounding area no matter how well it is matched. That is worth knowing before choosing candy.
