What goes into a full unit repaint on an RV or commercial vehicle?
A full unit repaint strips the body to bare surface, corrects it, seals it, and recoats it in a downdraft booth. Owners usually picture a repaint as a week of spraying. It is closer to the opposite. On a forty foot coach, the spray gun accounts for a single digit percentage of the hours, and everything else is taking the unit apart, making the surface flat, masking what stays on, and putting it all back together with fresh sealant so it does not leak at pickup.
The reason a coach repaint is a category of its own is scale and geometry. A car has doors, hoods and fenders with gaps between them, and those gaps are where a painter hides a break. An RV sidewall is one continuous surface forty feet long. Every decision about where color starts and stops has to be designed on the vehicle itself.
Why a coach repaint is not a larger car repaint
A car body is a set of removable panels with gaps between them. Those gaps are functional for a painter, because a color change or a repair can end inside a jamb where the eye never questions it. An RV sidewall has none of that. It is a single bonded surface running the length of the unit, and the only breaks are the ones somebody creates with tape.
That changes the planning entirely. The color layout is designed on the vehicle before disassembly, using fine line tape and a look from thirty feet back, because a line that seems right at arm's length can visibly bow from the corner of the lot. A coach side has tumblehome and a crowned roof radius, so a straight line on a flat plan does not stay straight on the body.
Stripping, correcting and getting the shell flat
The first real question on any repaint is what the existing coating is doing. A finish that is dull but sound can be abraded and coated over. A finish that is peeling, checking or lifting has to come off, because new material bonded to failing material fails at the same rate. That determination is made panel by panel with a guide coat and an abrasive, not from across the lot.
Old graphics leave a step. Vinyl that sat on a body for twelve years protected the paint under it while everything around it wore, so pulling it reveals an adhesive shadow and a measurable height difference. That step has to be blocked out or it will telegraph through and read as a ghost of the old scheme in low sun.

Masking, tape lines and where color stops
Every color break on a coach is a taped line, so every one of them is a design decision with a permanent consequence. Lines that follow a body swage or land at a molding are forgiving, because the eye already expects a change there. Lines drawn across open sheet are unforgiving, and any deviation in the tape run shows up as a wave from a distance even when it measures straight.
Masking also has to survive a bake cycle. Tape that lifts or bleeds at booth temperature turns a clean break into a day of correction, so premium tapes rated for the heat go on every edge that matters. Anything not being coated gets covered properly rather than tucked, since overspray on a windshield or a lens is a separate cleanup job nobody quoted.
Sealer, base and clear on a body this size
Sealer earns its place on a large body more than on any car. Preparation across forty feet inevitably leaves a mix of substrates: original coating, primed repairs, filled areas and bare spots. Base coat sprayed over that mixture without a sealer will hold out differently on each one, which reads as subtle patchiness in the finished color. A sealer gives the color one consistent surface to sit on.
Base and clear then go on with flash times respected, which on a unit this size means the painter is walking the length of the coach continuously and the schedule has to allow for it. Film build is controlled deliberately. More clear is not more protection past a point, and heavy application on a vertical surface risks both runs and trapped solvent.
Booth time, bake cycle and solvent pop
Downdraft airflow moves air from the ceiling down past the body and out through the floor, so overspray travels away from wet coating rather than across it. On a vehicle with this much vertical surface that airflow direction is the difference between a finish you polish lightly and one you sand entirely. Painting a coach in a cross draft space or outdoors puts dust into clear you cannot recover without starting over.
The bake cycle drives solvent out under controlled heat. Get film build or flash times wrong and some of that solvent stays trapped under a skinned surface, then forces its way out as small craters. That is solvent pop, and polishing does not fix it. The area has to be sanded flat and recoated.
Before you proceed
Heavy coats are the single most common cause of a repaint failing early. Coating that traps solvent looks correct on delivery day and starts craters or cracking months later.
Reassembly and the parts that do not go back on
Some hardware does not survive removal. Twelve year old clearance lens sets go brittle, badge adhesive gives up, and molding stock that has shrunk will not sit down again on a body that has just been made flat. Those items get identified during disassembly and quoted then, so nobody is choosing between a new lens set and a delivery date at the end of the job.
Reassembly is also the leak prevention stage. Every window, light, rail and vent that came off goes back on fresh butyl and fresh lap sealant, and roof edge terminations in the work area get resealed. A repaint that introduces a water path has traded a cosmetic problem for a structural one, and that is the worst possible outcome on a job of this size.
What a full unit repaint costs
The spread on this page is driven by three things: length of the unit, how much hardware comes off, and how many colors are in the scheme. A single color repaint on a twenty six foot trailer with a handful of lights is not the same job as a three color full body scheme on a forty five foot diesel pusher with bay doors and mirrors.
Paint supplies bill per paint hour and body supplies per body hour, parts carry standard markup, and sales tax applies to parts and materials while labor does not. Deposits apply at 50 percent above $2,000, with a further 25 percent due at parts arrival above $10,000. The written estimate is $150 and is credited in full against an authorized repair.
On cost
When comparing two repaint quotes, compare disassembly line items rather than totals. A quote with no hardware removal on it is a quote for masking around everything, and those two jobs are not competing products.
Units we repaint at this facility
Coaches are the core of this work: Class A gas and diesel bodies, bus conversions and luxury units carrying full body schemes that failed after a decade of outdoor storage. Those jobs are usually about restoring a finish rather than changing it, and the owner almost always wants the original scheme reproduced faithfully, down to the stripe widths and the exact positions of the breaks.
Commercial and fleet work is the other half. Box trucks, shuttle buses and Sprinter based service vehicles come through for rebrands, and those are scheduled around the operator's calendar because a painted vehicle is a vehicle not earning. Our indoor bays take a forty five foot unit, which is the practical requirement for keeping a job like this on a predictable schedule regardless of weather or wind.
Insurance and a full unit repaint
An elective repaint is not a claim. Fading, clear coat failure and a desire for a new scheme are owner expenses, and every carrier we deal with treats them that way without much discussion. Nothing about that changes because a covered repair happens to be in progress on the same unit at the same time, which is a point worth understanding before anybody calls an adjuster hoping otherwise.
Where the two do interact is scope on a large covered loss. When a collision requires several adjacent panels and the surrounding finish will not match, how far the refinish must extend is a legitimate discussion with the adjuster, sometimes running to a full side or a full unit. That is decided on documented color readings and photographs at estimate, not by argument afterwards.
On the claim
If you are considering an elective repaint and also have an open claim, keep the two scopes separate on paper. Mixed estimates get returned by adjusters and cost weeks.

- The unit is sealed for holdout, coated in filtered downdraft air, and baked under controlled heat rather than air dried in a bay.
- Reassembly on fresh sealant
- Every component that came off goes back with new butyl, new lap sealant and new fasteners, and the roof edge terminations are resealed.
- Graphics reproduction or a new schemewhere applicable
- Factory graphics are reproduced, replaced or redesigned, and that decision is priced separately from the base finish.
How the work runs
Design the scheme and the breaks
2 to 8 hours
Before anything comes apart, the color layout is decided on the vehicle. Where each color starts and stops, which surfaces are gloss and which are satin, and how the breaks relate to the body lines. On a unit with no panel gaps this is a drawing exercise done with tape on the actual coach.
Strip the body
10 to 40 hours
Hardware, lights, rails, moldings and graphics come off. Adhesive residue is chemically removed. This stage regularly takes two to four full days on a large coach and it is the stage that separates a repaint that lasts from one that starts lifting at the edges in year two.
Correct and prepare the surface
16 to 90 hours
Failed coating comes off, repairs and old graphic steps are blocked flat under a guide coat, and the entire shell is abraded to a uniform key. Preparation is the largest block of hours on this page and it determines everything visible in the finished result.
Mask, seal, base and clear
8 to 45 hours
The unit is masked to the designed breaks with fine line tape, sealed for uniform holdout, then based and cleared in the booth with flash times respected between coats. Film build is controlled deliberately, because heavy is not better and traps solvent.
Bake, reassemble and inspect
10 to 45 hours
The finish is baked, given its cure window, then de-nibbed and polished where needed. Hardware goes back on fresh sealant, roof edges are resealed, and the unit is inspected under booth light and again in daylight before release.

How estimating is billed
- Written repair estimate: $150, credited in full against an authorized repair.
- In depth diagnostic, scan and programming: $285 per hour, one hour minimum, credited in full against an authorized repair.
- In shop pre purchase inspection: $400 to $1,200 depending on unit size and systems count.
- Insurance walk ins are accepted during posted hours. All inspection and estimating work is performed in shop at the Yorba Linda facility.

- Fleet rebranding, where new graphics were applied over old ones and the ghost of the previous livery shows through in raking light
- Original film build that was too heavy, trapping solvent in the coating and producing cracking and pop years later
- An owner buying a sound used coach with a tired finish and choosing to reset the exterior in one pass

What not to try yourself
- Painting a coach outdoors or under a carport. Airborne dust settles into wet clear across forty feet of vertical surface and there is no salvaging it afterwards short of sanding the whole thing.
- Masking around rails and lights to save disassembly hours. The coating terminates at an edge, moisture gets under it, and the job fails at its perimeter first.
- Applying heavy coats to get coverage in fewer passes. Excess film traps solvent, which shows up as pop and later as cracking, and correcting it costs more than the passes saved.
- Skipping the reseal of roof edge terminations after reassembly. A repaint that introduces a leak has converted a cosmetic project into a delamination repair.

That single question tells you everything, because masking around a rail is fast and it is also exactly where the job will let go in eighteen months. I would rather lose the estimate than paint up to a rail.
Appendix: questions and answers
- How many weeks does a full RV repaint take?
- Two to six shop weeks for most units. Preparation dominates the schedule: disassembly, coating removal, levelling old graphic steps and abrading the whole shell. Booth time and the bake are a small fraction of it. Reassembly on fresh sealant then adds days that owners rarely account for.
- Do the lights and rails really have to come off to repaint?
- Yes, if the finish is meant to last. Coating that stops at a masked edge gives moisture and dirt a place to get underneath, and failures on a repaint almost always start at those perimeters. Removing hardware lets the coating run under the edge and lets us reseal everything on reassembly.
- Can you reproduce my coach's original paint scheme exactly?
- In most cases yes. We photograph and measure the existing layout before disassembly, record stripe widths and break locations, and rebuild the scheme from those measurements. Where a sprayed graphic used a discontinued effect, we spray out samples and get your approval on a panel before it goes on the coach.
- Is single stage paint a reasonable choice on a full unit?
- On a solid color with a budget constraint, it can be. It sprays in fewer steps and costs less in material. The tradeoffs are dieback in the weeks after delivery and less long term ultraviolet holdout, which matters on a unit stored outdoors. For metallics and pearls, base coat clear coat is the practical choice.
- What changes if I want a completely different color than the original?
- Coverage and edges. A dramatic color change means everything that shows must be coated, including door jambs, compartment openings and the underside of removable panels, or the old color reads every time something opens. That adds disassembly and booth time, and it is priced separately at estimate.
- When can I wash and wax a freshly repainted coach?
- Wash gently with plain water and a soft mitt after the first week. Hold off on wax or any sealing product for at least thirty days. New coating continues releasing solvent after it feels dry, and sealing the surface early traps it, which costs you gloss you already paid for.
