A utility or cargo trailer is the simplest thing on this site and it is also the one that works hardest. No plumbing, no propane, no house electrical, no slide rooms and no laminated sidewalls. A frame, axles, a deck or a floor, a gate or a door, and lighting. That is the whole vehicle.
Which means the repair list is short and entirely mechanical, and it is driven by duty cycle rather than by age. A landscape trailer that is loaded and unloaded twice a day accumulates more gate cycles in a year than a recreational trailer sees in its life.
Duty cycle rather than age decides everything
A recreational trailer is judged by its year. A working trailer should be judged by its cycles. A landscape trailer whose gate is dropped and raised four times a day accumulates more than a thousand gate cycles a year, and the spring assist, hinge pins and gate frame all wear on that clock rather than on a calendar.
That is why two identical trailers of the same age can be in completely different condition, and why we ask about use before quoting. A gate on a trailer used twice a month is a different component from the same gate on a crew truck's trailer, even though the part number matches.

The gate is heavy and the assist is doing the work
A ramp gate on a mid size utility trailer weighs well over a hundred pounds, and the reason one person can raise it is a spring or torsion assist carrying most of that. When the assist fades or breaks, nothing appears broken: the gate still works, it is simply now being lifted entirely by the operator.
The damage follows quickly. Lifting a gate without assist bends the gate frame, wears the hinge pins unevenly and occasionally injures somebody. Replacing an assist is inexpensive and replacing a bent gate is not, so it is worth treating the assist as a scheduled item on a working trailer.
Before you proceed
If the ramp gate suddenly feels heavy, stop using it and have the assist checked. Continuing to lift it manually bends the gate frame and wears the hinge line unevenly.
Fenders are brackets, and people stand on them
On an open trailer the fender and wheel well are welded to the frame, and in practice they get stood on, leaned against, loaded over and occasionally driven across. None of that was in the design brief. They are brackets taking repeated point loads in the part of the trailer that also collects the most road spray.
So the weld cracks and then corrodes, in that order, and the corrosion hides the crack. When we repair one we clean back to bare metal, address the weld properly and gusset the mount if the trailer's use calls for it, because putting the same bracket back the same way produces the same crack.
Rot follows the crossmembers
Timber decking sits on steel crossmembers, and every line where wood meets steel traps water. So rot on an open trailer deck is not random: it appears in stripes following the crossmember pattern underneath, which is also the pattern nobody can see from above until a board fails.
Enclosed trailers do the same thing at the plywood to crossmember contact lines, with the addition of wherever a load has punctured the floor surface. We probe along the crossmember lines rather than across the deck, and we replace to the full width of affected boards rather than patching, because a patch at a crossmember line simply moves the trap.
It is almost never the bulb
Intermittent trailer lighting is the most frequently misdiagnosed fault we see on working trailers. Bulbs get replaced, sockets get cleaned, connectors get sprayed, and the fault comes back. The reason is that a great many trailers use the frame as the ground path and the coupler as the connection to the tow vehicle.
That joint is greased, painted, corroded and constantly moving. It works fine until it does not, and it fails intermittently by nature. Running a dedicated ground wire from the trailer's lighting circuits back to the connector cures faults that have defeated several people, and it is a short job.
Rates and scheduling a working fleet
Frame, welding, gate, deck and body work bills at $210 per hour with body supplies at $5 per body hour and paint supplies at $55 per paint hour. Wiring and hardware work is $260 per hour. A written estimate is $150, credited in full against an authorized repair.

What typically goes wrong on this vehicle
Ramp gate spring assist failing and the gate becoming unmanageable
A ramp gate weighs one hundred and fifty pounds or more and is raised by hand with a spring or torsion assist doing most of the work. Those assists are cycled several times a day on a working trailer and they fade or break. Once the assist is gone the operator is lifting the whole gate, which damages the hinge line and occasionally the operator.

On an open trailer the fender and wheel well are welded to the frame and people step on them, lean loads against them and occasionally drive a mower wheel over them. It is a bracket taking repeated point loads it was never rated for, in the location that also collects road spray, so the weld cracks and then corrodes.

Timber decking on an open trailer sits on steel crossmembers, and water is trapped at every contact line between wood and steel. Intermittent lights on a trailer with good bulbs and good wiring are nearly always this, and fitting a dedicated ground wire cures a fault nobody could find.

The roof sheet is captured along each side by a rail and a row of rivets, and that rail is the only thing between the load inside and the weather. Rivets work loose from the drumming of a large flat roof panel at highway speed, and the sealant under the rail hardens, so water enters along a line rather than at a point.

Will it fit in the shop?
These are the fastest units through our building and they need almost nothing special. An open trailer goes on a lift for frame, axle and wiring work, an enclosed trailer up to twenty four feet fits any bay with room to open the ramp door fully inside, and gate work is done at bench height with the trailer supported so the gate can be cycled repeatedly. For operators running several trailers we schedule them together so a fleet is not down one unit at a time.
Insurance considerations for this vehicle
- A working trailer is frequently insured under a commercial auto or inland marine policy rather than an RV policy, and the two treat the trailer and its contents very differently. Confirm which one covers the trailer itself.
- Wear on gates, hinges and decking is maintenance in every policy we have read. A gate bent by a load shifting during transit can be a covered event, and the difference is whether a single incident can be established.
- Theft of contents from an enclosed trailer is usually the operator's larger exposure, and it is covered by a different policy from the one insuring the trailer. Worth resolving before a season rather than after a break in.
Appendix: questions and answers
- My ramp gate suddenly feels much heavier. What happened?
- The spring or torsion assist has faded or broken. That assist carries most of a gate weighing well over a hundred pounds, so nothing looks broken when it fails, you are simply lifting the whole thing. Continuing bends the gate frame and wears the hinge pins unevenly, and replacing a gate costs far more than an assist.
- Why do the welds crack where my trailer fenders mount?
- Because they are brackets being used as steps. Fenders get stood on, leaned against, loaded over and sometimes driven across, none of which was in the design brief, in the part of the trailer collecting the most road spray. The weld cracks and then corrodes, and the corrosion hides the crack.
- Why is my trailer deck rotting in stripes?
