Hail claims are the one roof job where the repair plan is written half by the shop and half by the carrier. The physical work is not exotic. What decides the outcome is whether the damage was measured in a way an adjuster recognises, before anybody touched it, and whether the estimate speaks the language a hail file is settled in.
Almost none of the hail we see fell in Rancho Santa Margarita. Orange County gets hail once in a long while and it is rarely destructive. The units that arrive here were caught in an Arizona monsoon cell, a Texas spring storm on a snowbird run, or a Front Range hit while parked at a relative's house in Colorado. That geography matters, because it means the date of loss and the storm report are usually the first things we go looking for.
How carriers scope hail on an RV roof compared with a car
Automotive hail has a settled methodology. The vehicle is broken into panels, each panel gets a dent count and a size band, and a matrix converts that into paintless dent repair hours. Every adjuster in the country works from the same structure and the arguments are about numbers within a known framework.
An RV roof breaks that framework completely. There are no panels. There is one continuous membrane or one bonded laminate, and none of it can be pushed back out from behind. The unit of measure has to become area rather than panel, and the damage that matters is not cosmetic denting but fracture and bruising in a waterproofing layer.
So the scope has to be built differently. We divide the roof into sections, chalk ten inch test squares in each, count impacts inside them, and photograph every square with a ruler in frame. That gives an adjuster a countable, verifiable figure they can go check themselves. It is borrowed straight from residential roofing practice, and it works because it is the method their own training already recognises.
Counting dimples, bruises and fractures, and why the three differ
Not every mark is the same loss. A dimple is a depression with the sheet intact. A bruise is a dimple where the membrane has thinned and lost integrity without opening yet, and it reads noticeably softer under a thumb. A fracture is a dimple that has split, and it is leaking today whether or not anybody has seen water inside.
Fractures are what drive the repair decision. They cluster between rafters, because a membrane over an unsupported bay has nothing behind it to spread the impact, while the same stone directly over a truss usually leaves only a mark. Backlighting from inside the coach with a ceiling panel dropped turns marginal fractures into obvious ones.
Bruises are what drive the argument. They are real, they are documented in roofing literature, and they open within a season or two. Getting them counted in the original scope is much easier than reopening a closed file next spring to explain why a roof that was settled in March is leaking in October.

When a hail damaged roof gets replaced instead of patched
There is a point where patching stops making sense and it is arithmetic rather than opinion. Each patch carries its own labor, its own materials and its own perimeter of sealed edge. Around ten discrete fractures in one roof section, the labor to cut, prime, bond and dress all of them approaches the labor to strip that section and lay a single new sheet, and the new sheet has one perimeter instead of ten.
Two other findings force replacement regardless of count. Any decking that reads wet has to be opened, and once the membrane is off a large area you are already most of the way to a reskin. And an aged, oxidised membrane that fractured at small stone sizes has lost its elongation everywhere, not only where it was hit, so patching it is repairing the part that failed first rather than the part that is weak.
We put both numbers on the estimate. Patch count priced out, section reskin priced out, side by side. That makes it a decision the owner and the carrier can both see, rather than a recommendation they have to take on faith.
On the claim
Ask your carrier whether the policy carries a separate wind and hail deductible. Many do, often as a percentage of insured value rather than a flat figure, and it changes the owner's share substantially.
Matching a repair to a roof that has been in the sun for nine years
This is the conversation nobody enjoys. A new white patch on a nine year old EPDM roof is a bright rectangle in a field of grey, and it will stay visible for years because the surrounding sheet oxidised slowly and the patch has not started. On TPO the mismatch is less dramatic but still obvious at the seam.
Cosmetic mismatch on a roof is not a coverage argument the way a mismatched fender is, since almost nobody sees it. Where it matters practically is that the visible boundary tells you exactly how much of the original roof is now a different age than the rest, and that is a maintenance map for the next owner. On a unit heading for sale, that visual is worth factoring into the repair against replace decision.
What hail does below the roofline
Hail rarely falls straight down. Wind drives it at an angle, and the storm facing sidewall takes real damage that a scope written from the roof will miss entirely. Aluminum siding dimples. Fiberglass front caps craze and star. Window frames and awning rails take hits that show as small dents until you read them under a raking light.
Underneath the air conditioner shroud is the other commonly missed item. Split shrouds are obvious. Flattened condenser fins are not, and an air conditioner with restricted airflow runs hot for weeks and then fails in a way that is very difficult to attach to a storm three months earlier. We pull the shroud and photograph the condenser on every hail file for exactly that reason.
Cost, deductibles and what the owner actually pays
Hail work bills at the body and paint rate of $210 per hour, with supplies on top and parts at standard markup. Tax applies to parts and materials, not to labor. The estimate fee is $150 and it is credited in full when the repair proceeds. Deposits apply above $2,000 where the work is not being billed to a carrier.
The number that surprises owners is not our number, it is the deductible. Plenty of RV policies carry a separate wind and hail deductible expressed as a percentage of insured value, which on a well insured fifth wheel can be several thousand dollars against a flat collision deductible of five hundred. Reading that clause before filing is worth doing, because on a smaller hail loss it occasionally changes whether filing makes sense at all.
Documenting a hail loss so the file holds together
Three things make a hail file settle cleanly. A date of loss that matches published storm data for the location. Photographs taken before anything was cleaned up, with a scale in frame. And a counted, chalked test square method an adjuster can verify by climbing up and repeating it.
The most common way owners damage their own claim is tidying. Sweeping up broken lid fragments, washing the roof, or having somebody tape a fracture before the inspection all remove evidence that cannot be recreated. If the unit has to be made watertight before an adjuster can attend, photograph everything first and tell the carrier what was done and why.

How the work runs
Establish the loss before touching the roof

Date, location and storm data come first. On a unit that took hail in another state months earlier, causation is the hardest part of the file, and it is far easier to build before a repair order exists than after.
Chalk, square and count
2 to 4 hours
The roof is divided into sections and four ten inch test squares are chalked in each. Impacts inside each square are counted and photographed with a scale. This is the number an adjuster can check, which is exactly why we produce it.
Map the fractures and inventory the plastics
2 to 5 hours
Every penetrating fracture is numbered on a roof diagram. Lids, domes, shrouds and antenna housings are listed with part numbers. Backlighting from inside catches the fractures that are invisible from above.
Run the repair against replace numbers

Patch labor and materials for the counted fractures are priced next to a section reskin. Where the two are close, we recommend the reskin, because a patched roof has enormous edge length and every edge is a future maintenance point.
Execute and flood test

Whichever route is authorized, all disturbed flanges are rebedded on fresh butyl and topped with self leveling sealant, then the roof is flooded and held while a technician watches the interior ceiling for the full test period.

What not to try yourself
- Cleaning up the roof before the adjuster sees it. Removing broken lid fragments and washing away impact marks destroys the evidence the claim rests on, and there is no way to recreate it afterward.
- Accepting a scope written from the ground. Hail on an RV roof cannot be assessed from a ladder at the rear, and initial scopes written that way routinely miss the fractures between rafters entirely.
- Patching bruised membrane and calling it complete. Bruises open later, usually after the claim has closed, and reopening a settled hail file is far harder than including the count at the start.
- Running the air conditioner with flattened condenser fins after a hail event. The unit will overheat, and a compressor failure three weeks later is a much harder item to attach to the storm.
