What is involved in ceramic coating an RV?

Ceramic coating bonds a SiO2 layer to prepared gelcoat or paint. The work is almost entirely preparation: decontamination, correction, and a solvent wipe before application in a controlled indoor bay. Ceramic coating is the most misunderstood product in vehicle care, mostly because of how it gets marketed. It is a liquid that cures into a hard, chemically resistant layer bonded to the surface underneath it. That layer sheds water aggressively, resists chemical staining and UV, and makes washing dramatically easier. What it is not is armor, and any conversation that starts with scratch immunity is going to end in disappointment.

On an RV the value proposition is different from a car and it is stronger. A coach has enormous surface area, it lives outdoors, and washing it is a genuine chore that owners put off. A coated coach sheds dirt instead of holding it, releases black streaking far more easily, and takes a fraction of the effort to clean. That practical difference is why RV owners who try it rarely go back.

What a ceramic coating actually does

A ceramic coating is a liquid containing silicon dioxide that cures into a thin, hard, chemically resistant film bonded to the surface below it. Three properties matter in practice. It is hydrophobic, so water beads tightly and takes dirt with it as it runs off. It resists chemicals and UV, so bug residue, hard water and sunlight have a much harder time etching the finish. And it is slick, so contamination has less to grip.

On a coach those properties compound into something owners notice immediately: washing gets dramatically easier and less frequent. Black streaks that used to require dedicated chemistry release with a rinse and a wash mitt. A unit that took most of a Saturday takes a fraction of that. For a vehicle with this much surface area, that is the real return, more than the appearance.

The 30 day cure window after a repaint

This is the rule we enforce most strictly and it is the reason this page exists as the single ceramic page on the site rather than as a footnote in the paint department. A freshly sprayed basecoat and clearcoat continues releasing solvent for weeks after it feels dry and looks finished. That process, outgassing, needs an open surface. Seal it under a ceramic layer too early and the solvent is trapped.

The results are ugly and expensive. Gloss falls back, which the trade calls die back, and the panel that left the booth looking spectacular looks flat a month later. In worse cases the trapped solvent forces its way out and leaves small blisters in the film. Both outcomes mean correcting or refinishing a panel that was perfect. Thirty days minimum, and on heavy film builds we prefer longer. There is no product and no technique that shortens it.

Why preparation is 80 percent of the work

Application takes a few hours. Everything before it takes days, and that ratio is the honest description of this service. A coating bonds to whatever it lands on, and it locks that condition in for its service life. Bonded contamination under a coating stays there. Swirl marks under a coating stay there. Polishing oils under a coating prevent it from bonding at all, which is the most common cause of a coating that fails within months.

So the sequence is decontaminate, correct, panel wipe, apply. The correction stage is where the hours vary the most, since a well kept unit needs a light pass and a chalked one needs a full oxidation removal first. That is why two quotes for coating the same length of coach can differ by thousands of dollars, and why anybody quoting a flat price by unit length has not looked at the surface.

What 9H means and what it does not

9H refers to a pencil hardness scale used to characterize coating films, in which a range of graded pencil leads are drawn across a surface to see which one marks it. It is a legitimate laboratory measure and it says nothing whatsoever about resistance to rock chips, road debris or a shopping cart. Those are impact and abrasion events at energies the test never contemplates.

Being straight about this is worth more than a marketing line. A ceramic coating substantially reduces wash induced marring and chemical etching, which are the two things that actually degrade a large vehicle finish over time. It does not stop a stone off the SR-241 from chipping the front cap. Owners who understand that boundary are consistently happy with the result. Owners who were sold immunity are not, and neither outcome depends on the product.

Decals, graphics and mixed surfaces

Almost every coach is a mixed surface: gelcoat on the sides, painted panels or a painted cap, vinyl graphics across all of it, plus trim, glass and a roof in a different material again. A coating behaves differently on each and the decision about what to coat is made surface by surface. Sound vinyl graphics take a coating well and benefit from the UV resistance. Graphics that have started lifting at the edges do not, because the coating bonds to something that is on its way off.

We assess decal condition before quoting and say clearly when graphics should be addressed first. Coating a failing decal locks a problem in place and makes eventual removal harder, and finding that out at year two is a genuinely annoying way to learn it.

What ceramic coating costs on an RV

Coating bills at $95 per hour from the detail department and runs $1,200 to $5,500. The application itself is a fairly consistent block of hours for a given size of unit. Correction is the variable, and it is what separates a low quote from a high one on identical coaches. A well maintained van needing a light polish sits at the bottom. A forty foot coach needing full oxidation removal before coating sits at the top.

Materials carry standard markup with sales tax applied to parts and materials, and labor is not taxed. The $150 written estimate follows a physical inspection of the surface, since quoting a coating without touching the panels is how owners end up with a supplement conversation halfway through.

Washing and maintaining a coated coach

A coated surface is not a maintenance free surface, it is a low maintenance one. Wash with a pH neutral product and two buckets, dry rather than letting hard water evaporate on the panel in the sun, and stay away from anything abrasive or aggressively alkaline. Automatic washes with brushes undo the slickness the coating provides and dish detergents strip it. Both are common and both are avoidable.

Done properly, a coated coach washes in a fraction of the time an uncoated one takes and holds its appearance between washes far longer. Most of the failures we see reported after a coating are not product failures. They are maintenance technique, and ten minutes at handover prevents the majority of them, which is why that walk around is part of the job rather than a courtesy.

Process

How the work runs

  1. Inspect and set the plan

    1 to 2 hours

    Substrate type, decal condition, paint age and defect level are assessed. If the unit was painted recently, we establish the date, because a repaint under 30 days old changes the schedule rather than the price. Coating a green film is not something we will do.

  2. Decontaminate completely

    3 to 8 hours

    Wash, iron and fallout removal, and mechanical decontamination across every surface to be coated. A ceramic layer bonds to whatever is under it, so anything left behind becomes a permanent part of the finish for the life of the coating.

  3. Correct the surface

    4 to 20 hours

    Polishing removes defects that would otherwise be sealed in. On gelcoat this often overlaps with oxidation work. On fresh paint the correction is gentler and focused on levelling rather than cutting, since the film is new and there is no reason to remove material.

  4. Panel wipe and apply

    3 to 8 hours

    Every panel is wiped with a dedicated solvent so the coating meets clean substrate, then the product goes on in controlled sections and is levelled within its working window. Inspection lighting is moved along the panel as the work proceeds rather than checked at the end.

  5. Cure indoors and hand over

    1 to 2 hours

    The coach stays inside while the coating sets. Before release we walk the owner around the unit under good light and go through maintenance washing, because the difference between a coating that lasts and one that does not is largely what happens in the first month.

  • A 40 foot coach requiring substantial correction before coating reaches $5,500.
  • Correction hours are the variable. Coating application itself is a consistent portion of the job.

  • Coating a repaint before it has outgassed. Thirty days minimum, and trapping solvent under a ceramic layer produces dulling and blistering that costs a refinish to correct.
  • Applying ceramic outdoors or in direct sun. It flash cures before it can be levelled and the high spots have to be machine polished off.
  • Coating over failing decals or graphics. The coating bonds to something that is already leaving and takes patches with it.
  • Using an automatic wash or a dish detergent on a coated coach. Both strip the properties you paid for and the coating cannot recover on its own.

Technician note

The thirty day rule is the one I get pushed on the most. A coach comes out of our booth looking incredible and the owner wants it locked in that afternoon. I understand it and the answer is still no. That paint film is still letting solvent out for weeks, and if I seal it under ceramic that solvent has nowhere to go. It comes back as die back, sometimes as little blisters, and now we are repainting a panel that was perfect. I would rather have an awkward conversation on day one than an expensive one on day forty.

How long after painting my RV can it be ceramic coated?

Why do ceramic coating quotes for the same size RV differ so much?

Can ceramic coating be applied over gelcoat, not just paint?
