Cabinet Box, Face Frame and Door Repair for RV Interiors

When should an RV cabinet be repaired, refaced or replaced?

Repair a cabinet when the carcass is square and only hardware or a door has failed. Reface when boxes are sound but the look is dated. Replace when the box racks or the material is saturated. Last verified

Grab the front corner of an overhead cabinet and push it diagonally. If the whole box moves as a parallelogram, you have found the actual problem, and it is not the door that will not stay shut. RV carcasses are built to a weight target: eighth or quarter inch sides, a hardwood face frame, staples and glue. That construction is adequate until thousands of miles of road input starts working the joints.

Once a box racks, nothing mounted to it stays aligned. Doors go out of parallel with the face frame, roller catches stop engaging squarely, and drawers begin to rub on one side. Owners chase those symptoms one at a time for years. The efficient repair is to square and reinforce the carcass first, then hang whatever is going on the front of it.

RV cabinets are built to a weight target, not a kitchen standard

A residential cabinet uses three quarter inch plywood or particleboard sides because weight does not matter in a house. A coach cannot afford that. So carcasses come out of the factory in eighth to quarter inch stock with a hardwood face frame doing most of the structural work, assembled with staples and glue. It is a reasonable engineering answer to a real constraint.

The consequence is that RV cabinetry fails differently. Screws have very little material to grip. Staples in end grain let go under vibration long before a glue line would. And the box relies on being installed square into structure, because it has almost no inherent resistance to racking once it is out of square. Understanding that changes how you repair it.

The diagonal test that decides the whole estimate

Measuring both diagonals of a cabinet face opening takes about thirty seconds and it settles the argument. Matching numbers mean the box is square, the problem is on the front of it, and a hardware or door repair will hold. Numbers that differ by any meaningful amount mean the carcass is out of square, and every alignment on that cabinet is now a symptom of the same cause.

This matters financially because refacing a racked cabinet is the most common way owners waste money on interior work. New doors on a parallelogram look worse than the old doors did, because a fresh crisp edge makes the misalignment more obvious rather than less. We do the diagonal check before quoting so nobody ends up in that position.

Hardware that survives a highway

Concealed thirty five millimetre Euro hinges are what nearly everything in a modern coach hangs on, and they adjust in three axes: depth, height and side to side. A surprising number of complaints resolve at the hinge with a screwdriver and five minutes, provided the box behind them is square. Where they genuinely fail it is usually the mounting plate screws in thin stock rather than the hinge itself.

Catches are the other half of the story. A household magnetic catch will not hold a loaded door through a hard stop, and a worn roller catch that engages on one side only is effectively no catch at all. Positive travel latches exist for exactly this reason. Anything that carries weight or that would create a hazard if it opened at speed gets one, and we shake every door before the coach leaves.

Refacing against rebuilding, cabinet by cabinet

Refacing skins the face frames and replaces every door and drawer front across a run. It is the right call when the boxes are square, the layout works, and the coach simply looks its age. Done across a whole galley it reads as a new kitchen for a fraction of what a rebuild costs, and it does not disturb plumbing, wiring or countertops.

Rebuilding means new carcasses. That is the answer when boxes rack, when material is saturated, or when the layout is changing. It is more hours and it usually pulls the countertop and sometimes the flooring into the scope. We make that decision cabinet by cabinet rather than applying one answer to a whole coach, and the estimate lists which cabinets fall into which category.

Water under the galley and in the vanity

The base of a galley or vanity cabinet is the lowest point under every plumbing connection in that area, so it collects. A weeping P trap, a sink rim seal that has hardened, a PEX crimp that was never fully closed: any of them will produce a swollen dark base with a clean tide line where the water sat. The panel is thin and it wicks fast.

Our order of operations is unglamorous but it is the only one that works. Find the water first, prove it is fixed, then replace the panel in exterior grade material bedded in adhesive. Owners occasionally ask us to just swap the panel because the plumbing is a separate cost. We will decline that, because a new base under an active leak is a repair with a known expiry date.

Drawers, slides and latching that holds at speed

Drawer boxes get less attention than doors and fail just as often. RV boxes are frequently assembled from thin stock with a stapled bottom, and the bottom is what lets go first when a drawer is loaded with cookware and shaken for a few thousand miles. Once the bottom drops, the box loses its square and the slide begins to bind on one side.

Slide choice matters here. Bottom mount euro slides are light and inexpensive and they tolerate very little racking. Ball bearing side mount slides carry more, run smoother when the box is slightly out of true, and cost more. Whichever goes in, every drawer in a moving vehicle needs positive latching rather than friction detent, because a drawer that opens on a downhill braking event empties itself into the aisle.

What moves the number on cabinet work

Three variables account for most of the spread. How many boxes are out of square, whether doors are stock sizes or have to be made, and whether the finish has to match existing cabinetry that has aged in sunlight. A galley refaced in its entirety is straightforward. A single door matched into a twelve year old run is fussy work and the match is never perfect.

Labor is $210 per hour from the body and paint department with body supplies at $5 per body hour, and paint supplies at $55 per paint hour where finishing is involved. Doors and hardware carry standard parts markup with tax applied to parts and materials. Deposits apply above $2,000, which most full refacing jobs exceed.

Note

If you are considering refacing, do it as a run rather than as individual doors. Mixing new and aged fronts in one galley draws attention to the difference every time the light changes.

Scope

What is included

Carcass square check on every affected cabinet
Diagonals are measured and the box is pushed. This is the first thing done and it decides whether the rest of the job is hardware, refacing or replacement.

Euro hinges are adjusted in all three axes before replacement, and travel latches are specified for road load rather than household use.

Opened joints are reglued and clamped, damaged rails are replaced in matching stock, and the frame is finished to blend with the surrounding cabinetry.

New fronts are matched to the existing run for size, overlay and hinge bore, so hardware locations do not have to be reinvented.
Water damaged panel replacement
Saturated bases and sides are cut out and replaced in exterior grade material, after the water source has been found and corrected.

Process

How the work runs

  1. Survey every box, not just the complaint

    0.5 to 2 hours

    An owner reports one door. We check the whole run, because racking rarely affects a single cabinet and fixing one alignment in a row of five that are all drifting produces a door that now looks wrong next to its neighbours.

  2. Decide repair, reface or replace per cabinet

    1 to 2 hours

    Square boxes with tired fronts get refaced. Racked boxes get rebuilt or replaced. Wet boxes get their source traced first. That decision is made cabinet by cabinet and written down, so the estimate reflects a survey rather than an average.

  3. Square and reinforce the carcasses

    2 to 14 hours

    Boxes come out where needed, get pulled back to square, and are triangulated with gussets or a bonded back panel. Reinstallation lands fasteners in tube frame or in bonded blocking, never into foam or bare wallboard.

  4. Fit fronts and hardware

    2 to 12 hours

    Doors and drawer fronts are hung, then adjusted in depth, height and side to side at the hinge. Catches and travel latches go on last and are set so a door holds under braking rather than merely staying shut in a parked coach.

  5. Finish and road check

    1 to 8 hours

    Face frames and any exposed edges are finished to match, hardware is torqued, and every door and drawer is cycled and shaken. Anything that opens under a firm shove gets adjusted before the coach leaves the bay.

  • Paint supplies at $55 per paint hour.
  • Body supplies at $5 per body hour.
  • Parts at $100 or less carry 100 percent markup. Parts over $100 carry 35 percent. Special order parts require a full non refundable deposit at order.
  • Sales tax of 7.75 percent applies to parts and materials. Labor is not taxed.
  • A 50 percent deposit is taken at authorization on any job over $2,000, with an additional 25 percent when parts arrive on any job over $10,000. Final balance is due at pickup.
  • Hardware replacement and alignment across a few cabinets sits at the bottom of this range.
  • Refacing a full galley plus rebuilding two water damaged boxes sits at the top.
  • Door lead time, not shop labor, is usually what sets the return date on a refacing job.

How estimating is billed

  • Written repair estimate: $150, credited in full against an authorized repair.
  • In depth diagnostic, scan and programming: $285 per hour, one hour minimum, credited in full against an authorized repair.
  • In shop pre purchase inspection: $400 to $1,200 depending on unit size and systems count.
  • Insurance walk ins are accepted during posted hours. All inspection and estimating work is performed in shop at the Yorba Linda facility.

Why it happened

  • Staples pulling out of end grain in a thin carcass side, which is the standard failure mode in RV joinery rather than glue line failure
  • Road vibration racking a box over years, after which every alignment on that cabinet drifts together
  • Heat cycling next to a range, oven or an exterior wall, which releases the adhesive under a thermofoil or vinyl wrapped door
  • Water from a Thetford or Dometic fixture, a PEX crimp or a sink rim wicking into the bottom of a galley or vanity box
  • Heavy aftermarket doors hung on a carcass designed for light ones, which accelerates racking that was already starting
  • Missing or defeated travel latches, which lets a door swing on every corner and slowly tears the hinge plate out of its screws

Caution

What not to try yourself

  • Driving a longer screw into a stripped hinge hole in quarter inch stock. There is nothing more to grip and the second failure usually takes a chunk of the box side with it.
  • Gluing peeling thermofoil back down. The material has shrunk as well as released, so it will never sit flat again and the adhesive will not survive the next warm week anyway.
  • Hanging heavy solid wood doors on a carcass built for lightweight fronts. The extra mass accelerates racking and turns a cosmetic upgrade into a structural repair.
  • Sealing or painting over a swollen cabinet base. Whatever soaked into that panel is still in there, and coating it just gives the moisture nowhere to go except further into the box.

Technician note

Owners come in convinced they need new doors, and about half the time the doors are fine. What has happened is the box has gone out of square from ten years of road input, so the door is now hanging in a parallelogram. You can adjust a Euro hinge quite a long way, and people keep adjusting until they run out of travel, and then they blame the door. I measure both diagonals of the opening first. If those two numbers do not match, we are talking about the box, and no door you buy is going to fix it.

Appendix: questions and answers

Why does my cabinet door swing open while I am driving?
Either the catch is worn, or the box has racked so the catch no longer engages squarely. Check the diagonals of the face opening first. If they do not match, no catch will hold reliably, because the door and the strike are no longer meeting at the angle they were designed to meet at.
The hinge screw just spins. Can it be fixed without a new cabinet?
Usually yes. We epoxy a hardwood dowel into the hole or bond a plywood cleat behind the mounting area, then remount into solid material. Driving a bigger screw into quarter inch stock rarely works twice, and the second failure often takes a section of the box side with it.
Can peeling vinyl on my cabinet doors be glued back down?
No. Thermofoil and rigid vinyl shrink as they release, so even with perfect adhesive the material no longer covers the door. The fix is new fronts, and where several doors in a run are affected we recommend refacing the whole run so the finish stays consistent.
Can you match a single new door to my existing cabinets?
We can get close on profile and hardware bore, but colour match on a run that has aged in Southern California sunlight is difficult and the result is usually visible in raking light. For one damaged door we will try. For three or more we generally recommend refacing the run instead.
The cabinet floor under my sink is swollen. Do you need to fix the plumbing too?
Yes, and we will not replace the panel without it. A swollen base with a clear tide line means water sat there, and the source is usually a P trap, a hardened sink rim seal or an incomplete PEX crimp. A new panel under an active leak has a very short life.
Can I upgrade to solid wood doors throughout the coach?
Only where the carcasses can carry them. RV boxes are built light and heavier fronts accelerate racking, so we check each box first and reinforce where needed. There is also a weight consequence across a full galley that matters on a coach already close to its cargo capacity.
