Last verified

Owners usually arrive with a photograph. Light floors, white shaker doors, a quartz galley top, the theater seating gone in favour of a sofa. All of it achievable. What the photograph never shows is the order the work has to happen in, and that order is what decides whether the project takes six weeks or five months.

A coach interior is a stack of dependencies. Flooring runs under cabinets from the factory, so cabinets come out before floors. Walls hide wiring, so anything electrical happens while panels are off or it costs three times as much later. Structure has to be sound before anything decorative lands on it. Get the sequence right and the job is predictable. Get it wrong and half of it gets done twice.

Sequence is the whole project

Every dependency in a coach interior points the same direction: what was installed first has to be removed first and reinstalled first. Factories lay sheet vinyl across a bare deck and then set cabinets on top of it, which means the flooring physically continues under every box in the coach. Owners who lay new flooring up to the toe kick have quietly guaranteed that any future cabinet work will damage their new floor.

The same logic applies vertically. Wallboard hides the wiring and the tube frame. Once a panel is closed, adding an outlet, moving a light or rerouting a circuit stops being a twenty minute job and becomes a demolition job. We plan the whole electrical and plumbing scope during teardown for that reason, and we ask owners for their five year intentions rather than just their current wish list.

Weight is a design constraint, not an afterthought

Every coach carries a cargo carrying capacity figure, and every pound of remodel comes out of it. Engineered stone runs roughly three times the weight of solid surface for the same galley footprint. Tile plus backer in an entry adds more than most owners expect. Replace a lightweight jackknife sofa with powered theater seating and the difference is real. Individually none of these decisions is dramatic. Together they can consume most of what the chassis had left.

We take corner weights before demolition and again at completion, and the comparison goes to the owner in writing. It is a simple document that occasionally saves somebody from a very expensive misunderstanding at a weigh station, and more often it just confirms that the choices made were sensible.

What teardown finds, and why we price for it

The single most common scope change on a remodel is water. Not a dramatic leak, usually. A window flange that has been weeping for six seasons, a shower pan flange that separated a millimetre, a slide floor seal that stopped sealing. None of it visible with cabinets in place, all of it obvious the moment they come out.

That is why our remodel estimates separate the finish scope from the structural contingency rather than pretending one number covers both. When teardown finds nothing, the owner pays for what was quoted. When it finds a rotten section of deck under the bathroom, that becomes its own documented line rather than a surprise buried in a larger invoice.

Rebuild, reface or replace the cabinetry

Three legitimate paths exist and they cost very different amounts. Refacing keeps the carcasses and changes doors, drawer fronts and face frame skins. Rebuilding keeps the layout but constructs new boxes. Replacing changes the layout entirely, which means new fastening points, new electrical positions and usually new countertop templates.

The deciding factor is whether the existing boxes are sound. RV carcasses are built light, often from eighth or quarter inch material with a hardwood face frame, stapled and glued. That is fine for the loads they were designed for. It is not always fine for a heavier door, and hanging expensive new fronts on a carcass that racks is the most common way owners waste money on this work.

Designing for a vehicle rather than a room

A coach interior has to survive being driven. Everything that opens needs a positive latch that holds under braking. Everything heavy needs to be anchored into structure. Anything glass or stone needs support behind it across its full span, because a countertop that spans an unsupported gap will find the frequency that cracks it somewhere on the I-15.

We also design for service access. An owner who cannot reach a water pump, a fuse panel or the back of a refrigerator without dismantling new cabinetry has a beautiful coach that is expensive to maintain. Access panels are part of the plan from the start, and they are the detail most residential contractors leave out when they take on an RV.

Note

Bring your intended use, not just your inspiration photos. A coach that lives in a driveway and one that runs 15,000 miles a year need different fastening, different latching and different materials, even if they look identical when finished.

Appliance swaps and the cutouts they leave behind

Almost every remodel involves at least one appliance change, and appliance dimensions have drifted considerably over the years. A modern compressor refrigerator rarely matches the opening left by an absorption Norcold or Dometic unit, a residential microwave does not fill an RV convection cutout, and a new cooktop brings its own clearance requirements to combustible surfaces.

So we treat openings as part of the cabinetry scope rather than as an appliance detail. Cutouts are rebuilt to the new unit, filler panels are made in matching material instead of improvised in trim, and venting is corrected where a compressor unit no longer needs the roof vent that an absorption fridge required. Doing this during the cabinetry stage costs a fraction of retrofitting a filler strip after the galley is finished.

How remodel cost and schedule are built

Interior work bills from the body and paint department at $210 per hour with body supplies at $5 per body hour, and paint supplies at $55 per paint hour where finishing is involved. Materials and parts carry standard markup with tax on parts and materials only. Deposits are 50 percent above $2,000 with a further 25 percent at parts arrival on jobs above $10,000, which most full remodels are.

Schedule is driven less by labor than by sequence and lead time. Cabinet doors, countertop material and furniture all have their own delivery calendars, and a coach cannot be closed up while any of them are outstanding. We build the schedule backwards from the longest lead item and tell owners that date at authorization rather than discovering it together in week four.

On cost

A written estimate is $150 and is credited in full against an authorized repair. On a remodel that document is where the weight budget, the sequence and the contingency scope all get agreed before anything is cut.

Process

How the work runs

  1. Design against a weight budget

    3 to 10 hours

    Before a single material is chosen, we establish what the coach can carry. Quartz galley tops, tile and hardwood are all available, and all of them have a number attached. Owners who plan to travel loaded get told which combinations do not work on their chassis.

  2. Strip and survey

    10 to 40 hours

    Everything comes out in order and the structure gets inspected with the coach open. Moisture readings, frame condition, floor deflection and wiring routes are all documented here. This is the stage that most often rewrites the estimate, and it is better that it does.

  3. Correct structure and rough in services

    8 to 60 hours

    Wet substrate, cracked framing and soft decking are repaired. Wiring reroutes, plumbing changes and any new circuit runs happen now while everything is accessible, because doing them later means opening finished walls.

  4. Walls, ceiling and cabinetry

    15 to 80 hours

    Panels and headliner go back or get replaced, then cabinet carcasses are set and secured into tube frame rather than into foam. Doors and drawer fronts are fitted and aligned before anything else lands on top of them.

  5. Flooring, countertops and furniture

    12 to 60 hours

    Finish flooring goes in around the set cabinetry, countertops are templated to the installed boxes rather than to a drawing, and furniture is placed and anchored with travel loads in mind rather than living room loads.

  6. Trim, function test and reweigh

    6 to 20 hours

    Corner molding, insert trim and hardware finish the job. Every door, drawer and latch is cycled, appliances are run, and the coach goes back on scales so the owner leaves knowing what the remodel actually weighs.

  • Sales tax of 7.75 percent applies to parts and materials. Labor is not taxed.
  • A 50 percent deposit is taken at authorization on any job over $2,000, with an additional 25 percent when parts arrive on any job over $10,000. Final balance is due at pickup.
  • A cosmetic refresh of flooring, valances and paint on sound structure sits near the bottom.
  • A full gut on a 40 foot coach with new cabinetry, solid surface tops and reupholstered furniture reaches the top and can pass it.
  • Structural or water damage found at demolition is the most common reason a remodel budget moves after authorization.

How estimating is billed

  • Written repair estimate: $150, credited in full against an authorized repair.
  • In depth diagnostic, scan and programming: $285 per hour, one hour minimum, credited in full against an authorized repair.
  • In shop pre purchase inspection: $400 to $1,200 depending on unit size and systems count.
  • Insurance walk ins are accepted during posted hours. All inspection and estimating work is performed in shop at the Yorba Linda facility.

  • Appliance replacements that no longer fit the original cutouts, leaving trim patches and mismatched openings across a galley
  • Previous partial remodels done out of sequence, where new flooring was laid around cabinets and now nothing can be moved without a visible scar

Caution

What not to try yourself

  • Laying new flooring around the existing cabinets to save time. The next time any box has to move, the floor under it does not exist, and the repair is visible forever.
  • Anchoring a wall mounted television or overhead cabinet without locating the aluminum tube. A screw into foam and wallboard holds until the first freeway expansion joint.
  • Specifying stone countertops without checking cargo capacity. A galley top in quartz can consume a meaningful share of what the coach is legally allowed to carry.
  • Closing walls before the wiring is where you want it. Everything electrical is inexpensive with panels off and expensive with panels on, and that ratio does not improve later.

Technician note

The conversation I have on almost every remodel is about weight. Somebody wants quartz in the galley and tile in the entry, and on paper it looks great. Then we weigh the coach and there is barely enough capacity left for a full fresh tank and two people. I would rather have that argument on day one with a scale ticket in my hand than hand somebody back a beautiful coach they cannot legally load. Solid surface gets you most of the look at a fraction of the pounds, and nobody has ever regretted that trade once they see the numbers.

Appendix: questions and answers

How many weeks should I plan for a full interior gut?
Two to ten shop weeks depending on scope. Labor is only part of it. Cabinet doors, countertop material and furniture each carry their own lead times, and the coach cannot be closed while any of them are outstanding. We schedule backwards from the longest lead item and give you that date at authorization.
Does new flooring really need to go under the cabinets?
It should, because that is how the coach was built. Factory sheet vinyl runs across the bare deck with cabinets set on top. Laying new floor only up to the toe kick means any future cabinet work exposes bare deck, and the patch is permanently visible. Set cabinets first, then floor to them.
Can my coach handle quartz countertops?
Some can, many cannot without giving up useful load. Engineered stone runs roughly three times the weight of solid surface across the same galley footprint. We weigh the coach before design and show you what the choice costs against your cargo capacity, then you decide with a real number rather than a guess.
What happens if you find water damage after demolition starts?
It becomes its own documented line item and we pause finish work until the source is traced and repaired. Our remodel estimates separate the finish scope from a structural contingency for exactly this reason, so a rotten section of deck under the bathroom is not buried inside a larger cosmetic number.
Can I supply my own materials for the remodel?
For some items yes, and we will tell you which ones honestly. Flooring and hardware are usually straightforward. Countertop material and cabinet components are riskier because a wrong specification discovered mid build stops the sequence, and a stalled coach occupies a bay while nothing progresses.
Can you mount a television or shelving on any interior wall?
Only where there is aluminum tube behind the panel, or where we bond blocking to the substrate first. A fastener into foam and wallboard has almost no pull out strength and it fails on the first rough road. We map the frame before placing anything heavy on a wall.
