A refrigerator in a coach is not a kitchen appliance that happens to be traveling. On most units it is an absorption box with no compressor, no fan on the cold side and no moving parts in the cooling circuit at all, driving a sealed charge of ammonia, water, hydrogen and sodium chromate up a boiler tube on either a propane flame or a 120 volt heating element. When it quits making cold, the answer is almost always in that heat path rather than in the cabinet.
Owners usually arrive after a weekend where the milk went warm while the freezer still held. The first job in the bay is establishing which of two completely different machines we are looking at. A Dometic or Norcold absorption unit and a Furrion 12 volt compressor box fail for unrelated reasons, take unrelated parts, and carry unrelated odds of the repair being worth the money.
Absorption or compressor: which refrigerator do you actually have?
An absorption unit has no compressor. Heat drives the whole cycle, supplied either by a propane flame or a 120 volt element, and the cold is produced by ammonia coming out of solution as it moves through a sealed steel circuit. Nothing rotates. That is why these boxes are quiet, why they tolerate being run on propane for a week off grid, and why they are unforgiving about being operated off level or without airflow behind them.
A compressor unit works the way the refrigerator in your kitchen does, except the newer RV versions run natively on 12 volts. Furrion and Everchill boxes fall in this group. They do not care about level, they pull down much faster, and they do care intensely about voltage. Most compressor complaints we chase turn out to be a house bank or a feed problem wearing a refrigerator costume.

What a failed cooling unit actually looks like
The cooling unit is the sealed steel circuit bonded to the back of the box. When a boiler tube fatigues and lets go, the charge escapes and leaves behind two signatures that are hard to miss once you know them. The first is a sharp chemical odor at the lower vent that owners consistently describe as smelling like hair dye. The second is a crust of yellow or yellow green powder somewhere along the boiler tube, which is sodium chromate that came out with the ammonia.
Neither of those is repairable in a shop. There is no port to recharge through and no reason to pretend otherwise. What happens next is a decision between a replacement cooling unit and a complete refrigerator, and the honest inputs to that decision are the age of the box, the condition of the cabinet and door seals, and whether the vent path can be brought back to spec. We put both numbers in writing and let the owner choose.
Before you proceed
An ammonia odor at the vent means the coach should not be slept in until the unit is isolated. Shut the LP off at the tank, open windows, and bring it in.
Norcold recall history and why it still comes up
Norcold ran a long series of recalls across the 1200 and 1210 families and several later models, all of them tracing back to boiler tube fatigue and the fire risk that follows when a charge vents onto a hot surface. Many coaches received a recall kit that added a thermal cutoff device rather than a new cooling unit. Owners who bought used often have no idea whether that work was ever done.
It matters on the bench because a unit with a tripped thermal cutoff behaves like a dead refrigerator without any of the usual warning signs, and because we want to know whether the coach is carrying a model that has an open campaign against it before we quote a cooling unit. We check the model and serial against the published campaigns and put what we find in the file. If a manufacturer remedy exists, the owner should be the one who decides whether to use it.
How we chase a propane side fault
The propane side of an absorption fridge is a short chain and every link is testable. Supply pressure at the manifold, a clean orifice, a burner that lights and stays lit, a flue that can breathe, and a control that can see the flame it just made. We work that chain in order with a manometer on the bench, because guessing at the middle of the chain is how a shop ends up selling a board to a coach that needed a five dollar part cleaned.
Storage is the usual villain. A coach that sits in a lot off Santa Margarita Parkway between trips gives mud daubers a quiet, sheltered tube to build in, and a partially blocked orifice produces a lazy yellow tipped flame that soots the flue and eventually will not sustain at all. We pull nests out of burner tubes with real regularity, and the fix is inexpensive when it is caught before the flue loads up.

What keeps an absorption box alive longer
Three habits account for most of the difference between a unit that reaches fifteen years and one that dies at seven. Level the coach before you run the box for any length of time, because liquid that stalls in a tilted tube is what cooks a boiler. Keep the vent path clear at both ends, roof and lower door, since the entire cycle depends on shedding heat behind the cabinet. And run it on propane periodically rather than leaving it on shore power for months, which keeps the burner and orifice from silting up in storage.
The fourth habit is less obvious. Give the box time. An absorption unit pulls down slowly by design, and owners who load a warm fridge with warm groceries an hour before leaving will decide it is broken when it is simply behind. Cool it the night before on shore power and load it cold.

When a refrigerator failure becomes a claim
A cooling unit that wore out is maintenance and no carrier pays for it. What does become a claim is the damage a venting unit or a refrigerator fire causes: scorched cabinetry, a burned vent surround, smoke through the coach, or spoiled contents where the policy includes them. Those are covered events with a refrigerator at the center rather than refrigerator claims.
If there has been heat damage of any kind, photograph it before anything is pulled and tell us at intake. Once a burned burner assembly is in a parts bin, connecting it to a scorched sidewall becomes an argument instead of a document.

Verify the complaint on both heat sources

The box runs on the element and on gas while fin temperature is logged. This is the single most informative hour of the job and it decides whether the rest of the work is electrical, gas side or a sealed unit replacement.
Inspect the boiler and vent path

Lower vent off, boiler tube examined for powder residue and scorching, flue pulled and checked for nesting material. Storage lot units in this part of Orange County collect mud dauber nests in the burner tube more often than owners expect.
Test gas supply and control chain
1 to 2 hours
Manometer on the manifold, electrode gap set, flame sense verified, board outputs checked under a real ignition attempt. Parts are only condemned once they fail a test, never because they are the cheap thing to try first.
Repair or replace
2 to 12 hours
Gas path work happens in the bay. A cooling unit or full box replacement means the refrigerator comes out of the cabinet, which is also the only moment the mounting and insulation can be corrected properly.

The box is brought down from ambient and held overnight with a logger inside, on the heat source that failed. A refrigerator that cools for twenty minutes on a bench proves nothing about how it will behave on a trip.

What not to try yourself
- Standing a leaking absorption unit on its head to redistribute the charge. The internet trick works occasionally and permanently ruins the unit the rest of the time.
- Running a burner with a partially blocked orifice to burn the obstruction out. That soots the flue and turns a one hour clean into a full burner and flue job.
- Sealing the roof vent to keep rain out. The vent stack is the exhaust path for the entire cooling cycle and blocking it cooks the boiler.
- Sleeping in a coach with an ammonia smell at the vent. Air it out, shut the LP at the tank, and have the unit looked at before the next night.

- Why does my RV fridge work on electric but not on propane?
- Because the cooling unit is fine and the gas path is not. The most common causes are a blocked burner orifice, a sooted flue, or supply pressure out of range at the manifold. This is usually a one to three hour repair and it is the best possible answer to get, since the expensive part of the refrigerator has already proven it works.
- What does an ammonia smell at the refrigerator vent mean?
- The sealed cooling unit has vented. That smell, along with yellow powder on the boiler tube, means the charge has escaped and the circuit cannot be recharged. Shut the propane off at the tank, ventilate the coach and stop using the unit. The repair path is a replacement cooling unit or a complete refrigerator.
- Should I replace the cooling unit or the whole refrigerator?
