The kitchen in a coach runs on a fuel that is stored as a liquid, delivered as a vapor and regulated down to a pressure measured in inches of water column. Everything about how a range behaves traces back to that. A burner that will not stay lit, an oven that runs a hundred degrees off its dial and a cooktop that burns yellow are three different symptoms of one system that is either delivering the right gas at the right pressure or it is not.
We see these appliances after somebody has already replaced an igniter and a knob and the problem stayed. That is common, because the parts owners can reach are rarely the parts that fail. The ones that fail sit behind the burner box: thermocouples, safety valves, orifices with fifteen years of dust and spider silk in them, and a regulator that has quietly drifted out of range.
Why an RV burner behaves differently from the one at home
A residential range runs on natural gas at a low pressure with a large orifice. A coach runs on propane at a higher energy density through a much smaller bore, regulated down through a two stage regulator that also feeds the furnace, the water heater and often the refrigerator. Everything shares that supply. A pressure problem is therefore never a range problem alone, and that single fact reorders how a gas appliance should be diagnosed.
It also explains why RV burners are fussy about cleanliness. The bore in an LP orifice is small enough that a few seasons of dust, a spider that found shelter in the venturi, or grease carried up from a boilover can measurably restrict flow. The flame goes yellow, lifts off the cap, and leaves soot on the bottom of a pot. Owners read that as a dying appliance when it is usually about an hour of careful cleaning.
The ten second test that identifies most oven complaints
Hold the knob in, light the oven, count to ten after you let go. If the flame dies at roughly that mark, the thermocouple is not producing enough signal to hold the safety valve open on its own. That is the single most common gas appliance failure in an RV kitchen and it has almost nothing to do with the valve everybody wants to blame.
The valve gets replaced far too often because it is the expensive part and replacing it feels decisive. We measure instead. A probe on the thermocouple tip during a live flame tells you in thirty seconds whether the signal is strong, marginal or absent, and a marginal signal with a correctly positioned tip means the part is tired. If the signal is strong and the valve still drops the flame, then the valve has earned the replacement.

The manometer test and what a drifting regulator does
Supply pressure on an LP coach is measured in inches of water column, and the correct way to check it is with a manometer at the manifold while appliances are actually drawing. A regulator that has been in service ten or more years drifts. When it does, every appliance downstream gets a little weaker at the same time, which produces a service complaint that sounds like bad luck and is really one part.
This is the check most owners have never had done and the one that saves the most money. We run it on any coach where more than one gas appliance is misbehaving, and on every job where a range part gets replaced, because putting a new thermocouple on a coach with low supply pressure means the owner comes back and reasonably assumes we sold them the wrong part.
Note
If the furnace has been weak, the water heater slow and the cooktop lazy in the same season, the odds strongly favor the regulator over three separate appliance failures.
Glass covers, grates and the cabinet around the range
Not every range complaint is a gas complaint. Tempered glass covers crack at the hinge from being closed on a hot grate or from flexing on a rough road. Grates warp. The cabinet opening around a range is a fitted hole, and a replacement unit rarely matches the old footprint exactly, which turns a simple swap into trim and filler work that has to be done cleanly if the kitchen is going to look right afterward.
We handle that side in the same visit rather than sending an owner to a second shop for the cabinetry. When a full replacement is on the table, the fitment work goes in the estimate up front, because a range that drops into a hole with a half inch gap on one side is not a finished job.
What range and cooktop repair costs
Work bills at $260 per hour from the mechanical and electrical department, with the range of $350 to $2,500 tracking scope closely. A thermocouple with a documented leak test lands near the bottom. Orifice and burner service across a four burner cooktop plus an oven calibration sits in the middle. A full range replacement with gas line rework and cabinet fitment reaches the top.
A $45 hazmat and disposal charge applies on any job where the LP system is opened. Parts carry standard markup, sales tax applies to parts and materials, and labor is not taxed. The $150 written estimate lays out the scope in advance and is credited in full against an authorized repair.
The kitchens we see most often
Fifth wheels and larger travel trailers carry the biggest RV kitchens and the most cooking hours, which is why they show orifice contamination and thermocouple fatigue earliest. Truck campers run compact two burner units where access is tight and the gas line routing is unforgiving. Motorhome kitchens sit closer to the chassis and pick up more vibration, which shows up as loosened fittings more often than in a towable.
The leak test we do on every gas job
Any repair that breaks a gas connection ends with a pressure hold on the system and a soap check at each joint that was disturbed. The result is written into the file with the date. This is not optional work and it is not a line an owner can decline, because releasing a coach with an unverified gas joint is not something a licensed shop does.
It also protects the owner later. If a coach comes back six months on with a gas complaint, the file shows exactly what was tested and when, which turns a suspicion into a documented starting point instead of a debate about what somebody may have done.

How the work runs
Run the appliance cold and document

The range is operated exactly as the owner described the failure, on a cold start, with every burner and the oven exercised in turn. Intermittent gas faults hide from a warm appliance and appear reliably on the first light of the day.
Read supply pressure

A manometer goes on the manifold and pressure is logged with a single burner running and again with several running. If supply is out of range, everything downstream of it is suspect and the appliance diagnosis waits until that is corrected.
Isolate to the failed component
1 to 3 hours
Thermocouple millivolts, valve response, spark quality and orifice condition are checked in that order. Each result narrows the field, so the part that gets replaced is the part that failed a test rather than the part that was easiest to reach.
Replace and reassemble
1 to 4 hours
The failed component goes in, burner geometry is restored, and anything disturbed during access gets reseated properly. Burner cap alignment and thermocouple tip position are checked with the same care as the part itself.
Leak test and bake verification

The LP system holds pressure and every disturbed joint gets a soap check. Oven work adds a full logged bake cycle so temperature is proven rather than assumed. Both results go in the file before the coach is released.

Why it happened

- Oven thermostat calibration wandering with age, which reads as a broken oven and is actually an adjustment
- Burner cap misalignment after a cleaning, which is astonishingly common and takes about a minute to correct

What not to try yourself
- Drilling an orifice out to make a weak burner stronger. Orifice bores are sized for LP and enlarging one produces a flame that no longer burns completely.
- Bypassing a thermocouple to keep the oven lit. That safety valve exists to shut the gas off when there is no flame, and defeating it puts raw propane into a closed cabin.
- Chasing a leak with a lighter or a match. Use soap solution or an electronic detector, and if you smell gas with no flame present, close the tank valve first.
- Cleaning burner assemblies with a wire brush that leaves bristles behind. Those bristles end up in the venturi and produce the exact symptom you were trying to fix.

The part is cheap and the labor is short, and the reason people end up paying more than they should is that somebody sold them a safety valve first. The other one I love is four weak burners, because that is never four failures, that is one regulator, and the furnace and water heater are usually unhappy too if you go ask them.
Appendix: questions and answers
- Why does my RV oven light and then go out on its own?
- The thermocouple is not holding the safety valve open. When you press and hold the knob you are opening the valve manually. Once you release it, the thermocouple has to generate enough signal on its own to keep it there. A tired tip or one sitting outside the flame envelope drops the burner in about ten seconds.
- What causes a yellow flame on an RV cooktop burner?
- Restricted gas flow, almost always at the orifice or in the venturi. Dust, cooking residue and spider silk are the usual culprits, and coaches that sit in storage between trips collect all three. The flame goes yellow, lifts off the cap and sooties your cookware. Cleaning or replacing the orifice restores a tight blue cone.
- All my propane appliances got weaker at once. What is that?
- That pattern points at the two stage regulator rather than at any single appliance. Regulators drift with age and every device downstream weakens together. A manometer reading at the manifold confirms it in about ten minutes, and replacing the regulator restores the furnace, water heater and range in one repair.
- Can an RV oven that bakes unevenly be calibrated?
- Often yes. We probe actual cavity temperature against the dial at several set points. A consistent offset across all of them is a calibration adjustment. An offset that wanders during a single bake cycle means the thermostat is failing and needs replacement. Either way we verify with a logged bake before the coach leaves.
- Can I put a residential range in my RV kitchen?
- Rarely a good idea. Residential units are orificed for natural gas, they are heavier than the cabinet framing expects, and they lack the flame failure protection an RV appliance carries. Replacements should be LP rated RV appliances sized to the existing opening, with any fitment difference handled as cabinet work.
- I smell propane near the stove. What should I do first?
- Close the valve at the tank, open windows and roof vents, and do not operate any switch or igniter. Leave the coach and let it air out. Then bring it in for a pressure hold and joint by joint leak check. A faint smell only at ignition can be normal, but a persistent smell with no flame burning never is.
