Microwave and Convection Unit Repair for Coach Kitchens

Can an RV microwave be repaired or does it need replacing?
Both paths exist. Door interlocks, mounting hardware, trim kits and power supply faults are repairable, while a failed magnetron on a low cost over range unit usually favors replacement. The microwave is the appliance owners assume is the simplest thing in the coach and it is the one that fails for the widest range of reasons. It is a high voltage device bolted into a cabinet that flexes, fed by a power source that may be shore power, a generator or an inverter, and its behavior changes depending on which of those three is supplying it. That last part is where most confusion starts.
We get called for units that work perfectly at a campground with fifty amp service and act broken on the road. That is not a broken microwave. That is a power quality question wearing an appliance complaint, and it is worth resolving before anybody buys a new unit, because a new one will do exactly the same thing on the same inverter.
When the microwave is not the problem
A microwave draws hard and it draws in a way that exposes weakness elsewhere. Switching power supplies inside the control board expect a clean waveform, and a modified sine wave inverter does not provide one. The result is a unit that lights up on shore power and refuses on inverter, or one that starts and drops out when the rooftop air conditioner kicks in and pulls the line voltage down for a moment.
That distinction is worth an hour of diagnosis before anyone spends money on an appliance. We put a meter on the outlet that actually feeds the microwave and run the coach on shore power, then the generator, then the inverter. If the behavior changes with the source, the repair belongs in the electrical system and a new microwave would have inherited the same problem on the first trip.
Note
Pure sine inverters solve this category of complaint permanently. Modified sine units remain fine for resistive loads and remain unpredictable for anything with a switching supply behind it.
Inside the high voltage section
Behind the control panel sits a small group of components that turn line voltage into the several thousand volts a magnetron needs. A capacitor, a diode and the magnetron itself. When any one of them fails, the outward behavior is identical: everything else runs and nothing gets hot. That is why a proper diagnosis tests all three rather than guessing at the most famous one.
It is also why this is shop work. The capacitor retains a charge long after the unit is unplugged and it has to be deliberately discharged before a technician touches anything inside the case. There is no version of this job that is appropriate on a kitchen counter with the cord over a shoulder, and we would rather say that clearly than watch somebody find out.

The honest repair or replace math
On a built in convection combination unit the components are worth replacing, because the appliance carries real value and a matched replacement is expensive and sometimes slow to source. On an inexpensive over range unit, the magnetron and the labor to fit it come very close to the cost of a new appliance, and we will say that rather than sell hours that do not serve the owner.
The variable that surprises people is the opening. RV cabinet cutouts are not standardized the way residential ones are, and a replacement that is a half inch narrower needs filler and trim work to look right. We measure the opening at diagnosis and quote the fitment along with the appliance so the number in the estimate is the number at pickup.
Mounting, vibration and the cabinet around it
An over range microwave in a coach lives a harder life than the same unit in a house. Every expansion joint on the 91 and every dip on a canyon road works at the mounting hardware. Brackets loosen, the unit settles a few millimeters, and that settling is enough to change how the door meets the latch. The owner experiences an intermittent microwave. The actual fault is a cabinet that needs four bolts retorqued and a bracket reinforced.
We check mounting on every microwave that comes through, even when the complaint sounds purely electrical, because the correlation between a sagged unit and an interlock complaint is high enough that skipping it would be careless.
What this work costs
Microwave work bills at $260 per hour from the mechanical and electrical department and lands between $250 and $1,500. Interlock switches, latch service and mounting correction sit at the low end and are often done inside a single day. A convection combination replacement with fabricated trim and a squared cabinet opening reaches the top of the range.
Parts carry standard markup and sales tax applies to parts and materials, with labor untaxed. The $150 written estimate lays out the scope before authorization and is credited in full against a repair. Where the diagnosis points at the inverter or the circuit rather than the appliance, that work is quoted as its own line so nothing is buried.
Where we see these units
Nearly every coach built in the last two decades has an over range microwave, and the larger the unit the more likely it is a convection combination doing double duty as the only oven on board. Luxury fifth wheels and diesel pushers lean heavily on those combination units, which raises the stakes when one quits mid trip and makes a correct diagnosis worth more than a fast one.
When this turns into electrical work
Roughly a third of the microwave complaints we diagnose end up as inverter, transfer switch or branch circuit work. That is not a bad outcome. It means the owner gets a coach where the whole 120 volt system behaves properly rather than a new appliance with the same symptom. It does mean the job changes shape, so we re quote at that point rather than continue under an estimate written for an appliance.

- The unit is operated on shore power, generator and inverter with voltage and waveform behavior noted, because a third of these complaints are not appliance faults at all.

How the work runs
Reproduce on all three power sources

The complaint is confirmed on shore power, on the generator and on the inverter, with readings taken at the appliance outlet. This single comparison decides whether the job is an appliance repair or an electrical system repair, and it costs an hour to answer correctly.
Discharge and open

The unit comes out of the cabinet and the high voltage capacitor is discharged before anything is touched. That capacitor can hold a lethal charge after the unit is unplugged, which is exactly why this appliance does not belong on a kitchen counter with a screwdriver in it.
Test the high voltage chain

Capacitor, diode and magnetron are tested individually rather than swapped speculatively. The result determines whether a repair makes economic sense, and on inexpensive over range units the honest answer is frequently that it does not.
Repair or fit a replacement
1 to 3 hours
Component replacement happens on units where it pays. Otherwise a correctly sized replacement goes in, with trim, filler and bracket work handled so the finished cabinet looks like it left the factory that way.
Load test and cabinet check

The unit runs a full timed heat cycle with a water load, the door is cycled repeatedly to confirm interlock reliability, and the mounting is checked once more with the appliance hot and expanded.

What you will notice first
- The turntable spins and the fan runs but food comes out as cold as it went in
- The display is dead on inverter power and lights up normally on shore power
- A loud buzz or hum during operation that was never there before
- The unit runs for thirty seconds and shuts itself off before the timer ends
- The door has to be lifted or pushed to one side before the unit will start
- Sparking or arcing inside the cavity during normal use
- The convection function heats but the microwave function does not, or the reverse
- The whole unit has sagged in its opening and the trim no longer sits flush

Why it happened
- Magnetron failure, which produces the classic pattern of a unit that runs every accessory and produces no heat at all
- High voltage capacitor or diode failure, which presents the same way and has to be separated from a magnetron by test
- Door interlock switch wear, where one of the three switches no longer closes reliably as the latch engages
- Modified sine wave inverter output, which many microwave power supplies tolerate poorly and some refuse outright
- Voltage sag on a long or shared 120 volt run, especially when a rooftop air conditioner cycles on at the same time
- Mounting hardware backing out from road vibration, which lets the unit shift, bind the door and misalign the latch

What not to try yourself
- Opening the case at home to look around. The high voltage capacitor stores a charge capable of killing you after the cord is out of the wall, and it does not announce itself.
- Running the unit empty to test whether it heats. With no load the energy has nowhere to go and it damages the magnetron you are trying to evaluate.
- Taping or wedging a door latch to work around an interlock fault. Those three switches are the only thing standing between the cavity and the kitchen.
- Putting an over range residential microwave in an RV opening because the width matched. Depth, mounting method and ventilation are all different and the cabinet will not support it.

Appendix: questions and answers
- My RV microwave runs but nothing gets hot. What failed?
- Something in the high voltage section: the magnetron, the capacitor or the diode. All three produce identical outward behavior, so they have to be separated by test. On a premium convection unit that repair is worth doing. On a basic over range unit the parts and labor approach the cost of a new appliance.
- Why does my microwave only work when I am plugged in?
- Usually because the inverter produces a modified sine waveform that the microwave power supply will not accept. The appliance is fine. Confirm it by testing on shore power, generator and inverter in sequence. The fix is a pure sine inverter or a dedicated circuit, not a new microwave.
- Why do I have to push on the door to make the microwave start?
- One of the three door interlock switches is not closing reliably. That happens when the unit sags in its mounting, when the latch wears, or when the door itself twists. Replacing the switch set alone is a temporary fix if the mount is loose, so the mounting gets corrected at the same time.
- The inside of my microwave sparks. Is it safe to keep using?
- No. Stop using it. Arcing usually starts at a burned waveguide cover, which is a replaceable part. If the arcing has burned through the cavity wall paint to bare metal, the unit is finished regardless of what else is replaced. Either way it should not be run until it has been opened and inspected.
- Will a new microwave fit the hole the old one left?
- Not automatically. RV cabinet openings are not standardized, and replacement units are frequently a fraction narrower or shallower than what came out. We measure the opening during diagnosis and include any filler, trim or bracket fabrication in the estimate, so the finished cabinet looks intentional rather than patched.
- The convection side works but the microwave side does not. Why?
- They are two heating systems in one box. Convection uses a resistive element and a fan, which is a completely separate circuit from the magnetron and high voltage chain used for microwave cooking. One failing while the other works normally is expected behavior and points directly at which half needs testing.
