E-ONE Apparatus Repair on Extruded Aluminum Bodies

How is an E-ONE fire apparatus body repaired?

E-ONE built its reputation on all aluminum apparatus bodies, and thirty years later that decision is why these rigs are still repairable. Aluminum extrusion and plate are materials we can buy, cut and weld, which is a very different situation from a proprietary molded panel nobody makes anymore.

What apparatus work demands is discipline. Correct filler alloy, controlled heat, compartment integrity preserved, reflective layouts restored, and a clear line about what belongs to a body shop and what belongs to a certified aerial specialist.

Filler alloy and heat control on an apparatus body

Aluminum body repair on apparatus is not the same as aluminum body repair on a trailer. These bodies carry pump equipment, hose loads, tools and water weight, and the welds are structural. Filler alloy has to suit the base material, heat input has to be controlled so the heat affected zone does not become the new weak point, and joints get restored to the original section.

We fixture, control and document that work. Where a section is beyond repair we replace the section rather than building it up with weld metal, because a thick bead is not a substitute for sound material on a vehicle that will be loaded for the next fifteen years.

Compartment doors, shutters and water intrusion

A compartment that does not seal ruins equipment quietly. Roll up shutters bind or lose slats, hinged doors drop on worn hinges, and the seal at a compartment opening stops compressing when the opening has been deformed by an impact.

We measure openings, correct the structure, then fit or repair hardware, and we water test compartments before delivery. Departments store expensive tools in these spaces and a dry compartment is a maintenance saving that never appears on any invoice.

Reflective chevrons and warning device aiming

The rear chevron pattern and reflective striping on apparatus are safety equipment, not decoration, and they follow a defined layout that has to come back exactly after body work. Reflective material has to be the correct type, applied to a properly prepared surface, in the original geometry.

Warning lights disturbed during a repair get remounted and re aimed. We document the reflective layout before disassembly and photograph it afterwards, because a department putting a rig back in service needs evidence that the safety marking is intact.

Where our scope stops

If an incident involved an aerial device, a torque box or the ladder itself, that is not a body shop decision. Aerial structures require inspection and certification by specialists with the equipment and the authority to test them, and we say so rather than quoting work we should not do.

What we do is the body, the compartments, the cab sheet metal, the paint and the reflective marking. We will coordinate with an aerial specialist and sequence our work around their inspection so a department is not shuttling the rig back and forth.

Before you proceed

Any incident that loaded an aerial device or its torque box goes to a certified aerial inspection before the apparatus returns to service. Body and paint work does not substitute for that inspection.

Rates, downtime and our standing

Body, welding and refinish work bills at $210 per hour with paint supplies at $55 per paint hour. Electrical, warning device and mechanism work bills at $260. A written estimate is $150 and is credited in full when the repair is authorized. Municipal work is authorized against a purchase order referencing the scope.

OCRV Center is an independent shop with no dealer agreement or affiliation with E-ONE or REV Group. All work is performed in shop at Yorba Linda. Apparatus downtime is planned with the department so a reserve unit covers the station rather than a gap in coverage.

E-ONE builds in Ocala, Florida and pioneered extruded aluminum apparatus bodies, which is exactly why these units are repairable decades later: extrusion and plate aluminum are commodity materials, and compartment hardware from Amdor and similar suppliers is catalogued. Cab sheet metal and specific trim come through the E-ONE parts network. Aerial components are inspected and serviced by certified aerial specialists rather than by a body shop.

Appendix: questions and answers

Does filler alloy selection matter on an apparatus body weld?
Substantially, because these welds are structural under pump equipment, tool and water loads. The filler has to suit the base alloy and heat input has to be controlled so the heat affected zone does not become the weak point. We restore the original section rather than building up weld metal.
Our compartment leaks after a backing incident. Why?
Because the opening was deformed, so the seal no longer compresses evenly. Fitting a new seal to a distorted opening does nothing. We measure the opening, correct the structure, then repair or fit hardware and water test the compartment before the rig leaves.
Do you restore the rear chevron pattern after body work?
Yes, in the original geometry with the correct reflective material on a properly prepared surface. We document the layout before disassembly and photograph it afterwards. A department returning a rig to service needs evidence that the safety marking is intact, not an assurance.
Can you repair damage to an aerial ladder?
No, and we will tell you that directly. Aerial devices and torque boxes require inspection and certification by specialists with the authority and equipment to test them. We handle body, compartment, cab and paint work, and we sequence around the aerial inspection so the rig is not shuttled repeatedly.
How do you handle apparatus downtime for a department?
By planning it with the department before the rig arrives, so a reserve unit covers the station. Parts are ordered ahead where photographs allow. We give a return date and update it the day it changes, because station coverage is not something to improvise around.
Do you work on E-ONE bodies mounted on another chassis?
Yes, and the split matters for parts. An extruded aluminum body carries its own part numbering regardless of what it sits on, so body panels, compartment doors and hardware come through apparatus channels while cab and chassis items follow the chassis manufacturer. We identify both before scoping, because the two halves rarely arrive on the same schedule.
