Refuse bodies are the only vehicles in this building that are consumed by their own cargo. Grit, glass, metal and concrete rubble slide across a hopper floor under packer pressure hundreds of times a day, and the liquid that collects underneath everything is acidic and stays there. The outside of a refuse truck usually looks worse than it is. The inside is where the money goes.
The second half of the story is compaction load. A packer panel pushing a full body of compressed material puts thousands of pounds against a tailgate that is hinged to a body that is bolted to a frame that twists on every alley apron. Every one of those joints is being worked, and they fail in a fixed order we can predict before the truck arrives.

A refuse unit compacts its load with a hydraulic packer inside a sealed body. A dump truck carries loose material in an open bed and tips it. Both have body to frame issues, but abrasion, leachate corrosion and packer geometry belong to refuse bodies only.
A body destroyed by what it carries
Household and commercial waste is a mix of abrasives. Glass, grit, ceramic, concrete rubble and metal all get dragged across the hopper floor under packer pressure, hundreds of cycles per shift. Manufacturers fit abrasion resistant plate in the 400 Brinell class for exactly that reason, and that plate is a wear item with a service life rather than a permanent part of the body.
Underneath the abrasion is chemistry. Leachate collects at the low points and sits, and it is acidic enough to attack the structural floor once the wear plate has thinned. That is the sequence to remember: abrasion opens the door and corrosion does the real damage, from the side nobody inspects.

Tailgate hinge lugs and pin bores
Every compaction stroke pushes against the tailgate, and every dump swings its full weight on the hinge lugs. That is two entirely different load cases sharing the same hardware. The pin bore ovalizes first, which introduces slop, and once the load is no longer shared across the lugs evenly, one of them starts cracking.
The repair is boring and rebuilding rather than welding a crack shut. We machine or rebuild the bore to size, renew the pin and bushing, address the crack with proper preparation and reinforcement, then check tailgate alignment and seal contact through a full open and close cycle. Skipping the bore work leaves the same load imbalance that cracked it the first time.

Why the mounts behind the tandem go first
A packer body is a long, stiff box. A truck frame is designed to flex. Bolt them together and the relative movement is largest at the mounts furthest from the middle, which on a refuse chassis means the mounts behind the tandem. They lose clamp, the holes elongate, and then something cracks: the bracket, the mounting angle, or the rail flange underneath.
We check every mount for clamp and hole condition on any refuse truck that comes in for anything, because it takes twenty minutes and it is the finding that saves a frame. Where holes have elongated we repair or replace the bracket and fit correct hardware rather than fitting a larger bolt into a bigger hole, which is the field fix we see most often and the one that guarantees a return visit.
Before you proceed
A larger bolt in an elongated mounting hole is not a repair. It puts the same movement into a slightly wider hole and moves the crack from the bracket to the frame rail, which is a far more expensive part.
Compressed natural gas and hot work
A large share of refuse fleets run on compressed natural gas with tanks in a roof enclosure. That changes our sequence rather than our capability. Before any grinding, cutting or welding happens on the vehicle, we require the hauler to confirm the fuel state in writing: full, or defueled and purged, and by whom.
Body and structural work below the roof line goes ahead normally once that is documented. Work on or inside the enclosure frame itself is scoped separately and coordinated with the fleet, because the people who defuel and purge those systems are the right people to say when it is safe to put heat near them.
Empty, washed, and why we insist
Bodies arrive empty and washed out. That is a condition of intake, not a preference, and every hauler and city division we work with already has the wash capacity to meet it. A loaded or unwashed packer cannot be safely inspected, cannot be welded near, and turns a repair bay into a problem for everyone else in the building.
A $45 flat hazmat and disposal charge applies where contaminated residue or chemicals are involved in the work. We would rather state that plainly than bury it, and on a properly washed body it usually does not arise at all.
Route collisions and the camera footage that settles them
Refuse trucks hit things and get hit constantly, because they work in alleys, on narrow residential streets and around parked cars, with a body that is wider at the hopper than the mirrors suggest. Most of that damage is claimable, and most of it is disputed, which is why route camera footage matters more here than anywhere else in the fleet category.
We ask for the footage and the route log before we start. It takes a dispatcher ten minutes and it converts a he said conversation into a documented sequence, which is the difference between a supplement approved in three days and one that sits for three weeks.
Downtime, route coverage and turnaround
Refuse routes do not slide. A missed collection day generates calls to a city, so the release date matters more than the total price to almost every fleet manager in this segment. Plate and hopper floor work is generally four to nine shop days. Tailgate hinge and bore work runs one to two weeks. Mount and rail repair is one to three weeks depending on what the rail flange looks like.
There is no roadside program and no mobile repair service here, so units arrive at the Yorba Linda facility driven or towed. Haulers running the Rancho Santa Margarita side of the county typically send units up the 241 to the 91 between route shifts.

Will it fit in the shop?
A tandem axle packer at 66,000 lb GVWR stays on the slab, not on a lift, and the reason it can come inside at all is the sixteen foot door height: a refuse body needs vertical room for a raised tailgate, and we can raise one indoors to work on hinge lugs and seals rather than parking it in a yard. Bodies arrive empty and washed. On compressed natural gas units we require the fuel state in writing before anything hot happens on the vehicle, and roof enclosure work is scoped with the hauler rather than assumed.
Insurance considerations for this vehicle
- Abrasion, leachate corrosion and packer track wear are consumption rather than loss, and no carrier funds them. Haulers who understand that early build a plate renewal cycle into a maintenance budget instead of hoping a claim covers it.
- Collision damage on these units is genuinely claimable and genuinely common: parked car contact, low structure strikes and alley wall damage. The evidence that supports those claims is the route camera footage, so we ask for it before we start rather than after the panel is gone.
- Where a covered impact happens to a body that already had corroded floor structure, the two get separated in the estimate with photographs. Presenting them as one item is how a whole file stalls for a month.
Appendix: questions and answers
- The hopper floor has rusted through under the wear plate. How did that happen?
- In two stages. Abrasive material thinned the wear plate first, then leachate reached the structural floor beneath it and corroded it from the hidden face. The truck keeps working through both stages, which is why it is normally found late. We renew plate and repair or replace the structural floor underneath it.
- Can a cracked tailgate hinge lug just be welded up?
- Not on its own. The pin bore has almost certainly ovalized, and that slop is what stopped the lugs sharing load evenly in the first place. We measure ovality at every lug, rebuild bores to size, renew pins and bushings as a set, then repair and reinforce the crack, then cycle and check seal contact.
- Our packer panel binds at the same point every stroke. Is that hydraulic?
- Usually not. Guide tracks welded into the body walls wear locally where the panel dwells, and grit in the body acts as lapping compound. The panel then binds at that point every cycle. We measure track wear along the stroke and repair or renew the affected sections rather than chasing pressure.
- Can we just fit a bigger bolt where the body mount hole has elongated?
- Please do not. A larger bolt puts identical movement into a wider hole and relocates the crack from the bracket to the frame rail, which costs several times as much to fix. We repair or replace the bracket, restore the hole to size and refit correct hardware with proper clamp.
- Can you weld on a CNG refuse truck?
- Yes, with the fuel state confirmed in writing first: full, or defueled and purged, and by whom. Structural and body work below the roof line then proceeds normally. Work on or inside the roof tank enclosure frame is scoped separately and coordinated with whoever handles defueling for the fleet.
- Does the body have to be emptied and washed before delivery?
- Yes, and it is a condition of intake. A loaded or unwashed packer cannot be safely inspected or welded near, and it affects every other job in the building.
