Video From Inside the Shop, and What a Camera Can Actually Show You

What kind of video does OCRV Center record during a repair?

A photograph is a claim about a moment. Some faults are not moments. A slide room that racks two degrees over the last eight inches of travel is a sequence, and so is a leak that only appears when water sits against a seam for four minutes at a particular angle. For those, a clip is the honest record and a still is not.
This page explains what gets filmed, why, and where footage stops being evidence and becomes decoration. If you are shopping shops from home, the second part is probably the more useful half.
Slide cycling, recorded end to end
A slide room is filmed through full travel in both directions, twice, with the camera positioned to see the rail and the room edge together. What you are looking for is not whether it moves. It is whether both sides arrive at the same time, whether the room edge stays parallel to the opening, and whether the motor note changes at any point in the run. On a Schwintek IN-WALL system a change in note near the end of travel usually means gear pack wear rather than a motor problem.
The clip is recorded before teardown and again after reassembly, and both go in the file. That pairing is what lets an owner see the difference rather than take our word for it, and it is also what tells us whether a room that was racking has genuinely stopped. Cycling a room once proves nothing, which is why the after clip is always the second cycle and not the first.
Water testing, filmed from both sides at once
After any repair that touched a seam, an opening or a roof penetration, the unit gets water tested, and the test is recorded with two cameras: one outside showing where water is being applied, one inside showing the area under suspicion. Filming both sides together removes the argument. A drip that appears inside while the hose is on the front cap seam is located, and a dry interior through a full test is documented rather than asserted.
The order matters and it is visible in the footage. Testing starts low and works up, because water applied at the roof first will run everywhere and tell you nothing about where it entered. Owners chasing a leak for two seasons have usually been doing it in the opposite order, which is why the leak keeps moving.
Booth footage, and why it is mostly about sequence
Refinish footage looks impressive and teaches very little about quality, so what we record instead is sequence. A full coach in the 60 foot booth is sprayed in a planned order, with the panel breaks and the blend zones decided before the gun is picked up, and the clip shows that plan being followed. Where a repair blends into an adjacent panel, the footage shows where the blend starts and how far it carries.
The one genuinely informative thing in booth footage is masking. On a coach, masking is most of the labor and all of the risk, and a clip of a properly masked unit with the glass, the seals, the awning rail and the lower skirt protected is a fair proxy for how careful the department is. That is the frame worth pausing on.
Systems footage: load, draw and response
Electrical and generator faults are recorded with the meter in frame, because a number read aloud is worth nothing and a number visible next to the assembly it came from is worth a great deal. On an Onan set that drops the load under air conditioning demand, the clip shows the voltage sag, the moment of the drop and the reset behavior together, which is the difference between a fuel delivery diagnosis and a governor diagnosis.
Parasitic draw hunts get filmed too, usually as a series of short clips as circuits come out one at a time. Diagnostic time bills at $285 per hour with a one hour minimum and is credited against an authorized repair, so it is in everyone's interest that the record shows exactly what was tested and in what order rather than an hour described in a sentence.
Where video stops being useful
No clip can tell you whether a wall was rebuilt correctly, because the interesting part happened before the camera arrived and is now behind a skin. No clip establishes structure, which is measurement work and lives on a printed comparison sheet. And no clip is a substitute for an inspection: assessing a unit you are thinking of buying means tapping panels, probing substrate, reading a data plate and putting a meter on things, none of which travels through a lens.
So we do not offer a remote assessment based on footage you send, and there is no video walkaround service in place of coming in. What a clip you send is good for is triage, meaning we can often tell you which department the job belongs to and roughly what an inspection is going to look at. That saves you a trip in the wrong direction.
Appendix: questions and answers
- Can I ask for my slide to be filmed before and after?
- Yes, and on slide work it happens by default. Ask at intake for anything else with moving parts: awnings, entry steps, leveling jacks, generator start and load. There is no separate charge for recording. The clips arrive with the rest of your file rather than as a separate deliverable you have to chase.
- Should I send you a video of the problem before I come in?
- It genuinely helps. A ten second clip of a slide stalling, a generator surging or a pump cycling tells us more than a paragraph does, and it often decides which department schedules the work. What it cannot do is replace an inspection, since bond failure, wet substrate and frame movement are found by hand rather than on screen.
- Will you do a live video call to look at my damage?
- We will talk through a clip you send and tell you what it suggests. What we will not do is issue an assessment or a scope from a screen, because a camera cannot tap a panel or measure a control point. Every estimate is written in shop, billed at $150, and credited in full against an authorized repair.
- Where do the public clips live?
- On the shop YouTube channel, with shorter cuts on the other social accounts. Anything published has plates and identifying graphics removed, and commercial or municipal units are generally left out entirely. Your own repair footage stays private unless you specifically ask for it to be used.
- Can I watch my coach being painted?
- Not from inside the booth. A downdraft booth in operation is a controlled environment with airflow, temperature and solvent management, and an extra person in it changes all three. We film the passes instead and you get the clips. Walkthroughs of the building outside of active spray happen by appointment.
