Six Measurements to Take Before You Book a Body Shop

What measurements does a body shop need before booking an RV?

Owners call and ask if their coach will fit. Almost every time, the number they quote is from a brochure, and brochures list the roof line rather than the top of the air conditioner shroud. That gap is usually eight to fourteen inches, and on a tall unit it decides whether a door clearance conversation is trivial or serious. It is worth twenty minutes with a tape before you commit to a date.
There are six measurements that matter to a shop. Below is how to take each one, why it matters to a specific piece of equipment, and what happens on the estimate when a unit does not fit a booth in one piece. Take them once, write them on the inside of a cabinet door, and never have this conversation again.
The six numbers and how to take them
Do this on level ground with the unit at normal ride height and the slides in. Air suspension coaches should be at travel height, not kneeling, because a kneeling coach reads shorter than the one that has to drive through a door. Use a real tape and a helper rather than a laser against a curved surface.
- Write the date and whether slides were in on the same note as the numbers
- Photograph the chassis tag while you are there; it carries GVWR, axle ratings and the VIN
- If a roof rack or solar array was added after purchase, remeasure height rather than trusting the brochure
- Overall length: front bumper face to the rearmost point, including a spare carrier, a hitch receiver or a bike rack you intend to leave on
- Overall height: ground to the highest point on the roof, which is normally the air conditioner shroud, a satellite dome or a raised fan lid
- Overall width: across the widest point with mirrors extended, including awning rails and slide topper rails
- Slide projection: from the sidewall face to the outer face of the room, fully extended, on the widest room
- Wheelbase and rear overhang: axle centers and the distance from the rear axle to the rearmost point
- Gross weight: the actual weight if you have a scale ticket, otherwise the GVWR from the chassis tag
What each number decides on our floor
Height decides door access, which is why it is first. Our bay doors give 16 foot clear, so almost nothing in the recreational range is a problem, but a bus conversion with a roof deck or an apparatus with a light bar can get close. Length decides booth scheduling. The downdraft booth is 60 feet long, which means a full size coach sprays as one unit and there is no break line down the middle of a repaired panel.
Width and slide projection decide bay spacing, because a slide room has to be able to come out on stands next to the unit without touching the next vehicle. Wheelbase, overhang and weight decide which lift or which set of stands is appropriate, and on a heavy chassis they decide anchoring for frame work. None of this is exotic; it is just information that saves a wasted trip up the 241.
What happens when something genuinely does not fit
Two things change. First, a refinish gets sectioned, which means the unit is sprayed in stages with a masked break placed at a body line or a moulding rather than in open panel. A well placed break is nearly invisible; a badly placed one is a permanent flaw. Second, the labor goes up, because masking, re prepping and re tacking between stages is real time and each stage is its own cure cycle.
The other case is a unit that fits the building but not the process. A 45 foot coach with a rear mounted spare and a receiver mounted cargo box measures long enough to complicate a booth cycle, and the fix is usually removing accessories rather than sectioning the job. We would rather spend thirty minutes pulling a rack than spray a coach in two halves.
On cost
A sectioned refinish adds masking, re prep and an extra cure cycle. Where accessories can come off instead, that is always the cheaper answer and we will say so.
Commercial units, apparatus and tall builds
Work trucks and municipal units bring their own dimension problems, and they are usually vertical. A bucket truck with the boom stowed, a street sweeper with a hopper, a fire apparatus with a light bar and antenna farm, and a box truck with a roof mounted reefer unit all have a real height that has nothing to do with the cab. Fleet managers who send us a spec sheet rather than a model name get a straight answer the same day.
Weight matters more in this category too. Anchoring for a frame pull on a heavy chassis is a different setup from a motorhome, and the scale ticket determines it. Send the ticket if you have one. If the unit runs on air suspension, tell us whether it dumps, because a unit that can drop two inches has more options than one that cannot.
Sending the numbers with your photographs
Put the six numbers in the same message as your damage photographs. It lets us confirm bay and booth availability while the scope is being written rather than afterward, and it removes the single most common cause of a rescheduled drop off. If you are not sure about one of them, say which one and we will work with a range instead of a guess.
Owners driving in from Rancho Santa Margarita usually take the 241 to the 91, which avoids the surface street turns through Anaheim Hills and is the easiest run for anything over about 30 feet. Knowing your height before that trip matters more than knowing your length, because the freeway is forgiving and structure clearances are not.
Appendix: questions and answers
- Why is my brochure height wrong for shop purposes?
- Because manufacturers commonly publish a roof line figure, sometimes without the air conditioner, and always without anything you added later. A shroud, a satellite dome, a raised vent lid or a solar array all sit above that line. Measure to the highest physical point with a tape and use that number for every clearance question.
- Should I measure width with the slides in or out?
- Both, and label them. Travel width with slides in decides whether the unit can move through the yard. Extended width decides whether a room can come out on stands in the bay, which matters on any slide mechanism job. The extended number is the one shops forget to ask for and then need on day one.
- What if I have never weighed the unit?
- Use the GVWR off the chassis tag and tell us it is a rating rather than an actual weight. For most body and paint work that is sufficient. For frame correction or anything involving lifting, an actual scale ticket is worth getting, because a coach loaded for full time living can sit thousands of pounds away from its empty figure.
- Will you remove roof racks or a cargo carrier to make a unit fit?
- Yes, and it is usually the cheaper path. Removing and refitting an accessory is an hour or two of body time, while sectioning a refinish adds masking, an extra prep stage and another cure cycle. We quote both when a unit is borderline so you can see the difference before choosing.
