Travel Supreme Repair for Coaches and Full Paint Fifth Wheels

Written by Claims Coordinator, Insurance Claims Coordinator, OCRV Center. Reviewed by Refinish Department Lead

In shortTravel Supreme built both diesel pushers and painted fifth wheels in Wakarusa until 2008. The towable front caps are the hardest orphaned part in the range and are rebuilt on the unit.

Can a Travel Supreme still be repaired after the company closed?

Yes, through rebuild rather than replacement. Travel Supreme closed in 2008, so our Yorba Linda shop repairs the original caps and panels on coaches and fifth wheels for Rancho Santa Margarita owners while sourcing chassis parts through Spartan and Freightliner.

  • Select, Alante and Envoy are diesel pushers
  • The fifth wheels carried full body paint, not decals
  • No coach or trailer specific parts remain available
  • Front caps are repaired or molded from the existing panel

Travel Supreme is unusual on this list because it built both ends of the market: diesel pushers and fifth wheels finished to coach standards. The trailers in particular were painted rather than decaled, which put them a tier above almost everything else towable at the time.

The company closed in 2008. What remains is a population of well built units with no parts source, and the specific problem of a fifth wheel front cap in a shape nobody else ever made. That is a fabrication and refinish problem, and it is solvable.

01

The front cap problem on the fifth wheels

A fifth wheel front cap takes the worst of everything: road debris thrown by the tow vehicle, pin box loads transmitted into the structure behind it, and flex every time the rig articulates. On a Travel Supreme that cap was a low volume molding, and no replacement exists at any price.

So we repair it. Cracks are ground back to sound laminate, rebuilt with cloth and resin, faired and refinished. Where damage is extensive, we can take a mold off the sound portion of the panel and lay up a replacement section rather than trying to source one. That is real hours and it is the only honest path.

02

Why full body paint helps an orphaned unit

Owners of decaled trailers from the same era have a real problem: the graphic package is out of print and a modern substitute looks wrong. Travel Supreme owners escape that entirely, because the finish was paint. Paint can always be matched, mapped and reproduced regardless of what happened to the company that applied it.

The catch is age. A twenty year old painted surface has moved from its original formula, so matching is done against the panel rather than a code, with spray out cards confirmed in daylight. Upper surfaces frequently need clear replaced over a wider area than the damage, because blending into failing clear does not hold.

03

The coaches and their supported chassis

Select, Alante, Envoy and Classic coaches used Spartan and Freightliner chassis, both of which are still fully supported. That means suspension, brake, steering and air system work behaves normally, with published dimensions available for rack setup and parts arriving on commercial timelines.

House systems are equally serviceable, because appliances, generators and slide hardware came from suppliers who are still in business. The orphaned portion is strictly the coach shell: caps, skins, glass and moldings. Splitting the estimate along that line gives owners a realistic view of what is fast and what is slow.

04

Landing gear, pin boxes and fatigue on the towables

These fifth wheels were heavy for their era, and the mounts that carry that weight have now been cycling for two decades. Landing gear mount fatigue shows as a crack in the frame web near the leg, sometimes hidden behind an underbelly panel. Pin box wear shows as movement you can feel at the hitch.

We inspect and repair those as structure, welding to the original section rather than plating over a crack. Underbelly panels come off for access, because a fatigue crack found from underneath is a repair while the same crack found after it propagates is a frame job.

05

What working with us looks like

A written estimate is $150, credited in full when the repair is authorized. Body, mold and refinish work bills at $210 per hour. Mechanical work is $260. Sourcing and diagnostics is $285 per hour with a one hour minimum. Deposits are 50 percent over $2,000, with a further 25 percent at parts arrival over $10,000.

OCRV Center is an independent shop and never had any connection to Travel Supreme. Everything happens in shop at Yorba Linda. On an orphaned unit that is essential, since taking a mold off a damaged cap and laying up a section are both building operations rather than field operations.

Lines

Travel Supreme lines we work on

  • Select and Select Limited diesel pushers
  • Alante and Envoy coaches
  • Classic, the upper range pusher
  • Travel Supreme fifth wheels with full body paint
  • Spartan and Freightliner chassis across the coach range

Parts. Travel Supreme closed in Wakarusa, Indiana in 2008, so nothing coach or trailer specific remains orderable. Spartan and Freightliner chassis components are still supported through their own networks. The hardest items are the fifth wheel front caps, which were unusual shapes in small volumes, and those are repaired or molded from the existing panel rather than replaced.

Failures

What we see on this brand

  • Fifth wheel front cap cracking at the pin box area
  • Full body paint failure on upper surfaces
  • Sidewall bond release around slide openings
  • Landing gear mount fatigue on the towables
  • Compartment door hardware failure with no replacement parts
Appendix

Appendix: questions and answers

Can a Travel Supreme fifth wheel front cap be replaced?
Not purchased, no. The molding was low volume and the company closed in 2008. What we can do is repair the cracks properly or take a mold off the sound section and lay up a replacement piece. That is more work than bolting on a part, and it is the only path that actually exists.
Is a painted fifth wheel easier to repair than a decaled one?
On an orphaned unit, considerably. Paint can be matched and reproduced forever. A discontinued decal package cannot be reprinted, and a modern vinyl substitute next to aged gelcoat is obvious. That is one reason these trailers have aged better than their contemporaries.
Are the Spartan chassis parts on a Select still available?
Yes. Spartan and Freightliner both still support their chassis regardless of what happened to the coach builder. Suspension, brake, steering and air components arrive on normal commercial timelines, and published dimensions exist for rack setup. The orphaned half is strictly the coach shell.
How do you repair a cracked landing gear mount?
By welding to the original section rather than plating over the crack. The underbelly comes off for access, the crack is prepared and welded, and the area is reinforced only where the original design was marginal. Plating over a fatigue crack hides it and moves the failure a few inches.
Is a twenty year old Travel Supreme worth restoring?
Frequently yes, because the build quality was high and the paint reproduces well. The deciding factor is water. Dry framing and sound floors make restoration sensible. Wet sidewalls across multiple bays usually do not return the money, and we say so in writing before teardown.
