Nexus RV Repair and the Factory Direct Parts Advantage

Written by Structural Repair Lead, Structural and Frame Lead, OCRV Center. Reviewed by RV Systems Lead

In shortNexus sells factory direct from Elkhart, so a damaged panel is ordered from the plant that molded it. Coaches are steel and aluminum tube framed with fiberglass skins over cutaway chassis.

How does Nexus RV repair differ from other Class C brands?

Nexus repair benefits from factory direct sales: parts requests go straight to the Elkhart plant instead of through a dealer. At our Yorba Linda shop that shortens the wait on cap and skin pieces for Rancho Santa Margarita owners of a Phantom, Viper or Ghost.

  • Phantom and Viper sit on the Ford E-450 cutaway
  • Triumph uses the Ford F-550, Ghost the Freightliner M2
  • Tube framed construction with bonded fiberglass skins
  • No dealer layer between the owner and the plant

Nexus is a younger company than most on this list, founded in Elkhart in the early 2010s, and it does one thing that materially helps a repair: it sells direct. There is no dealer between the owner and the plant, which means a parts conversation is one call rather than three.

The coaches themselves are conventional in the best sense. Tube framed, fiberglass skinned, on Ford cutaway or Freightliner chassis. Nothing exotic, which keeps repair predictable when a cabover cracks or a cutaway cab takes a hit.

01

What factory direct means when a panel is damaged

In the normal recreational vehicle model, a shop asks a dealer, the dealer asks the manufacturer, and everyone waits twice. Nexus removed that layer. We describe the damage and the serial number to the plant and get an answer about availability the same day, which is unusual enough to be worth saying out loud.

It does not make freight faster. A molded cap still ships on a truck and still takes weeks. What it removes is the guessing period, and that period is where most schedules quietly slip. Knowing on day one that a part exists lets us decide between waiting and repairing.

02

Tube framed walls with bonded fiberglass skin

Nexus builds with welded steel and aluminum tube framing and bonds fiberglass over it, rather than relying on a fully vacuum pressed sandwich. For repair that is a middle case. Damage transmits into the tube, which is straightforward to straighten or replace, and the skin is bonded rather than laminated into the structure.

So the repair sequence is: open the skin, address the tube, reskin and refinish. It avoids the large bond release footprint of a fully laminated wall while still giving a smooth painted exterior. On a Class C with a cracked cabover this is usually simpler work than the same damage on a laminated coach.

03

Cutaway chassis damage and where two suppliers meet

A Phantom or Viper starts as a Ford E-450 cutaway: a cab and a bare frame behind it. The cab is a Ford part, supported by every Ford commercial dealer, so doors, fenders, glass and lighting are quick. The house is Nexus. The joint between them is sealed and it is the first place to check on any coach with an interior stain.

On a Ghost the same logic applies with a Freightliner M2 cab. On a Wraith it is a Ford Transit, which is a unibody and therefore a different structural procedure entirely. We identify which of the three you have before quoting, because the front half of the estimate changes completely.

04

House systems and what bills at the mechanical rate

Nexus specifies conventional house equipment: Dometic or Furrion appliances, Suburban water heating, Onan generators on the larger coaches, Lippert slide hardware where a slide is fitted. All of that is supported by its own manufacturer network regardless of what happens to any coach builder.

Those repairs bill at $260 per hour rather than the body rate, and an intermittent electrical fault is diagnosed at $285 per hour with a one hour minimum credited against the repair. Keeping systems work on separate authorizations from collision work is deliberate, because mixing them invites a carrier to reject the whole file.

05

Rates and our relationship to the builder

Body and refinish is $210 per hour with body supplies at $5 per body hour. Mechanical is $260. A written estimate is $150, credited in full when the repair is authorized. Parts at or under $100 carry 100 percent markup and parts over $100 carry 35 percent, with sales tax on parts and materials only.

OCRV Center is independent and has no agreement, franchise or affiliation with Nexus RV. We order from the plant the same way an owner can. Every repair is performed at the Yorba Linda facility, roughly twenty minutes from Rancho Santa Margarita by way of the 241.

Lines

Nexus RV lines we work on

  • Phantom Class C on the Ford E-450 cutaway
  • Viper and Rebel compact Class C coaches
  • Triumph on the Ford F-550 chassis
  • Ghost Super C on the Freightliner M2
  • Wraith on the Ford Transit platform
  • Bentley, the earlier Class B plus build

Parts. Nexus sells factory direct out of Elkhart, Indiana rather than through a dealer network, which changes parts sourcing in a useful way: we order from the plant that built the coach instead of routing a request through a dealer who has to route it again. Cutaway chassis parts come from Ford. Fiberglass and cap pieces come from Elkhart on freight timelines.

Failures

What we see on this brand

  • Cabover fiberglass cracking above the windshield
  • Cutaway cab to house joint sealant separation
  • Rear cap crack propagation at the ladder mount
  • Entry step frame damage from curb contact
  • Roof penetration sealant failure around vents and fans
Appendix

Appendix: questions and answers

Can you order Nexus parts directly from the plant?
Yes, and that is one of the genuine advantages of the brand. Nexus sells direct, so a parts request goes to Elkhart rather than through a dealer intermediary. Availability answers come back quickly, which lets us decide between waiting on a molded piece and repairing the one on the coach.
How are Nexus walls built and how does that change a repair?
Welded steel and aluminum tube framing with fiberglass bonded over it. Damage goes into the tube, which straightens or gets replaced, and the skin is removed and rebonded. That avoids the wide bond release footprint of a fully laminated sandwich wall, so the repair area is usually smaller.
What does a Phantom cabover crack repair cost to put right?
It is body department work at $210 per hour, and the hours depend on whether the framing behind the skin moved. Surface cracking with sound tube framing is a short job. A strike that deformed the tube means opening the area, straightening, reskinning and refinishing, which is a multi day scope.
Are cab parts on an E-450 based Nexus easy to get?
Very. The cab is a Ford commercial part supported by any Ford truck dealer, so doors, fenders, glass and lamps are days rather than weeks. The house body behind the cab is the slower half. We schedule the two so the coach is not sitting in a bay waiting on freight.
Is a Transit based Wraith repaired differently from a Phantom?
Structurally yes. A Transit is a unibody, so correction is measurement against factory control points rather than pulling a cutaway frame. The house construction is similar in principle but lighter. We confirm which platform you have before quoting, since the front half of the work is not comparable.
