Grand Design Repair: Azdel Walls and Six Point Hydraulics
Written by Structural Repair Lead, Structural and Frame Lead, OCRV Center. Reviewed by RV Systems Lead
In shortGrand Design standardized on Azdel composite substrate and six point hydraulic leveling, and its parts operation is among the better ones. Both facts shorten a repair compared with older towables.
What makes Grand Design repairs more predictable?
Two things: Azdel composite substrate throughout the walls, which resists moisture better than lauan, and a parts operation that ships to dealers directly. For Rancho Santa Margarita owners that means a Yorba Linda repair with fewer surprises behind the skin and shorter waits.

Grand Design is a young company by the standards of this list, founded in 2012 and acquired by Winnebago four years later, and it shows up in our bays in better condition than its contemporaries. Two decisions are responsible: composite substrate in the walls and hydraulics rather than in wall electric drives on the big rooms.
That does not make these trailers immune to anything. It means the failures we see are the ones towing and weather cause rather than the ones construction causes, which is a meaningfully different repair conversation.
Why composite substrate changes a water repair
In a conventional laminated wall, the substrate behind the fiberglass is lauan, a thin wood ply that soaks up water and loses structure once it does. When a sealant joint fails on that wall, the repair is substrate replacement across the wet area. Grand Design uses Azdel composite instead, which does not absorb moisture in the same way.
So on these trailers a leak that would have gutted a lauan wall frequently becomes a dry out and re bond instead. The bond can still release and the panel still has to be sounded and mapped, but what we find behind the skin is usually salvageable. That single material choice is the difference between a two day repair and a two week one.
Hydraulic slides and six point leveling
Solitude and Momentum use hydraulic through frame drives on the main rooms rather than electric in wall systems, and a six point hydraulic leveling system on the larger units. Hydraulics are heavier and more expensive and they do not chew rails, which is why we rarely see the tooth wear that dominates lighter trailers.
What hydraulics do is leak. A cylinder rod seal weeping, a fitting seeping at the pump manifold, or a leveling jack that settles overnight are the symptoms. Diagnosis is a pressure test of the circuit rather than a parts swap, and repair is seal and cylinder work at $260 per hour.
Front caps and the debris stream
A Solitude spends its life behind a diesel truck at highway speed, which means the front cap eats whatever the truck's rear tires throw. Peppering across the lower cap is normal wear. Impact from a larger object is a repair, and the question is always whether the laminate is punctured or only the gelcoat is chipped.
Gelcoat damage over sound laminate is repaired, faired and refinished at a fraction of the cost of a molded cap plus freight. Punctures through the laminate get rebuilt from both sides where access allows. Either way we recommend a front shield afterwards to owners who tow the 15 and the 40 regularly.
Parts support since the Winnebago acquisition
Grand Design's parts operation is better than the towable average. Records are good for a company this young, dealer direct shipping shortens the chain, and non structural items usually arrive within a normal work week. Underbelly panels, compartment doors, glass and interior hardware are rarely a problem.
Molded caps are still molded caps. They ship freight from Indiana on a multi week timeline, and paint adds to it. We confirm availability before writing the scope and quote the repair alternative next to the replacement, so an owner with a schedule can make a real choice.
Rates and our position
Body, cap and refinish work bills at $210 per hour with body supplies at $5 per body hour. Hydraulic, slide, appliance and electrical work is $260. A written estimate is $150, credited in full when the repair is authorized. Parts over $100 carry 35 percent markup and sales tax applies to parts and materials only.
OCRV Center is an independent shop with no dealer or brand relationship involving Grand Design or Winnebago Industries. All work is performed in shop at Yorba Linda. A 41 foot fifth wheel fits the bays and the booth, which is the practical question most owners of these units ask first.
Grand Design RV lines we work on
- Solitude, the flagship fifth wheel
- Reflection fifth wheels and travel trailers
- Momentum toy hauler fifth wheels
- Imagine and Imagine XLS travel trailers
- Transcend Xplor entry level trailers
- Influence, the high end fifth wheel line
- Lineage, the motorized entry on a van chassis
Parts. Grand Design has been part of Winnebago Industries since 2016 and runs one of the better parts operations among towable builders, with dealer direct shipping and reasonably deep records for a company founded in 2012. Azdel composite substrate is used across the range, which simplifies water damage repair. Molded caps still ship freight from Middlebury, Indiana on multi week timelines.
What we see on this brand
- Front cap stone damage on freeway towed fifth wheels
- Slide seal wear on wide Solitude living room rooms
- Roof membrane damage around bonded penetrations
- Hydraulic leveling and slide cylinder leaks
- Underbelly panel damage from road debris
Appendix: questions and answers
- If my Grand Design wall got wet, does the substrate need replacing?
- Often not. Azdel composite does not absorb water the way lauan ply does, so a wall that would have been gutted on an older trailer can frequently be dried and re bonded. We still sound the panel to map any bond release, since a released bond has to be pressed back or reskinned regardless.
- My Solitude slide leaves an oily mark. What is leaking?
- Usually a cylinder rod seal or a fitting at the manifold. Hydraulic slides do not wear rails the way electric in wall drives do, they weep. We pressure test the circuit to locate it rather than replacing components in sequence, then rebuild the seal or cylinder involved.
- Why do my leveling jacks settle overnight?
- A leak somewhere in the leveling circuit, most often a valve or a cylinder seal. Six point systems hold pressure when they are healthy. Diagnosis is a pressure and drop test on each leg, which isolates the failing component instead of guessing across six of them.
- Should a peppered Solitude front cap be repaired or replaced?
- Repaired, in almost every case. Peppering is gelcoat damage over sound laminate, and repairing, fairing and refinishing costs far less than a molded cap plus freight and paint. Replacement makes sense when the laminate is punctured widely or the mounting flange is damaged.
- How quickly do Grand Design parts actually arrive?
- Non structural items usually within a normal work week, which is better than the towable average. Molded caps ship freight from Indiana on a multi week timeline and painted pieces take longer. We confirm before writing the scope and price the repair option alongside replacement.
