The Adjuster Visit Where Nothing Was Measured

What happens if an adjuster does not measure the damage?

The coach was a 40 foot gas motorhome that had been struck on the right front by a delivery van pulling out of a lot. The bumper fascia was cracked, the right headlight assembly was displaced, and there was a diagonal wrinkle in the sheet metal above the wheel arch that anyone who has done this work reads as a load path, not a dent.

The field appraiser arrived, walked the front, photographed the fascia and the light, wrote up a fascia replacement, a light assembly, and refinish time, and left after nineteen minutes. He was courteous and he was working within a system. He also produced a document that contained no dimension of any kind, on a vehicle where the entire question was whether the front structure had moved.

Why one wrinkle changed the whole file

Sheet metal wrinkles where load has to go somewhere. A crack in a bumper fascia tells you an object hit a plastic part. A diagonal wrinkle rising from the wheel arch toward the A pillar tells you the load did not stop at the plastic, and that something behind the fascia transferred it into the body.

On a Class A gas chassis, the front structure is a welded assembly carrying the cab, the radiator support and the front suspension mounting. Movement there does not present as a bent piece you can point at. It presents as a headlight that will not line up, a door gap that changed by a sixteenth, and tire wear that starts eight months later. All of which are consequences, and none of which are visible on the day of the appraisal.

What the rack actually does

The unit goes onto anchoring and gets tied down at defined points, not wherever a clamp happens to fit. A measuring system then establishes a datum plane and compares reference points against published dimensions, or against symmetry where published data does not exist. What comes out is a sheet of numbers with tolerances beside them, and the numbers either fall inside tolerance or they do not. There is no interpretation step.

On this coach the right front reference sat 0.6 inch rearward and 0.2 inch high relative to its opposite side. Six tenths of an inch is nothing you can see and it is well outside tolerance for a front structure. That is the entire argument, and it is not an argument at all once the sheet exists. It is arithmetic.

Why measurement gets skipped, and it is not laziness

A field appraiser handles a queue of vehicles a day across a wide territory. He does not carry a measuring system and he cannot put a 40 foot coach on anchoring in a parking lot. His job at that visit is to document what is visible and set a starting figure. Measurement is a shop operation and everybody in the industry knows it.

The problem is not that the appraiser did not measure. It is that the appraisal reads as complete, and an owner holding it has no way to know that the most consequential question about his vehicle was not addressed. Nineteen minutes produced a document that is accurate about the fascia and silent about the structure.

How measurement gets onto the file

We ask for authorization for structural teardown measurement as a discrete operation, billed at the diagnostic rate of $285 per hour with a one hour minimum and credited in full against an authorized repair. The request names what we expect to find and why an image cannot answer it. On this file the request ran two sentences and it was authorized the same afternoon, which is the usual outcome when the ask is specific.

The output goes into the file as a printed sheet, not as a sentence in an email. That distinction matters more than it should. A reviewer reading a supplement will accept a signed measurement sheet with tolerances almost automatically. The same information described in prose invites a question, and a question costs two days.

On the claim

If a coach has a wrinkle, a changed gap or a light that no longer aligns, ask for structural measurement in writing before repair begins. Establishing displacement after parts are replaced is far harder than establishing it before.

What the numbers changed

The approved scope went from three operations to eleven. Setup and measurement, two pulls with the coach on anchoring, a re measurement between pulls, replacement of a deformed radiator support bracket, corrosion treatment at the welds, and realignment of the headlight and door aperture followed. The fascia and the light were still on the list. They were now the small part of the job.

The owner's reaction was the one we hear most often, which is discomfort. A scope that grew from three operations to eleven sounds like somebody is inventing work. Nothing was invented. The vehicle carried that damage from the moment of impact, through the appraisal, and into our bay. All that changed is that somebody finally wrote it down in units of measurement instead of adjectives.

What to ask for, in plain words

You do not need to know anything about frame geometry to handle this well. You need to ask three questions and get the answers in writing, which any adjuster will provide when the question is put directly. Owners who ask these on day two end up with materially better files than owners who ask on day thirty, and the reason is simply that day two is before anything has been taken apart.

Put them in an email rather than on a call. Not because anyone is untrustworthy, but because an email creates the record, and a record is what a later reviewer reads. A verbal yes from a field appraiser is worth exactly as much as the note somebody made about it, which is often nothing.

When there is no published dimension to compare against

This comes up constantly on coaches, because a chassis maker publishes frame data and a coach builder does not publish body dimensions for a unit built in a run of two hundred. The answer is symmetry. A body that was built square is square side to side, and comparing left against right produces a defensible number without any factory sheet at all.

Where symmetry is also compromised, we measure a comparable unit if one is on the property, and we say plainly in the file that the reference is comparative rather than published. Naming the limitation strengthens the document rather than weakening it. Reviewers distrust certainty that has not been earned, and in our experience they accept a clearly labeled comparative measurement with very little friction.

Appendix: questions and answers

How much frame displacement is enough to matter on a motorhome?
Less than you would guess. Six tenths of an inch at a front reference point is invisible to the eye and well outside tolerance for a structure carrying suspension mounting. Consequences show up later as alignment wear, door gap changes and headlight aim that will not hold, not on the day of the inspection.
Why does a field appraiser not measure structure on site?
Because measurement requires anchoring and a measuring system, neither of which travels in a truck, and a 40 foot coach cannot be set up in a parking lot. The visit is designed to document visible damage and set an opening figure. Measurement is a shop operation, and requesting it is a normal next step.
How is a coach measured when the builder published no dimensions?
By symmetry. A body assembled square is square left to right, so comparing opposite reference points yields a defensible figure without a factory sheet. We label the reference as comparative in the file, which reviewers accept readily. Overstating the source of a number is what invites challenge.
Does it matter whether measurements are a document or an email?
It matters a lot. A signed sheet with reference points and tolerances reads as evidence and moves through review quickly. The same numbers described in a paragraph read as a claim and generate a clarifying question, which typically costs two calendar days per round trip.
Can displacement still be proven after new parts are installed?
It gets much harder. Once a fascia, a support bracket or a light assembly has been replaced, the geometry has been disturbed and the original condition can only be inferred. Measure before anything comes off or goes on, and the file carries a baseline nobody can dispute later.
