A Released Bond Line Injected and Pressed Flat

What do sidewall delamination press photographs show?
They show whether the panel is flat under raking light, and whether the injection pattern stayed inside the sounded boundary. This fifth wheel front wall took sixteen body hours at our Yorba Linda shop, with the chalk outline recorded before a single hole was drilled.

This is the repair that most owners are told is impossible and most shops quote as a reskin. It is neither, provided two conditions hold: the release has a boundary that stops in open panel, and the core behind it is dry. Both were true on this front wall, so the bond was reset rather than the skin removed, at roughly a fifth of the hours a reskin would have taken.
Three pairs here. One is a genuine before and after under matched raking light. The other two are process pairs, published because the method is the only thing that distinguishes this repair from cosmetic filling.
Why raking light is the only honest test
A laminated panel with a released bond does not fail flat. It bulges very slightly, sometimes only a millimetre or two over a couple of feet, which is invisible under overhead light and unmistakable under light coming across the surface at a shallow angle. That is why both frames in the first pair were shot with the same lamp in the same position on the left.
In the before frame the shadow band starts under the window corner and runs diagonally down and outboard. Its softness tells you the deflection is gentle rather than a crease. In the after frame the band is gone entirely and the surface returns an even gradient. Any residual waviness would show, which is exactly why a shop confident in a press repair should be happy to shoot it this way.
The chalk plate and why the boundary comes first
Plate 2.1 is the sounding result: a chalk line drawn wherever the tap note changed from a dead thud to a drum. On this wall it enclosed an area roughly three times the size of the visible ripple, which is entirely typical and is the reason estimates written from photographs are unreliable on laminated construction.
The line also has to be checked at its edges. If the outline had reached the window return or the roof to sidewall joint, injection would have been the wrong method, because a void that vents to a seam cannot be packed under pressure. This one stopped in open panel on all sides, which is what made the whole approach viable and what the plate documents.
Battens, clamps and the mistake that makes dimples
Plate 3.1 shows timber battens laid across the outline with padded clamps drawing them against the wall. The battens exist to distribute load. A clamp applied directly to a laminated panel pulls a small area much harder than its surroundings, and resin cures around that local deflection, so the finished panel carries a shallow dimple at every clamp position.
Pressure is also applied progressively rather than all at once, working from the centre of the outline outward so excess resin has somewhere to go and air is driven toward the perimeter. Then it stays clamped through full cure, which on this job meant the wall was tied up for most of two days. That waiting time is why six shop days accompany only sixteen labor hours.
Note
Clamp positions are the tell on a press repair. Look down the panel under raking light for a regular pattern of shallow dips at even spacing, which is what point clamping without battens leaves behind.
What these plates still cannot confirm
Whether the resin fully wetted the void. A press repair can look perfect and still have a partially filled cavity, and the only way to know is that the panel remains flat through several seasons of heat cycling. We tap the repaired area again before delivery and compare the note with adjacent sound panel, which is a genuine check, and we record it. It is still not the same as three summers.
So an owner considering this repair should understand it as the correct answer for a bounded dry release rather than as a permanent guarantee of anything. If the note comes back hollow at the next service, the wall has told you it needed the skin off, and that outcome is more likely on units where the release was larger or where moisture readings were marginal.

Appendix: questions and answers
- Are the injection holes visible after refinishing?
- Not on a finished panel. Each hole is deburred, filled with a resin and filler mix, faired level and then blocked with the surrounding surface before primer. Under raking light a poorly filled hole shows as a small bright dot, so that is the thing to check on collection rather than looking for the drilled pattern.
- How long does a pressed panel stay clamped?
- Through full cure of the resin system used, which on this job was most of two days. Releasing early is the most common way a press repair fails, because the bond has green strength but not final strength and the panel pulls itself partway back toward its bulged shape. The clamps come off on the resin's schedule, not the shop's.
- How do shop presses differ from an owner injection kit?
- Mostly in the ability to draw the panel flat and hold it. A kit gives you resin and a syringe, which addresses the bond but not the shape, so the ripple often cures in place. The other difference is boundary work: a kit user rarely sounds and chalks the whole area, so the holes end up outside the void.
- Is a fifth wheel front wall more prone to this than a side wall?
- It takes different loading. The front wall faces road debris and rain at towing speed, and on many units it also carries a large window and the pin box structure beneath it. The combination of impact exposure and flex makes it a common location, and it is also where owners notice a ripple soonest because they look at it while hitching.
