Wrap Removal Before Paint on a Nine Year Old Work Van

What condition is the paint in under a vinyl wrap after several years?
Better than the exposed panels in terms of fade and often worse in terms of adhesion, corrosion and previous repairs. Vans arrive at our Yorba Linda shop from Rancho Santa Margarita fleets with wraps that were applied over primer, over fresh repairs or over stone chips that then held water.

The owner wanted the van painted rather than rewrapped, having decided that a third wrap on a nine year old vehicle was money spent on a surface rather than on the vehicle. Reasonable. He also expected the paint underneath to be in good condition because it had been covered the whole time, which is half right in a way that matters.
Vinyl is an excellent ultraviolet screen. The panels it covered were noticeably less faded than the roof and the upper hood, which had never been wrapped. Vinyl is also an excellent moisture trap and an excellent way to hide the previous nine years of bodywork from anybody looking at the vehicle. Both of those facts turned up on the same afternoon.
How the vinyl actually comes off
Heat and patience. A heat gun brings a section up to a temperature where the adhesive releases rather than tears, and the film is pulled back on itself at a shallow angle of roughly fifteen to twenty degrees rather than pulled away from the panel. Pulling at ninety degrees stretches the film, snaps it, and leaves you starting again every eight inches.
Large flat panels want two people, one heating and one pulling, working across the panel in a consistent direction. Around door handles, mirror bases and body creases the film has been stretched during application and it is more brittle there, so those areas come last and slower. On this van the film itself took about four hours and the adhesive took another two, which is a fairly typical ratio.

The adhesive, which is the longer half of the job
Film removal leaves adhesive behind in a pattern that follows the original application: heavy where the film was flat and lightly stretched, almost absent where it was under tension. It comes off with a citrus based adhesive remover, worked with a plastic scraper and clean rags, changing rags constantly because a rag loaded with adhesive simply redistributes it.
Then a solvent wipe with the product appropriate to the coating that is going on next, because adhesive remover leaves its own residue and citrus oils are the enemy of paint adhesion. Skipping that wipe is the reason a repaint over a formerly wrapped vehicle sometimes fails as fisheyes in the clear, and the failure appears in the booth rather than in the prep bay where it was caused.
The four surfaces we found
First, original factory finish in good condition, slightly less faded than the exposed panels, needing nothing more than a full sand. Most of the vehicle was this. Second, a previous body repair on the sliding door that had been refinished properly and was sound.
Third, a previous repair on the driver side rear quarter that had been primered and never topcoated, then wrapped over. Primer is porous. Nine years of a wrap over unsealed primer produced a panel that had absorbed moisture through every microscopic path available, and the vinyl came off that area bringing flakes of primer with it. Fourth, and most interesting, an area on the lower rear panel where the film had been applied directly over a repair that had not fully cured, and the film pulled that entire repair off in one sheet the size of a hand.
The ghost lines that will not polish out
This van had been wrapped twice. The first wrap's graphic cut lines were visible in the paint after the second wrap came off, as faint but perfectly straight tonal boundaries. What causes them is differential ultraviolet exposure: where the first wrap had a white panel the paint underneath saw one amount of light, and where it had a dark panel or a gap it saw another.
That is fade, not contamination, so it does not respond to compounding. A polisher removes clear and the tonal difference goes all the way through the colour coat. On a vehicle being repainted it does not matter, because the whole surface is going under new material. On a vehicle being unwrapped and kept as is, it matters a great deal, and it is the thing nobody warns a fleet about before they decide to remove a wrap and not repaint.
Note
If a wrap is coming off a vehicle that is not being repainted, expect the previous graphic layout to be faintly visible in the paint. It is differential fade and no amount of polishing removes it.
Where the wrap had been hiding corrosion
Two stone chips on the leading edge of the sliding door had been wrapped over. A chip in exposed paint dries out between rain events. A chip under vinyl does not, because the film holds moisture against the substrate and slows evaporation to almost nothing. Both chips had grown into blisters about the size of a nickel with active corrosion underneath.
Neither was visible through the vinyl and neither was structurally serious, but both needed treating properly rather than filling: strip to bare metal, treat, epoxy prime, then fill and block. That is an extra hour or so per site and it is entirely the consequence of wrapping over a chip rather than repairing it first. It is also the strongest argument we know for repairing paint damage before a wrap goes on rather than after it comes off.
What the repaint actually needed
Full sand across every panel, spot repairs at the two corrosion sites and the two failed previous repairs, epoxy primer on bare metal, high build primer and block on the repaired areas, sealer across the whole vehicle because the substrate was now four different things, then base and clear on the complete exterior.
The sealer coat is the line item that gets questioned and it is the one that made the job come out right. With original finish, sound repair paint, absorbed primer and fresh epoxy all on the same vehicle, a single sealer coat gives the basecoat one uniform substrate to sit on. Without it, the colour reads differently over each of those four surfaces in a way that only becomes visible after the clear goes on, at which point the fix is doing it again.

- What is the correct way to pull a vinyl wrap off a panel?
- Heated to the point where the adhesive releases, then pulled back on itself at roughly fifteen to twenty degrees. Pulling away from the panel at a steep angle stretches and snaps the film every few inches. Large flat panels go faster with two people, one heating ahead of the other pulling.
- Why does adhesive remover need a solvent wipe afterwards?
- Because citrus based removers leave their own oily residue, and those oils prevent paint adhesion. The failure shows up as fisheyes in the clear during spraying rather than in the prep bay where it was caused. A wipe with the solvent appropriate to the coming coating is not optional.
- Can old graphic outlines be polished out after a wrap is removed?
- No. Those lines are differential ultraviolet fade, meaning the colour itself changed by different amounts under light and dark sections of the previous wrap. The difference goes through the colour coat, so removing clear with a polisher does nothing. Only refinishing eliminates them.
- What does wrapping over a stone chip do?
- It traps moisture against the exposed substrate and slows evaporation almost to nothing, so a chip that would dry between rain events instead stays wet. Both chips on one van had grown into blisters with active corrosion underneath, invisible through the film until it came off.
- Why does a formerly wrapped vehicle need a sealer coat?
- Because the substrate is no longer one material. Original finish, sound repair paint, absorbed primer and fresh epoxy all reflect and absorb differently, so basecoat over them reads as different shades once cleared. A sealer gives the colour one uniform surface, and skipping it means spraying the vehicle twice.
