Getting a Disabled Coach Into a Repair Bay

How do you move an RV that will not start to a repair shop?

The phone call usually opens with the wrong question, which is how much a tow costs. The number depends almost entirely on facts the caller has not established yet, and establishing them takes about ten minutes with a flashlight. A coach that can roll on its own wheels behind a wrecker is one price. A coach with locked brakes and a driveline that must not turn is a different operation with a different truck.
We do not offer roadside service, so every unit that cannot drive itself arrives here on equipment somebody else dispatched. That means the quality of the information you give the transport company determines whether one truck shows up or two. Here is what to find out, in the order a dispatcher will ask for it.
Why the wheels are locked on a coach that will not start
Air braked coaches use spring brakes for parking. A powerful spring inside the actuator applies the brake, and air pressure is what holds that spring compressed and the brake released. Lose the engine and the compressor stops. Lose air pressure over the following hours or days and the springs apply themselves. The coach is then parked whether you want it to be or not.
This surprises owners because it is the opposite of a car. A vehicle with hydraulic brakes and a dead battery still rolls. A coach with air brakes and no pressure has the parking brake mechanically applied at every axle it serves, and no amount of releasing the dash valve changes that. The wheels will not turn and dragging them destroys the shoes and the drums.
Caging, jumper air and what a transport operator does about it
There are two ways forward and both belong to the transport operator rather than to the owner. The first is to supply air, either from the tow vehicle's system through a glad hand connection or from a portable supply, which releases the spring brakes normally and lets the coach roll. The second is to cage the springs mechanically, using the release bolt built into each spring brake actuator, which compresses the spring by hand and frees the wheel.
Caging is straightforward for somebody who does it regularly and hazardous for somebody who does not. The spring inside those actuators stores a great deal of energy and the housing is not something to open. What matters from the owner's side is telling the dispatcher that the coach is air braked and has been sitting without pressure, because that one sentence determines which truck and which operator gets sent.

What can roll on its own wheels and what cannot
A coach with an automatic transmission generally must not be towed with its drive wheels on the ground. The transmission's internal lubrication depends on the input side turning, and a driveline spun from the output end for fifty miles runs dry. The manufacturer's documentation for the specific chassis is the authority here, and on most diesel pusher chassis the answer is either a driveline disconnect or all wheels off the ground.
That single fact decides the equipment. Drive wheels off the ground means a wrecker with a lift on the drive axle and the steer axle rolling, or a full deck. On a tag axle coach the tag has to be considered separately. This is why the dispatcher asks about chassis make and axle configuration before quoting anything, and why a caller who knows those two answers gets a useful number on the first call.
Choosing between a wrecker and a deck
A heavy wrecker with a wheel lift handles a coach whose brakes have been released and whose driveline can be managed, and it is the more common choice for a unit that is otherwise intact. It is also the practical choice in a tight storage lot, because a wrecker can position where a lowboy cannot get turned around.
A lowboy or a heavy deck is the answer when the coach cannot roll at all, when there is impact damage that makes the suspension or steering unreliable, or when the drive axle is the damaged component. It needs room to load, a reasonably level surface and an approach that does not require reversing the length of a lot. Sorting the loading position before dispatch prevents the second invoice that a dry run generates.
Note
Air suspension that has bled down changes both ride height and the angle the coach presents at a loading ramp. Tell the transport operator whether the coach is sitting on its bump stops, because it affects the equipment they bring.
What the shop needs before it arrives
We need length, height and whether it rolls. Length determines where it stages on the property. Height determines which door it goes through, and our bay doors are 16 feet, which clears a coach carrying rooftop equipment without drama. Whether it rolls determines whether we can move it once the transport leaves, which matters because a unit that cannot be repositioned occupies whatever square footage it lands on until the repair is finished.
Also tell us what is wrong beyond not starting. A coach with a fuel system problem, a coach with a locked engine and a coach with collision damage to the front structure are three different arrival plans. On the last of those we want to measure before anything is disturbed, which is easier if nobody has already jacked, chained or dragged the front end.
- Overall length and overall height including rooftop equipment
- Chassis make and axle configuration, including a tag if fitted
- Whether air pressure is present and whether the wheels turn
- Whether the air suspension has bled down onto its stops
- Gate hours and the loading position at the origin
- Any collision damage that should be measured before disturbance
The paperwork to create before it moves
Photograph the coach where it sits, all four corners plus any damage, before the truck arrives. Photograph it again loaded. Write the claim number on the transport ticket yourself if a claim is involved, and keep a photograph of both sides of that ticket. Those four steps take five minutes and they close off the most common documentation gap on transported units.
If the coach is being moved out of a storage facility, confirm gate hours and tell the lot manager a heavy truck is coming. A driver who arrives at a locked gate bills for the trip regardless, and a second dispatch for the same move is the invoice a claim reviewer will question hardest.
Appendix: questions and answers
- Why will a coach with a dead engine not roll at all?
- Because air braked coaches park on spring brakes. A spring inside each actuator applies the brake and air pressure is what holds it released. Once pressure bleeds away the brakes apply themselves mechanically, and no dash control will release them. The wheels will not turn until air is supplied or the springs are caged.
- Should an owner attempt to cage the spring brakes?
- No. The springs store substantial energy and the actuator housing is not something to open. Supplying air or caging the springs with the built in release bolt is work for the transport operator who does it regularly. The owner's job is to tell the dispatcher the coach is air braked and has lost pressure.
- Can a motorhome with an automatic transmission be flat towed?
- Generally not with the drive wheels on the ground. Internal transmission lubrication depends on the input side turning, so a driveline spun from the output end runs dry. - When is a deck truck needed instead of a heavy wrecker?
- When the coach cannot roll at all, when impact damage makes the steering or suspension unreliable, or when the drive axle itself is damaged. A wrecker is often better in a tight storage lot because it can position where a long deck cannot turn around, so the origin layout matters as much as the fault.
- Why should a damaged front end not be jacked or chained before arrival?
- Because structural measurement is most defensible when the geometry has not been disturbed. Once a front structure has been lifted, chained or dragged, the original displacement can only be inferred. Telling the transport operator that measurement is planned changes how they rig the pick up.
