A Chalked Gelcoat Wall That Came Back Without Paint

Can oxidized RV gelcoat be restored rather than repainted?

The owner had two quotes for a full repaint and a suspicion that his trailer did not need one. He was mostly right. Three of the four large exterior surfaces had enough gelcoat left to cut and polish back to a deep even colour, and one did not, and the difference between them was entirely about which way each surface had faced for fifteen years.
Restoration and repainting are not competing sales pitches. They are two answers to a question about how much material is left, and that question has a physical answer that takes about a minute to obtain. Here is the test, the process, and how a mixed approach gets matched so it does not look like two jobs.
What chalking actually is
Gelcoat is a pigmented resin surface applied in the mould, and on an RV sidewall it is meaningfully thicker than a paint film. Ultraviolet light breaks down the resin at the surface, releasing the pigment particles as a fine powder. That powder is the chalk, and it is the reason a dark red coach turns pink and leaves colour on your hand.
The important consequence is that chalking is a surface phenomenon working inward. Below the degraded layer the gelcoat is intact and still pigmented. Restoration means removing the degraded layer and exposing sound material underneath, which is a subtractive process with a hard limit: there is only so much gelcoat, and once it is gone the next layer is the laminate, which cannot be polished into anything.
The wet test, which takes a minute
Wash a section, then wet it thoroughly with plain water and look at it while it is wet. Water fills the microscopic roughness of the degraded surface and temporarily gives you the optical result that polishing would give you permanently. If the colour comes back deep and even across the whole wet area, there is pigmented gelcoat there to work with.
If it stays grey, or comes back in patches with pale zones between, you are looking at areas where the pigmented layer is gone or nearly gone. Those patches do not improve with polishing, they get worse, because cutting removes what little remains. Compare against a hidden reference: the inside face of a compartment door or the panel behind a wheel skirt has the original colour and it costs nothing to look.

What the test found on this trailer
The driver side, the curb side and the rear all wetted out to a deep even colour. The front cap did not. It came back mottled, with pale zones roughly the size of a hand across the upper third and around the marker light bosses, which is exactly where you would expect it. A front cap faces forward and upward in transit and it takes both direct sun and abrasive airflow.
The two side walls also differed from each other in how much cutting they needed. The curb side had spent fifteen years facing whichever way the trailer was parked, which in a storage lot is consistent, and it was noticeably less degraded than the driver side. That meant different abrasive sequences on the two sides, not one process applied uniformly.
The process on the three surfaces that passed
Wash and decontaminate first, because dragging embedded grit around under a pad puts scratches into the surface you are trying to save. Then wet sanding, starting at whatever grade the degradation demands and stepping up through progressively finer grades. On the driver side that meant starting coarser than we would like and taking four steps. On the curb side, two.
Then compounding with a wool pad, which is what actually removes the sanding scratch pattern, followed by polishing with foam to refine the finish. Then a protective coating, because bare polished gelcoat with no protection begins oxidising again from the day it leaves. Roughly forty detail hours across the three surfaces at the detail rate, which is a fraction of what refinishing the same area would cost in body and paint hours.
Before you proceed
Do not start with a coarse abrasive because the surface looks bad. Start with the finest grade that will do the work and step down only if it will not. Gelcoat you remove does not come back.
Matching paint to a restored surface
The front cap was painted, and the interesting part is what it was matched to. Not the factory colour code, because the restored gelcoat beside it is fifteen years old and has lost some pigment even where it polished up well. Matching to the code would have produced a visibly newer cap against three older walls.
So the target was the restored surface itself. A spectrophotometer reading was taken on the polished driver side panel adjacent to the cap seam, the formula was adjusted from there, and spray out cards were checked against the actual wall in daylight before anything was mixed in quantity. The cap was then refinished with a blend into the first few inches of the side walls, which hides the transition where the two treatments meet.
When we tell owners to paint instead
Three situations. When the wet test shows patchy grey across a large proportion of the surface, because there is nothing left to cut into. When the unit has previous spot repairs in the area, since a repair panel is paint over filler and will not respond like gelcoat. And when the owner wants a different colour, which is a decision restoration cannot serve at all.
The fourth case is a judgment call rather than a rule. A unit with heavy crazing across a surface can sometimes be polished, and the crazing will still be there afterward because it is in the gelcoat rather than on it. Polishing a crazed panel produces a glossy crazed panel. Owners are frequently surprised by that and it is far better said before the work than after it.

Owners are often surprised by that outcome, which is why it belongs in the conversation before the work rather than at delivery. Crazing across a large area usually points toward refinishing.
