# Class C Motorhome Repair for Rancho Santa Margarita Families

A Class C is the only motorhome that keeps its original van cab. The doors, dash, windshield and A pillars all came from Ford or Chevrolet, and the coach builder cut the roof off behind the cab, then framed a house that reaches forward over it to create the overhead bunk. Everything unusual about repairing one of these traces back to that overhang.

The bunk is a cantilever. It is supported at the rear, unsupported at the front, and it is bolted to a cab that moves independently on rubber body mounts. The two parts never agree, and the seam between them carries the whole argument.

## The cabover explains almost every Class C repair

Take the overhang away and a Class C is a plain box on a cutaway frame with very few surprises. Add it back and you have a platform that reaches four to five feet forward of its own support, sits above a windshield that flexes with the cab, and carries a roof membrane that has to stop in a line right across the top of that glass. Three separate problems live in the same two square feet.

That is why we start every Class C inspection at the bunk rather than at the reported symptom. An owner reports a stain on a cabinet or a mushy spot at the foot of the bunk mattress. What we are actually looking for is where the water crossed the trim strip, how far it has travelled along the lauan grain, and whether the header above the windshield is still holding a fastener.

## Stick built walls behave nothing like a bonded sidewall

Most Class C lines are stick built. The exterior is a filon sheet glued to individual aluminum studs with insulation batted between them. There is no continuous core carrying the skin, so the bond only exists where a stud passes behind. When it releases, you see a long straight bubble that maps the framing, which is a completely different repair from the rounded delamination blister a laminated coach produces.

The practical difference is that a stick built wall can often be re-bonded and refinished in place rather than cut out and replaced, because we are re-establishing adhesion to a stud rather than restoring a foam core. We probe the wall with a moisture meter through the interior panel first, since a wet stud bay will reject any adhesive we put in front of it.

## You own a Ford and a house, and they get repaired differently

The cab, doors, windshield, dash and everything forward of the cut line are Ford or Chevrolet parts, ordered against a VIN and available through normal channels. Everything behind and above is coach builder specific and often obsolete on a unit past ten seasons. A single fender bender that creases a cab door and cracks the house corner produces a two source parts list with two very different lead times.

We write those as separate sections on the estimate. It keeps the adjuster from bouncing the whole file while one obsolete house panel is chased, and it lets us start the Ford side of the work while the coach builder side is still being sourced.

## Small slides, small compartments, tight access

A Class C usually carries one slide, often just the dinette, driven by a Schwintek pair buried in the walls of the room. There is no rack under the floor to inspect and no gear pack to reach from a bay, which means diagnosis happens through the room walls and the fault is normally a sync problem rather than a dead motor. We measure the opening diagonals before assuming anything electrical.

The house systems are packed into whatever space was left over. On a 28 footer the water heater, furnace and converter frequently share one exterior compartment with no service clearance, so a $150 written estimate on a furnace job includes the time to establish whether the appliance can even be withdrawn without pulling cabinetry.

## What a Class C job costs here

Body, structural and interior work bills at $210 per hour with body supplies at $5 per body hour and paint supplies at $55 per paint hour. Slide mechanisms, appliances and house electrical move to the mechanical department at $260 per hour, and diagnostics with a scan tool run $285 per hour with a one hour minimum.

The single biggest variable on these coaches is how far cabover rot has travelled. A reseal on sound decking is a short job. The same trim line on a coach that has been leaking for four seasons takes the front of the roof, the bunk platform and often the windshield header, and the estimate has to be written after the probe, not before it.

## Who brings us Class C coaches, and what gets paid

These are family coaches and rental coaches. Families arrive with slow damage: a stain that grew over three summers, a bunk floor that finally gave. Rental operators arrive with fast damage: a clipped cabover corner from a low canopy, because the bunk is the highest and least visible part of the vehicle from the driver seat.

That split matters for the claim. The canopy strike is a covered collision with a clean origin point. The stain is not covered anywhere in California, and we say so at the first call rather than letting an owner spend a deductible finding out. ## Questions and answers

### Where does the water in my Class C cabover actually come from?

The trim strip that terminates the roof membrane straight across the top of the windshield. Park nose down on a driveway and that line becomes the low point of the roof, so water sits on the fastener row instead of running off. It weeps for seasons before a stain reaches the inside of the bunk.

### The front of my overhead bunk feels soft. How bad is that?

Worse than it feels. The bunk platform is a lauan sandwich cantilevered forward with no support at the leading edge, so softness there means water has already wicked the full depth of the panel. We probe from above and below before quoting, because the same symptom covers a small patch and a full platform rebuild.

### Why is the bubble in my sidewall a straight vertical line?

Because your coach is stick built. The filon skin is glued to individual aluminum studs rather than to a continuous foam core, so when the bond releases it lets go between two studs and the bubble maps the framing. A laminated coach fails as a rounded blister instead. The repair paths are different.

### What cracks the seam between the van cab and the coach body?

Movement. The cab rides on rubber body mounts and twists with the frame, while the house behind it is a rigid box. Coach builders bridge the gap with a filler panel and sealant instead of structure, so the joint opens on one side and closes on the other every time the coach crosses uneven ground.

### Why does one small Class C repair need parts from two companies?

Because you own two vehicles joined together. The cab, doors, glass and dash are Ford or Chevrolet parts against your VIN. Everything above and behind the cut line belongs to the coach builder and may be discontinued. We separate them on the estimate so one obsolete house panel does not stall the whole job.

### My dinette slide binds just before it closes. Is the motor failing?

Usually not. Small Class C rooms run a Schwintek pair with a motor in each side wall, and they only work if both tracks stay square. As the aluminum framing around the opening ages it racks slightly, one track tightens, and the motors fall out of sync at the end of travel. We measure the diagonals first.
