A motorhome arrives with one registration and two manufacturers. Ford, Freightliner, Spartan, International or Prevost built the part that moves. Winnebago, Tiffin, Newmar, Thor or a one man conversion shop built the part you live in. The paperwork treats the result as a single vehicle. Physics does not, and that disagreement is where most of the repair work on this page comes from.

## Why a motorhome is two vehicles

The chassis and the house are engineered against opposite goals. A truck rail is designed to twist, because a rail that cannot twist eventually snaps. A vacuum bonded sidewall is designed to be stiff, because stiffness is what keeps a bonded skin attached to its core. Bolt the second onto the first and you have a permanent argument running down the middle of your coach. Every fastener line, cap radius and roof seam is carrying a load that appears on nobody's drawing, and that is the honest explanation for most of what owners eventually describe as a factory defect.

It also explains why identical damage costs different money on different coaches. A welded raised rail under a diesel pusher passes far less twist into the body than a bolted F53 does, so pushers do not crack at the windshield. They fail at the finish instead, because they wear a painted graphics package across forty three feet of flank with no door line to hide a blend in. Same class, same storage lot, entirely different repair order.

## Which motorhome do you actually have

Owners are usually certain about the letter and unsure about everything else. That is fine, because the letter is the least useful part of the answer. What decides the repair is the rail under the floor, how much body hangs behind the drive axle, and whether the top is a membrane or a molded shell. The table sorts all twelve unit types on exactly those terms.

Two rows get mixed up more than the rest. A Class C sits on a Ford E-450 or Chevrolet 4500 cutaway with a van nose and hydraulic brakes, with a bunk cantilevered over that cab. A Super C uses a Freightliner M2 106 or International MV medium duty chassis, a conventional hood and air brakes, and weighs roughly twice as much. From thirty feet away the bunk looks the same. Nothing underneath it is.

## Three structures wearing the same badge

Bolted C channel sits under a gas Class A and under most Class C units. Two rails, crossmembers, bolts, and an engine ahead of the front axle. It is inexpensive to build, straightforward to service, and it moves. Driveway aprons, the dip at a storage lot gate and the transitions off Santa Margarita Parkway all put a twist through it, and the molded cap at the nose is the part that ends up relieving that twist.

Welded raised rail from Freightliner or Spartan carries the pushers and the luxury coaches. Air bags, air brakes, the engine behind the drive axle and a frame built to resist twist rather than absorb it. These coaches hide their problems well. They stay quiet until a basement bay door stops latching or a slide seal starts passing daylight, and by then the cause has usually been developing for two seasons underneath.

Then there are the shells. A Prevost H3-45 or an MCI is a stainless steel monocoque: the body sides are the structure, so cutting a slide opening into one is engineering work rather than carpentry, and a hard hit is measured before anything is straightened. A skoolie is the reverse case, a school bus body riveted to a conventional truck frame, where a raised roof introduces a horizontal seam the factory never drew.

## Where a coach lets water in first

Nearly every water job we open started at one of four places, and the middle of the roof is not one of them. First is the front cap to roof lap seam, where a rigid molded part and a flexible membrane share one screwed and sealed joint that expands at two different rates in Orange County heat. Second is the window flange, where butyl tape shrinks and water begins tracking down inside the laminate instead of running out of it.

Third is the penetration set on top: air conditioner gaskets, Fan-Tastic and MaxxAir vent flanges, the refrigerator vent and the antenna base. Fourth is the slide opening itself, where a room running out of square by a quarter inch loads a wiper seal diagonally and lets water in along one edge. We probe decking from above and from inside the overhead cabinets before quoting any of it, because soft lauan turns a seam repair into a decking repair and roughly triples the hours.

> **warning:** A brown ring in the overhead bunk cabinet is a decking finding, not a cosmetic one. Plan on the membrane coming off rather than being patched.

## What the recurring motorhome jobs run

Coach body and structural work bills at $210 per hour. House systems, slide drives, generators and electrical move to the mechanical department at $260 per hour, and anything requiring module scanning or programming runs at $285 per hour with a one hour minimum. Materials are separate: $55 in paint supplies per paint hour and $5 in body supplies per body hour, with sales tax applied to parts and materials rather than to labor.

The ranges below are wide on purpose. A front cap crack that stopped at the radius and one that has run into the windshield channel carry the same job name and are a factor of eight apart in hours. We write scope from measurements, not from a catalog. A written estimate is $150 and is credited in full against an authorized repair, and anything past $2,000 takes a fifty percent deposit at authorization.

## Length, height and the run up the 241

The measurement that decides whether a coach fits is taken over the air conditioner shrouds, not off a brochure. A 45 foot tag axle pusher at thirteen feet four clears our sixteen foot bay doors and enters the sixty foot downdraft booth whole, which is the only way a full body finish comes back without a visible band through the middle of the flank. Weight is not a limit, because structural work on a coach this size is done at floor level rather than on a lift.

From Rancho Santa Margarita the sensible approach is the 241 north to the 91 west, off at Weir Canyon. It costs a few extra minutes and it keeps a long wheelbase coach out of the tight surface turns through Anaheim Hills, where rear overhang finds curbs and planter walls. Owners who take the surface route are the ones who arrive with a fresh scrape on the rear cap and a second line on the estimate.

## What a carrier pays for on a self propelled unit

Two findings get denied on coaches more consistently than anything else: long term roof seepage and gelcoat crazing. Coach claims also split into chassis lines and house lines, and an estimate that blends the two gets passed between two adjusters instead of approved.

## Everything on this page happens on our floor

All coach work is performed at the 35,000 square foot facility on La Palma Avenue in Yorba Linda. We do not operate a mobile service of any kind, and there is no roadside option on a unit this size. The reasons are physical rather than commercial: a frame rack is bolted to a slab, a downdraft booth needs filtered air movement, and a slide room cannot come out onto stands in a gravel lot without loading the sidewall in a direction it was never built to take.

That constraint is also why we ask for photographs before you drive up. A coach that arrives unannounced can sit while a bay opens, and storage on a 40 footer is not a small line. ### How do I tell a Class C from a Super C?

Whether the tow is payable depends on your policy, and we help you establish that first.

### Which motorhome type takes the longest in the building?

A full repaint on a 40 to 45 foot pusher, at three to five weeks, because the booth is committed for most of that time. Structural work on a bus conversion after a hard hit can run longer still, since a monocoque shell has to be measured and rebuilt before any finish work is scheduled at all.

### My coach has been repainted once already. Does that change anything?

Yes, and it changes the color work more than the body work. A repaint over the original finish means two film builds, two possible clear systems and an unknown mixing history. We read the panel with a spectrophotometer at three points and spray let down cards, because the code on the door jamb no longer describes what is actually on the wall.

### Who repairs the chassis while you repair the house?

A chassis specialist handles it. Our scope is the house: body, structure, both caps, the roof, the interior and the RV systems. Engine, transmission, brake and air suspension service goes to a truck shop. The estimate separates the two scopes by line so an adjuster can see exactly where one ends and the other begins.
