Every other vehicle in this family gets loaded and unloaded. A tool truck does not. The inventory goes in when the franchise starts and it stays there, three to six thousand pounds of hand tools, sockets and toolboxes sitting in the same shelving, in the same place, all day, every day, for a decade. That is a static load and static loads are what find the limits of a body.

It also means these trucks arrive with problems that look nothing like collision damage. A sill that has quietly sagged between cross members. A shelving anchor line that has torn along the sill angle. A rear step that flexes. None of it happened on a particular day, which is exactly why nobody caught it early.

## A tool truck is never unloaded

The defining fact about these vehicles is not what they carry, it is that they never stop carrying it. Three to six thousand pounds of hand tools, sockets, boxes and diagnostic gear goes into the shelving when the franchise starts, and apart from what sells and gets replaced, it stays exactly where it is for years. There is no daily unload to give the structure a rest.

Sheet metal under sustained load does something different from sheet metal under a cycling load. It creeps. Slowly, permanently, and without any single event to blame. That is why almost every structural problem on a tool truck has to be found by measurement rather than reported by the driver, who has been watching it happen too gradually to notice.

## Sills and cross members under a permanent load

Shelving transfers most of its weight to the sill angle at the outer edge of the floor, and that angle is properly supported only where a cross member reaches it. Between members it is a short beam holding several hundred pounds continuously. Given ten years, it takes a set.

What you see from outside is a very slight scalloping along the lower body line, deepest between members and least at each one. It is easy to miss and impossible to unsee once somebody points it out. We string a line along the sill and measure to it at each bay, which gives a numerical picture of how far the creep has gone before any decision about repair scope.

## Shelving anchors at the sill angle

Each shelving upright bolts through the sill angle at its base, and that bolt is holding the bottom of a fully loaded stack against side loading every time the truck turns. The angle is thin and the hole sits close to its edge, which sets up the classic failure: a tear running from the bolt hole out to the free edge rather than a fastener working loose.

It is also progressive in a specific way. When one upright tears, the shelves it was restraining hand their load to the neighbours, so the next tear comes faster. We reinforce with a continuous strip along the angle that moves the bolt line away from the edge, and we replace whatever section of angle has already torn.

## The rear step and forty cycles a day

A tool dealer working a route is in and out of the truck at every shop, and the step is taking an impact rather than a gentle transfer of weight each time. Forty or more cycles a day, five days a week, is a duty nobody specified when the assembly was drawn.

The treads dish first, then the stringer welds crack where the treads join, then the whole assembly loosens where it bolts through into the rear cross member. Rebuilding it properly means new treads on a stronger stringer and a mounting that spreads into two members, and it is one of the few jobs on these trucks where a repair genuinely outlasts the original.

> **note:** If the rear step moves underfoot, look at the cross member it bolts to before ordering step parts. A loose step usually means the mounting has started working the floor.

## A roll up door on a body that has settled

A door that has become progressively harder to close over two or three years is telling you about the body rather than the door. Sill creep is not a local phenomenon: as both sills take a set, the rear of the body settles a few millimetres relative to the front, the rear frame rotates slightly, and the tracks go out of parallel.

That history matters. A door that jammed suddenly after backing into something is a different diagnosis with a different repair. We ask how long it has been getting worse, then measure the aperture and both tracks, and correct the frame before any door hardware is ordered.

## Lower panels, wraps and driveway aprons

Twenty shop visits a day means twenty driveway aprons, service roads and parking lot lips. A long wheelbase step van with a low rear overhang catches on transitions a pickup crosses without noticing, and the contact lands on the lower panels and the rear underside.

Because the truck wears a full brand wrap, that damage is visible from across a shop parking lot and it reflects on the franchise rather than on the vehicle. We repair the panel and then choose a blend boundary at a natural break in the wrap graphics rather than at the edge of the damage, and we keep the color reading on file for the next apron.
